Re Edexcel, DS is fairly certain that the leak was far more widespread than they said. How would they know how far it had spread by WhatsApp groups? It came through to one of his friends phones during the exam so was there when they finished.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/08/2019 15:36

@Decorhate I'm with you on not having a clue. When DS didn't do as well in his GCSEs as he should have done, I did have a sense of doom that this might well be the case ahead of Results Day.

With A Levels much less so, although given that DS worked much harder, got really good reports throughout, high predicted grades and internal exam results and was generally much higher placed amongst his school cohort for the subjects he took (none of which could be applied to Yrs 10 & 11!), I would think him more likely to get near his predicted grades, but who knows? He needs AAB.

Re the EDEXEL maths.
I read this morning that the 2 who were arrested were released. Not sure why ?not enough evidence and 79 papers have been held back on releasing results .
I am not good at summarising...
I will see if i can find it again .

Sorry i said 79 it is 78.

bizzey · 10/08/2019 16:01

Thank you NewModelArmy !@NewModelArmyMayhemy

(Ds 3 not here to help !!)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/08/2019 16:04

Find it hard to believe that the number is only 78. In this era of social media comms spreading like wildfire?

OP posts:
Mustbetimeforachange · 10/08/2019 16:24

Exactly NewModel. DS is very scathing about their pronouncements!

Piggywaspushed · 10/08/2019 16:46

I am interested that clearing is higher than insurance. Kinds at my school are very risk averse. the only ones I know who have done clearing have bombed grades for insurance as well. So what that suggests is that there is not a very big gap between firm and insurance offers : which make sense . The lowest grades I could find for politics at a kind of standard uni (ie not an FE college and not in the bottom 10 of league tables) was BCC. The highest if I take out the most prestigious institutions is about ABB, so not much wiggle room there.

I would imagine those who are able enough to have firm offers I the A* AA range would take an insurance down to about AAB but not much lower so again could fall down.

I think the 78 by the way are those who are known to have recirculated the maths paper/ have been found to have acted upon it is some way. My spies tell me 78 equates to a whole centre , so there is something very dodgy. The two people released will have been released pending enquiries I assume. No mention of being cleared of charges.

Piggywaspushed · 10/08/2019 16:48

I also have no idea whatsoever what DS will get. Unlikely to do as well as his PGs (BBC) . Bleakest outlook is failing outright at least one. He really did not revise large chunks of the syllabus and his teachers really seemed to give up on him.

MrKlaw · 10/08/2019 16:52

@piggywaspushed that insurance Vs clearing is odd. You’re right that it suggests insurance choice being close to firm - but why would you do that? If you miss your firm you’re likely to miss your insurance too - not very good insurance

My DS picked an insurance quote a few grades below his firm for that reason

Piggywaspushed · 10/08/2019 16:54

Because there isn't always a few grades to play with.?

My DS was offered (excluding unconditionals) between BBC and BCC from 5 different unis. This is one of the very things that made him take a UiF offer.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/08/2019 16:59

Agree @Piggywaspushed. DS's firm is AAB, insurance ABC/BBB and the other three which made his final five offered him AAA, AAB and ABB.

HostessTrolley · 10/08/2019 17:08

My d only had one grade between her firm and insurance because no med school offers below AAA unless there’s contextual
data involved. Her insurance have said they’d almost certainly accept A*AB, and can sometimes accept AAB on results day, depending on how the results go across the whole group of offer holders - they’d rather take someone they’ve interviewed who just missed the grades than take someone through clearing that either they’ve rejected at interview or haven’t interviewed, just for the sake of a few marks.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/08/2019 17:29

That makes sense @HostessTrolley - good luck to your DD.

OP posts:
Decorhate · 10/08/2019 17:51

I’ve always felt it was important that they pick an insurance they would be perfectly happy to go to rather than one with a much lower offer they don’t really like. Perhaps that’s why the statistics are the way they are if lots of people do the same.

It may be risky but for ds there should be places in clearing with much lower grade requirements if it all goes pear shaped on results day. He has already visited a couple.

Anyone else's son receive a razor in the post today from UCAS (though actually Gilette sponsored)?? I am still trying to work out what the message behind it is supposed to be - "Don't worry about your A level results because at least you can be clean shaven!" or maybe "If you fail, you can still get a job by shaving with one of our razors." or "Set off to University with a clean shaven face." Seriously bemused by this one!

Piggywaspushed · 10/08/2019 21:03

No, but mine could definitely do with a prompt to shave!

Baytreemum · 10/08/2019 21:05

Sluj, New, Must - totally with you there - Edexel are just trying it on making out that only 78 people saw the leak - info like that spreads in milliseconds. They have said absolutely nothing that gives me any confidence in their 'efforts' to rectify their pathetic attempt at running a fair exam.

Mustbetimeforachange · 10/08/2019 21:16

I'd forgotten DS1 got a razor 2 year's ago. Bizarre (& he has a beard Grin). What do the girls get?

sluj · 10/08/2019 22:14

No razor here or any thing else from any university. Is it a sign?Grin

Mustbetimeforachange · 10/08/2019 22:19

I've just found something on Twitter which says that UCAS sent razors to makes who opted in to get mailings from UCAS media
