Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

I was prematurely complacent on how well the process was going. DS only picked one university and got an unconditional. He had accepted and paid deposit. Picked up results Thursday and went for a congratulations meal. Then Thursday night he comes down telling me he made a huge mistake the salaries are not worth the cost of the degree. So spent Friday doing what most people spends weeks contemplating. He now has a place at York, just need to sort out accommodation and get back in touch with student finance. The stress levels have been through the roof.

Shimy · 17/08/2019 12:59

That’s interesting Property wonder if he was reading the same article in the Telegraph I was reading. What was the old course and what has he changed it too?

GaraMedouar · 17/08/2019 13:13

MrKlaw - my DS is also going to Bath. It said we have to wait until possibly 10 Sep to hear about accommodation. Nothing received as yet I don’t think but I struggle to get 2 words out of my DS.

Sinn · 17/08/2019 13:13

I've heard of universities strongly suggesting a foundation degree after bad results for an unconditional offer

I thought they had to stand by their offer though.

Decorhate · 17/08/2019 13:25

@MrKlaw Bath accommodation is 6-7 k per year. Not sure how a student could earn that in the holidays holidays? You may not get any choice about what sort of halls your ds gets as he is going through Clearing.

@GaraMedouar Ds is also going to Bath, he got his accommodation email yesterday. You don’t pay a deposit but have to provide bank details for a direct debit. My ds is terrible at checking his emails so it’s always a good idea to remind them!

puppypower1 · 17/08/2019 13:26

MrKlaw and GaraMedouar - I have a DS at Bath. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try and help.

justasking111 · 17/08/2019 13:33

Finally collared DS last night post cinema trip with friends about shopping for uni. stuff. Walking on eggshells here again. He has agreed finally we need to start stocking up on stuff.

Never had this before 1st DS did Camp America for 6 weeks so had half left home, 2nd DS was up the road at Bangor, this DS is having a silent melt down I suspect about leaving home.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/08/2019 13:33

York deposit is £200 which then becomes the damage deposit which should be returned at the end of the year.

Decorhate · 17/08/2019 13:39

@puppypower1What subject is your ds doing? I have a few questions but they are subject-specific

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 13:56

mrklaw i am super confused by your comment about your ds paying you back for accommodation at Bath. You do know some of the accommodation is 7,500 pa?

MrKlaw · 17/08/2019 13:59

@Browniebronze we hope so - haven’t done the sums though. Any contribution will be taken - he’s done sod all this summer so need to get him into the work habit..

He is a youngster in the class (still not 18 until next week)

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 14:00

I suggest you do some sums rather quickly.

MrKlaw · 17/08/2019 14:02

What’s an average student earn in the summer (minus their spending money)?

Tbh it’s more a motivation for him to work. We can afford to pay (although the overlap year with DD coming in a few years will hurt), and like mentioned we’d squirrel it away for him anyway

justasking111 · 17/08/2019 14:02

Our DS Brownie would have to work 1200 hours in the summer holidays to pay us back. That is 120 hours per week, I am also perplexed.

ZandathePanda · 17/08/2019 14:02

Brownie £7500?!? Bloomin eck.
Is that with butler-service?

MrKlaw · 17/08/2019 14:03

@GaraMedouar my son mentioned August 21 would be the earliest they’d hear about accommodation. Just want an idea so we can start planning what’s needed. Hopefully there will be self catering available as he’s pretty good with food and I think that could help him with others to be less isolated too

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 14:04

It includes partly catered. You have no choice in what type of accommodation that you get.

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 14:06

Ds has worked since finishing his exams in June and has saved 1.5k. He's been to 2 festivals and bought a bit of sports kit and been out quite a lot.

justasking111 · 17/08/2019 14:07

DS has done two years in a restaurant pub on a marina. The manager thinks he will be able to get a job in Leeds and wants to write him a super duper reference. He is serving cocktails now and can give you the ingredients to lots of them. Wonder if he can do the Tom Cruise style movements. We ought to get him the film Grin

justasking111 · 17/08/2019 14:11

Brownie. DS should have 2k saved by the time he gets to uni. wonder how long it will last. He will have his job back every time he comes home but xmas is a short break so not as much money.

He has accepted that he will get a weekly allowance paid into his account on a Monday for food etc. as his bros. had. in the hope that he does not splurge on his social life and if he does at least he can do a food shop after a hedonistic weekend Grin

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 14:12

Thats exactly what ds has asked for! Money on a monday definitely not a Friday!

Laniakea · 17/08/2019 14:15

dd has worked all this summer and has earned about £1000. That's lots of hours, pay is crap for under 21s and getting non zero hour stuff is nigh on impossible.

Thanks for the sympathy, it's pretty crap & complicates everything - they are going to Reading festival together next weekend. They also had plans for her birthday in November which she's cancelled, none of her other friends will be around so it feels pretty miserable. So I've booked a week at centre parcs to coincide with it - hardly glamorous but hopefully it will cheer her up a bit (ds1 can't cope with planes etc so that's as exciting as we get!).

She was diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma in year 12 - it's benign & she seemed quite sanguine about it - & now it turns out she's been worrying about it, been having episodes of blurred vision (probably computer/not wearing glasses related) and fretting. I've booked her an optician appointment on Tuesday & she's emailed her consultant.

Just horrible all around.

Browniebronze · 17/08/2019 14:17

lanikea much sympathy and Wine for you and your dd

justasking111 · 17/08/2019 14:23

Re blurred vision yes optician, Boots were wonderful with me provided glasses with particular attention to the hours I spend on line.

Laniakea · 17/08/2019 14:24

we'll be doing weekly money on a Monday too Grin

We're looking at loan of 4,168 (all she's eligible for) to pay rent which is hopefully no more than 5200 (cheapest this year was 4500 & that's what she wants!). She'll make up the rent short fall from her savings which will be replenished by holiday work.

We'll then give her £50 a week plus pay for her phone & gym membership ... that takes it up to a little below maximum loan level for outside London students. If she needs more it will have to come from either work or savings.
