Hi a new thread with DC applying to Vet Med next year or for anyone with DC already studying who could pass on some words of wisdom!

My DD is looking to apply to Cambridge, Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol.
She has a fair amount of work experience arranged already and we will do the open day circuit next year.

@Scottandcharlene ah that's a shame. But must be so hard. We don't know any farmers at all. Uni trying to organise but so hard as having to place 2nd years who has there's cancelled. Sure they'll get something. She's emailed loads of places and has poultry and equine sorted. And small animal. Just cows and sheep.

Scottandcharlene · 23/11/2020 18:48

If your dd uses Twitter it might be worth following some farm accounts and asking that way. Lots of farmers are really active on there and the word can soon spread with a few retweets. If I think of anywhere I will dm you, I don’t know if my dd has got anything sorted yet - we are just getting hamster news at the moment 🙄

mumsneedwine · 23/11/2020 18:56

@Scottandcharlene thank you so much. I'll see if can find some farms. Have told her to contact the farm vet she worked for so hoping she's now done that.

Bati · 24/11/2020 10:04

Nice to see your dd's are having a good experience and enjoying their time at uni.

Nothing has changed for dd. So far she has only had that 1 dissection where they were all in silence, 2 meters apart. Otherwise everything else still on line. There was supposed to be another dissection next minth but that has been cancelled.
On a positive note, She is going to leahurst this week so i have my fingers crossed she gets to actually talk to other vets this time and can start making some friends.
She spends all her time in a her flat, only goes out for food shopping. There is 3 others in the flat. They do spend sometime together but not much.
Vets students have been told they can not do any ems until at least april due to covid.
I am preying liverpool will not be in tier 3 after lockdown so she can have some sort of life.

Scottandcharlene · 24/11/2020 11:39

Hi @Bati, it is good news that your dd is going to Leahurst. Hopefully she will meet some other vet students and see a glimpse of what the future will be like. It really does look like things will be much more normal next year so your dd will get a chance to get a better experience. It also sounds like things have improved hugely in Liverpool which will mean life will be a bit easier in December.

Lovecatsanddogs · 24/11/2020 11:44

Hi @Bati hope your DD enjoys Leahurst. I hope all of our DC have more freedom and experiences next term.

Bati · 27/11/2020 06:30

Hi
Dd loved Leahurst and met some lovely students who she really go along with.
I am hoping with the vaccine coming soon and liverpool going into tier 2 that not long after Christmas they will start doing more than just online lecture with them x

Scottandcharlene · 27/11/2020 07:47

So glad to hear your dd has a good day @Bati and great that Liverpool in Tier 2 now.

Lovecatsanddogs · 27/11/2020 08:20

@Bati - that's really good news! Glad your did had a great day.

mumsneedwine · 27/11/2020 17:37

Great news @Bati . Things will get better and more fun for them. DD been to Langford this week and has signed for a 7 bed house (that is nicer than ours). I'm amazed at how well they have all coped with this first term. It's never easy normally but this has been something else. She's coming home on 6th. Eldest bit until 16th as doing medicine stuff. I don't break up from school until 18th so doesn't bother me 😊

Scottandcharlene · 27/11/2020 19:40

Dd has signed for a 6 bed house, with parking for 6 cars too and she sent me a photo of her with her arm up a cow. As dh said, a good place on a cold day!

ipredictariot5 · 29/12/2020 17:12

Hi All - longtime no speak
Hope everyone’s DDs are doing ok and your DD @Bati is getting on a bit better at Liverpool - it’s been tough for all of them. My DD has struggled with the online but then settled into it and had a couple of F2F dissections and a trip
To Leahurst to meet a few vets. Accommodation been tougher with
Worries about other students breaking rules and vet school
Sending out email to warn students to maintain covid rules. She’s home now studying and been into library today. Booked lambing for Easter.
Overall I am pleased with how
She has coped but it’s been a tough first term

Bati · 31/12/2020 07:05

Hi all, hope you all had a lovely christmas.
@ipredictariot5 its been very hard for the vet students at liverpool. Is your dd staying home now or is she going to go back to halls.
Dd was looking forward to going back as there were going to be some practicals coming up however after Boris announcement yesterday she received an email from liverpool uni last night cancelling them all 😢 understandable she is disappointed, how is your dd feeling about this.
She has mentioned quite a few people on the vet chat have mentioned deferring as they dont really see the point anymore and some have even talked about quitting which is such a shame.
Dd has also mentioned some people have already sorted out houses and housemates for next year. No idea what dd is going to do over that as she doesn't really know anyone to sort out sharing a house with, she was hoping the practicals would have enabled her to start to form some strong friendships but thats not going to happen now.
I worry about her going back as she has spent most of her time so far in a room on her own, which is not healthy.
I feel all i do is moan on here about liverpool, so sorry for the negativity.
Hope everyone else dd's are getting on ok and are having a lot better experience than those at liverpool x

Scottandcharlene · 31/12/2020 11:51

My dd is going back to Nottingham on Saturday. She can’t wait to get back. Although the first term hasn’t been anywhere near normal, she has had a great time with weekly practical sessions for both dissection and animal handling skills. She has been able to make lots of friends and the university have done a brilliant job of regular testing which made everyone feel safe, they also tried to organise fun things like a ghost walk at Halloween and bbqs. I think the thing which puts some people off Nottingham, which is its isolation from the main campus, has really worked in its favour this year, allowing a bit more freedom in very challenging times. I am really sorry to hear of students giving up, they worked so hard to get there it is just so unfair. I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Christmas and that next term is better for all. DD1 is in London so couldn’t come home - I can’t wait to see her 😢

mumsneedwine · 31/12/2020 12:06

@Bati reading your post made me so sad. They fight so hard to get in and this year has tested them all. I really hope your DD can stick it out as things will get better and she will make friends. They have 4 more years left and when back to normal they will appreciate things so much more.
DD going back to Bristol in a week to do exams. She has had a great first term and had weekly dissection and some practical stuff too. Lots more planned for this term so fingers crossed. She has signed up for a house next year with her current flatmates and 2 others (one also a vet). Lots of work but she's loved learning. Just wishes she could meet more people but they all feel like that I think. Be good if sports can start again soon as that's a great way to meet people. She has lambing EMS organised and also some dairy, poultry and equine for the summer (made her feel positive getting stuff to look forward to).
Bristol have been amazing and given them quite a big rent reduction. And looked after them very well when they had to isolate as flatmate was positive. She loves the city and staff all been v friendly and helpful, but it's not perfect and they all have their down days as wasn't what wanted, but things will get better. They'd get better quicker if they'd shut the schools but that's another story (secondary teacher here !!). Happy new year everyone.

Lovecatsanddogs · 31/12/2020 12:43

I am sorry @Bati that Liverpool is not improving for your DD. I really hope things get better and she starts to enjoy her course and the city.
Is there a Vet Whatsapp chat where she could maybe broach the subject of a house next year? My DD is looking forward to returning and has been working all holidays mostly but is worried in case she gets locked down for 2 weeks as so far has escaped this. Cambridge and her college have been good to them and weekly testing helps a lot.

ipredictariot5 · 03/01/2021 22:46

Hi @Bati - it’s tough -
Sounds like other vet schools have been keeping the practicals up more. I think Liverpool suffered with a massive spike in covid in sept/ Oct and hospital v stretched ( I am a medic) so university and city shut down earlier than other areas
There does seem to be a v active vet Facebook chat maybe she could find flatmates there?
Liverpool is a fantastic place to be a student and it will get better. First year is rubbish just now but my DD is trying to make the best of it - she finds academic work harder than other students I think so is establishing really good study habits instead of having a social life
Do I remember correctly you are local? My DD has moved back home for now and is getting a rent rebate

mumsneedwine · 25/07/2021 15:12

Hi, for some reason this thread popped up and I thought I'd say hello. Hope everyone had a good last few months of first year, and ready for hopefully better times in Sept 🤞.
DD currently on a dairy farm and then onto doing chickens. I'm secretly glad she's not out clubbing ! Although has Reading tickets for August. She has grown up so much !

Lovecatsanddogs · 25/07/2021 15:23

Hi yes DD has the dairy farm and then 2 weeks cats this Summer. DD has had a good year and made some good friends despite everthing. She is happy she didn't defer.

Scottandcharlene · 26/07/2021 12:48

Hello, it’s been a long time since this thread was active! All good here, dd had a good year considering and is really looking forward to moving into her second year house at the beginning of September. After avoiding self isolation and covid all year she went on holiday with friends, got pinged on return and then tested positive. Fortunately she isolated with her friends so it didn’t impact on us and she had much more fun than she would have stuck in her bedroom. Really hope that September will bring more normality for everyone.
