They set boundaries after reviewing results? So a high FM would potentially indicate a simpler exam so the boundaries are higher?

Just guessing as it’s the first year I hope our kids aren’t hampered by that

MrKlaw · 14/08/2019 15:20

(Can’t edit)

Just that mine does need A*s for his firm

Mustbetimeforachange · 14/08/2019 15:35

Yes MrKlaw, they are set after the results to maintain comparability between years. DS has struggled a bit with FM, but found the exams "OK" so that fits.

Propertyfaux · 14/08/2019 15:58

DS1 is much calmer reading the leaked Edexcel grade boundaries for maths so will definitely sleep a bit better tonight.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/08/2019 15:58

Encouraging post on anther related thread from someone who works in HE:

"In all seriousness - if you want a year where your DC can fuck up this is it - decline in birth rate means Universities falling over themselves to get places filled. Very few HEIs expect to hit target. Tariffs will be dropping to get bums on seats. All will be well."

Been lurking on this thread but having just eaten far too much chocolate and read the leaked grade boundaries thought I'd pop up for some moral support!

Bowbridge · 14/08/2019 16:01

What is the procedure if you want to defer an offer and take a gap year? The university will need to know that an extra place is available for Sept 2019, but will they be too busy tomorrow to ring?

2919HereWeGo · 14/08/2019 16:02

Newmodel - good news hopefully!!
Does anyone know if they drop the grades tomorrow as clearing looking v sparse on DDs chosen subject.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/08/2019 16:04

@Bowbridge maybe ring the general admissions number (or department) rather than the university's Clearing hotline? Maybe phone today?

Welcome @2919HereWeGo the more the merrier. I have no chocolate or wine in the house - clearly a massive mistake!!!

Thanks @NewModelArmyMayhem18 !

DD has found the grade boundaries for OCE RS. She reckons she needs 28/29 for each essay to get an A. Teachers have been marking her essays at 28, 29 but she did get one at 32, so who knows. So from what we know from released grade boundaries, sounds like she could have a firm A and possible A. Three As are needed for her firm which she desperately wants!

Bowbridge - if your DC is around, get them to phone today and check if their uni will allow deferred entry for their subject. That way, they at least know if it's possible and the procedure. DD was considering a gap year originally, but Edinburgh told her she couldn't defer for her subject.

ZandathePanda · 14/08/2019 16:22

Dd’s Firm has just gone out of clearing. She was worried it was still in clearing (it never has been before). Now she’s worried it’s gone from clearing!!

I did badly in my A Levels, had a cry, got The Guardian, looked at the supplement with a list of spaces and courses left and rang them up. Talked my way in to great RB uni.

Seemed much simpler then.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/08/2019 16:32

I think there's just too much choice and information available these days. It's not entirely reassuring and just gives more to worry about plus the inevitable FOMO on something vital!

We have chocolate and wine on hand for this evening Wine and Chocolate for everyone who needs it!

Bowbridge · 14/08/2019 16:37

DC is working and I have just looked at the office hours. They are 9-4.30pm. So it will have to be tomorrow. They could email tonight to give them a heads-up, her reasons and a phone number.

Thanks for the advice.

juicy0 · 14/08/2019 16:38

Can someone point me in the direction of the ocr grade boundaries please as I can't find them. Thanks

Decorhate · 14/08/2019 16:38

If we are doing Clearing tomorrow, which newspapers have the lists?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/08/2019 16:38

That sounds a very sensible course of action. Good luck to your DC.

I’ve just eaten a large bag of Minstrels in the car - probably shouldn’t have any more chocolate, even virtual! Sneaked a peek at OCR History and grade boundaries look as expected - roughly 80% A* and 70% for A.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/08/2019 16:40

I screenshot the pages that were relevant to DS (History and Geography with) if that's any help @juicy0. There are other subjects (nearby in the alphabet) included.

I am suddenly anxious!
My Ds has said he isn't making any arrangements to go out with friends tomorrow night because it could be 'awkward' if some end up euphoric and others upset. I'm not sure what he is expecting.
We don't seem to be as clued up on how many marks he got on the papers - how do they calculate how many marks they picked up, or not?

He should be OK on Maths...Chemistry and Physics are the other subjects.

TapasForTwo · 14/08/2019 16:48

What are the implications of a course being in clearing? DD's chosen course at the university she wants to go to is in clearing.

Apart from meaning that they haven't had enough applicants does this mean that her cohort will have a lower grade average? The grades they are asking for are on UCAS haven't been lowered at all.

What does it say about the university if they have a huge number of courses in clearing?

Fibbsdottir · 14/08/2019 16:50

Hallo! I've been on the thread before but had to name change.

I'm in a complete pickle about tomorrow. Dd has already repeated a year so this is her last chance! Her firm needs an A (she already has an A, a C and an A in EPQ).

My question is - her course is now no longer in clearing - it was on Friday. What does that mean??
