Just when exam season gets fully underway our previous thread has almost filled up. Everyone welcome Wink.

Last aqa maths went ok here. What is the furore over leaked edexel papers?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/06/2019 16:54

It's all on Twitter. Looks like some people had access to the full paper before the exam. Pictures of a scribbled out version were on Twitter before the exam with someone tweeting that it was for sale. There was some discussion saying it wasn't the paper...but it turned out it was. Now there are screenshots of the whole paper from a chat with someone saying it turned it on their maths chat yesterday. Edexcel have made a statement saying they will somehow make everything fair in the marking...but no one seems very convinced by that. Meanwhile teens who took maths in good faith, didn't cheat, learned from the textbook and practiced on the sample and last year's papers are rightly v upset.

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2019 16:58

DS finished yesterday. Feeling a bit anti -climactic because he is so underwhelmed, he has engaged in no euphoric behaviour, he has ate the entire cake I bought for him without even sharing a small bit, and.... yes... he has broken his laptop again.

And the subject I teach and adore had its first ever 'reformed' exam at GCSE today and it was ridiculously hard.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/06/2019 16:58

bizzey haven't really had a proper look at the article yet...

That maths thing is appalling!! OMG.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/06/2019 17:06

Meanwhile teens who took maths in good faith, didn't cheat, learned from the textbook and practiced on the sample and last year's papers are rightly v upset. That's awful and potentially so unfair.

Surely they should get schools to flag up any wildly surprising (better than expected) results. Or this might be the paper to be based on predicted grades only (thereby rendering the exam a waste of time).

Aren't the papers 'micro-chipped' now, so they will be able to determine how the leak happened pretty quickly.

laniakea I think that's the right thing to do, surely those topics which form such a large part of the syllabus, such as genetics, must come up??

LIZS · 14/06/2019 17:13

And it has happened before Shock I don't see how it can be made fair either within the edexel cohort or in comparison with other boards.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/06/2019 17:18

Is it possible they would have to retake it on the 28th? Just wondering why Edexcel didn't just cancel today's exam?

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2019 17:24

The Twitter account is certainly traceable.

sluj · 14/06/2019 17:28

DS thought Edexcel maths papers 1 and 3 weren't too bad but paper 2 was terrible. He is fed up that some had an opportunity to cheat with paper 3 and thinks this might push grade boundaries up. Mostly he is just celebrating never having to do maths again 🤞

Mustbetimeforachange · 14/06/2019 17:28

My DD says he saw it about 5 minutes before the exam, but it was a scribbled out version with the price of £70 for the whole thing. Presumably there are plenty of people who saw this earlier & parted with £70. If they had an awful time in paper 2 you can perhaps understand the temptation. Bloody Edexcel.

Witchend · 14/06/2019 17:31

Dd said the paper 3 was fairly okay.

Apparently the leak was late last night with someone offering it for sale (apparently it started low and quickly rose). Some people put 2 questions on line with bits scribbled out so you could see the diagram but not the questions, so not very helpful really.

She got a text after from someone saying had they heard it had been leaked, but no one said anything before (despite being on a number of maths group chats), so I don't think it's as extensive as all that.

It wouldn't really be fair to ask them to resit. Just imagine if you hadn't seen the paper, and did really well in this one and then made a hash of the resit. They really had to stop it before anyone sat it.

You also can't compare it with the other exams as they were pure and these were applied, so people could naturally be better at one.

Witchend · 14/06/2019 17:42

Mustbetimeforachange DD thought that it was offered for £70 initially, but by this morning the price was into the £100s. That's the story that her friend told her anyway.

whereshalligo · 14/06/2019 17:46

According to the oracle of Twitter it was the full paper that was leaked not just two questions. The whole exam has been a disaster from start to finish. So many uni plans rest on these grades.

Shimy · 14/06/2019 17:52

Shock Just arrived to pick DS up and he’s told me about the leak! I hope to God they catch the culprits. DS said today’s paper was much better and it’ll be devastating if they are all punished for the misdemeanour of others.

5LeafClover · 14/06/2019 18:08

I can't see by what method edexcel can 'make everything fair' through the grade boundaries. Papers 1and 2 were an unfair mess (and also according to Twitter also potentially leaked). Paper 3 was apparently a decent paper, but definitely leaked. Shockingly bad.

Madhairday · 14/06/2019 18:13

So awful about the leaks. Dd doesn't do maths but her friends who do are really upset about it, they were already upset about the content and this has exacerbated it all Sad
Do you think it's exaggerated and not many actually saw it?

Dd edexcel psychology went well today mainly, she said. Couple of nasty questions including one where they had to draw a histogram. Dd said she was desperately delving back into GCSE maths knowledge for how to do one!!

zxcv123 · 14/06/2019 18:51

Edexcel seems to be a regular culprit with leaked Maths papers. A couple of years ago there was a similar leak on Twitter the night before. Edexcel instantly was able to identify which school/area was involved and delivered different exam papers just to that school/area for them to sit Grin

If I remember correctly, last year there was also someone offering a Maths A-level paper online for money the night before. I read in the news recently that the individual has been identified and is due to stand trial shortly.

So, although upsetting for all concerned, I'm sure Edexcel will do everything they can to put it right.

MrKlaw · 14/06/2019 19:00

Fingers crossed on maths, this is my son’s resit from last year (he really wants A* for his target uni) and he seemed much better this year. So I hope edexcel don’t screw things up for those that worked hard.

MrKlaw · 14/06/2019 19:06

@bizzey HSBC and Santander look like the pick of the accounts

Mustbetimeforachange · 14/06/2019 19:10

DS said it was incredibly widely spread rather than just in the odd school. He's really fed up about it.

Mustbetimeforachange · 14/06/2019 19:11

And he says that both papers 1 & 2 were leaked as well.

Scabetty · 14/06/2019 19:12

Madhairday, dd said the same about the histogram. Thought apart from that it wad a good paper. All done here.
