Following on from our previous thread.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

that's one thing I don't have to worry about with dd - she's a really good cook!

Can't you teach him how to cook icanbe?

DD has a few friends in catered halls but says they usually eat pot noodles or porridge in their rooms

Well what a waste of a costly maintenance loan- to not eat the food that’s paid for and instead buy your own pot noodle As we are only topping up the accommodation costs, DD would be stupid to do that- it is her that will be paying it back after all!

DD didn't get catered. But she can buy a meals in advance deal for £330 for the term if she wants 5 x weekday meals for ten weeks.

She could cater for herself cheaper, but it would be one less thing for her to think about, certainly for the first term while she's settling in, and she'll no doubt eat a wider variety of foods if she has the deal so I think it might be a good idea.

Interestingly, there's a page on the York website where people are posting their 'wants' for a different type of room to the one they were allocated if they were allocated to a building other than the one they wanted - and lots of wants for people wanting en suite self catered who were given shared bathroom catered.

A friend had a DS in catered at Nottingham. He's a bit of a gym/rugby type & usually had to make himself something late evening as dinner was early. And of course getting up for breakfast is a bit of an issue!

Catered is good for my DD’s first year. She can cook well but won’t be bothered and eat rubbish. At least I’ll know different meals will be available and the odd vegetable might be digested

@Sinn you are correct, University's do have to stand by their offers. This was confirmed by my DS Exam Officer on Thursday after my son had a right carry on with UCAS.

DD wanted self-catered. And tbh she has a very small appetite and probably won't have much for breakfast, and may well prefer to miss lunch rather than walk back to hall, so I think she'd do better to be self catered, plus it will be much better value for money. She also can cook reasonably well.
However I do need to persuade her that taking a hot dish out of the oven is something she needs to do on her own rather than calling for help because it's too hot.

We have told DD we will pay shortfall in maintenance loan- about £1800 , travel, phone and books etc. She will pay for her social life.

@TapasForTwo yes I keep suggesting he learns to cook more things. He works 5 days a week and arrives home at dinner time. There are weekends but he avoids me when I'm cooking. It'll be his own fault he's not learnt more. He's ok at cooking cakes though, he used to cook cakes when younger. 😀

This might be a really daft question and more obvious than I care to think but I have an excuse - a cracking headache! so here goes - books! Are we meant to buy any? Uni haven’t told us anything about this.
What about stationery? Exercise books? Pens? Rulers?

Do they still use these things or is it all entirely online?

DD has got catered... plus shared bathroom at Vanbrugh college York.

I don't think it would be her first choice but it's what she's got and I hope she makes the best of it!
There are still kitchens to use so it won't be too bad...

Two of them get the full grant so are only actually borrowing £1000 a year back so DD says they aren't really feeling like they are paying for the catering. Still I'd rather have a free proper meal than a pot noodle!!

DD is ok at cooking although incredibly unwilling to cook for the family she does know the basics. Another friend of hers in SC accommodation has a Friday dinner where they take it in turns to cook for each other. I think DD likes the idea of this.

Shimy it probably depends on the course. DD did, DS1 didn't (or buys his own, I have no idea!). I have stocked up on a few files/pads of paper etc to get DS2 started.

Must I might just follow your lead and just buy a few random bits like folders, etc. I’m surprised we haven’t got a list of text books, perhaps that’s all old fashioned.

shimy, I was browsing the module guide for dd's (sad I know) & all their materials & books are online so they don't need a physical copy. They need to buy a calculator, lab coat & goggles & suitable clothes for the boat!

Lab coats are often provided, so check before buying. DD bought 2 books during her course.

Benji not if she's self catering, but that was my worry if she was catered.
She has the same strange hunger pattern as I do I. That the less I eat, the less hungry I get.
If she's self catering she'll have breakfast in her own time and take a pack lunch if she doesn't fancy coming back. If she was catered she wouldn't get anything else as it would waste money and would just not eat.
