New thread started. Here's the previous one

Ahh thank you very much that's really helpful to know. I'm really excited for DS1 and the chat on this thread is really useful. He'll be getting the minimum maintenance loan but prefers his own loo to the advantage of rolling out of bed and in to lecture so we're going for private halls. Also they seem to be slightly cheaper than uni managed halls where he's going. I think I've decided and explained to DH we'll pay his accommodation and he has to live on the loan plus get a part time job.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/05/2019 14:17

That getting the part-time job is key for many of the young people, DS included.

Of course, the 'short' rental period only applies while they are living in halls. Once they rent privately, I presume they will have to rent somewhere for the whole 52 weeks (and pay a sizeable deposit).

Hot off the press!
University league tables 2020

VanCleefArpels · 01/05/2019 15:44

Thanks Shimy although DD subject not on that list 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m having a proud mum monent.
DS1 has just been offered a place on a model making degree course.
He put in a late application and had to submit an online portfolio.
It’s been a long road he’s 21, he crased out of A levels in lower 6th, did a 2 year Btec course which he just passed, spent a year working in a restaurant, then in January started a 6 month course which he’s loving and made the last minute decision to apply to uni.
We’ve always wanted him to go to uni, as it was such a great experience for both myself and DH and having visited so many with DS2 I just kept on thinking DS1 would love this.
So it’s looking like come September both my boys will be leaving home, it’s going to be a quiet in my house.....
Providing they both pass....

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/05/2019 16:09

Itscoldouthere - congratulations to your DS1 - that's an amazing result. Is he really pleased? I imagine he will be in a really strong position once he's done his degree too.

VanCleef what's her subject? you'll probably have to filter by the higher level course. Was it listed in last yrs?

itscold - Congratulations to your ds. Double celebrations in your house. May i ask what type of models he'll be making? is it clay? its sounds very interesting.

Itscoldouthere · 01/05/2019 16:30

Thank you for the congratulations.
Shimy - it’s all sorts of models, architectural, 3D models, props, computer drawn models, he should cover the lot.

Shimy · 01/05/2019 16:37

Oops! i was thinking of a very narrow section of Art. it sounds like a great course. Hope he enjoys it.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/05/2019 16:40

Itscoldouthere, it sounds a really interesting course. Is he hoping to work in films?

Piggy great news to hear that your DS is starting to get motivated.

Nerve-wracking but exciting times ahead.

New model - yes ideally he’s currently doing a part time course at Pinewood Studios, but feels he needs more time to develop and learn.

VanCleefArpels · 01/05/2019 17:02

Criminology so nothing too obscure!

ifonly4 · 01/05/2019 17:20

Itscoldoutthere - congratulations to your DS. You have every right to be proud

Thanks for the link VanCleef. Another here with a niche course, although, really pleased to see both her firm and insurance are up!

Decorhate · 01/05/2019 17:42

@Itscoldouthere Our local uni does a course like that which looks amazing. Perhaps that’s where your ds is going!!

Piggywaspushed · 01/05/2019 18:11

Model making is where it's at in the UK film industry. I take it he's been to Warner Bros and seen the amzing models thye make there for Harry Potter? It's an ideal career path for Britsh talented graphic designers! Well done him. I teach a girl who wants to get into set design and film art, too.

Itscoldouthere · 01/05/2019 18:14

Decorhate - it’s Bournemouth Arts
He’s also got an interview next week at Hertfordshire University, but it’s a bit close to home, so Bournemouth is more appealing. Not sure if there are other courses, he only found those 2 but it was all a bit hurried, so he didn’t really have time to do through research.

Piggywaspushed · 01/05/2019 18:14

That's an interesting league table. Nice to see Hull back on the up.

What on earth is happening at York? It used to be a solid top 10 uni.

Itscoldouthere · 01/05/2019 18:18

Piggy - oh yes his GF is a massive Harry Potter fan, they both went again a few month ago, although he also went with school when he was about 15.

He’s seen some pretty cool stuff whilst he’s been at Pinewood, although he’s not allowed to talk about it, they all have to sign confidentiality agreements !

Itscoldouthere · 01/05/2019 18:22

Must say a big thank you to you all for your lovely comments and interest and support.
I’ve been having a few tricky things going on in my life lately and this really has been the best day.... 🍾

Piggywaspushed · 01/05/2019 18:23

Yes, they do at WB too! We look at scripts when I go there but we can only see them on screen and they are all watermarked so if they leave the building everyone can see who is responsible. We are absolutely not allowed to take photos of them!

Random fact : Tom Cruise was climbing scaffolding when I was there and Chris Hemsworth was in a hot tub next door (didn't see him; was just told). Not distracting at all.

Shimy · 01/05/2019 18:32

itscold - Imagine him getting a gig like GOT.

I'd like to know what happened to York too. Harper Adams climbed 21 places. Essex down 18 places.

Piggywaspushed · 01/05/2019 18:37

It's a funny old list. I mean Harper Adams is really niche, isn't it??
I am sure there are some people haing palpitations at the continuing rise of NTU and Lincoln Wink

Shimy · 01/05/2019 18:41

Haha! yes re: Palpitations Smile. I'm not really surprised re: Essex though, we discussed it extensively on here.

Shimy · 01/05/2019 18:43

I wish they would write a short commentary on what has led to the rise or fall alongside the rankings. It would be more informative.
