Hi a new thread with DC applying to Vet Med next year or for anyone with DC already studying who could pass on some words of wisdom!

My DD is looking to apply to Cambridge, Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol.
She has a fair amount of work experience arranged already and we will do the open day circuit next year.

Dd has had a huge amount of information sent today and I’m pretty sure stethoscope is on the compulsory list, but I guess everywhere is different in what they need. So pleased to hear the u turn news - hope your sobbing students are happy @mumsneedwine.

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2020 18:54

@Scottandcharlene mixed feelings Fi it some as original Unis saying they will get an offer for next year. Or if lucky this - depends on spaces. It is huge mess. But at least they saw sense in the end.

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2020 18:54

Sorry typed too fast. Mixed feelings for some 😊

handmedownqueen · 18/08/2020 08:54

@Bati if you search Liverpool Freshers 2020 on facebook that should point you in the right direction. DD now in grip of imposter syndrome that she's not good enough for the course !!

Bati · 18/08/2020 09:07

@handmedownqueen
I can understand the imposter bit. They have had to do so much just to get to this point, it must seem very overwhelming to have finally made it.
What accommodation has your dd been given. Dd has been given green bank, but we are not happy with that and are now looking at private halls that are either next door to the university halls or opposite them that are on the campus, some have their own cinemas and gyms too 😍

mumsneedwine · 18/08/2020 09:09

My DD seems to be one of the few who don't own a horse 😂.

Scottandcharlene · 18/08/2020 09:26

Does anyone know anything about the jabs they need? I thought they were already covered by boosters but dd says she has to have a tetanus jab.

mumsneedwine · 18/08/2020 09:39

Occupational health should contact them to let them know if need anything. If it's like medicine the Uni organise everything once they start. DD was a pin cushion first few weeks.

Scottandcharlene · 18/08/2020 09:43

Thanks @mumsneedwine it was from occupational health, saying they had to get them before they arrived. I didn’t actually see the message as was a bit busy yesterday but dd said something about tetanus and bcg. I will have a look what it says later.

handmedownqueen · 18/08/2020 10:48

The private halls can be a bit hit and miss I hear I wasn’t keen on greenbank being out of town
Where were your choices ?

handmedownqueen · 18/08/2020 10:51

You should ring accommodation today too and Make sure she is top of WL for preferred accommodation as there is going to be movement I think with the news yesterday and might be space

Bati · 18/08/2020 11:07

@handmedownqueen
I didnt realise how many private halls there are in liverpool.
We have narrowed it down to 3.
1 - IQ - its litterally opposite the university Dover court accomodation and on the same road as the vet building.
2 - host (my favourite) same distance but the other way and 3 minute walk to sports building. It has its own cinema and a gym
3 - arrad house which 5 minute walk to vet school and 3 minutes to sports centre.

So all 3 seem to be campus base but privately owned.
I have spoken to all 3, one did a zoom viewing and we are heading into liverpool this today as we have an appointment with another one of them this afternoon.

Bati · 18/08/2020 18:02

@handmedownqueen
We have phoned accommodation and she is nowhere near the top of the list for moving 🙁
We have spent the afternoon in liverpool.
Walked to all 3 of the ones we are looking at.
They are all in the thick of the university area 😊
We went to Arrad and hadn't realised it is part of a student village, its at the back of the cathedral and to the left slightly.
There is a few buildings as part of the village. We got shown around the cambridge court building. One building there is called Cedar house, which the university actually rent for students as part of their accommodation even though it is owned by Unite.
Dd likes all 3 of the halls we went to, they were all ensuites and had a living area in the kitchen.
Now its time to make decisions.

What accommodation did your dd get.
Initially my dd put down crown for 2 of her options and melville for the 3rd option.

3catsandadog · 14/09/2020 20:20

Hi when are DC all off to uni? We have a couple more weeks. I am hoping not all online!

mumsneedwine · 14/09/2020 20:35

Saturday 😳. She is terrified. Big sis goes back Friday. Just hoping she has got nice mates and settles quickly. All going to be v different to normal.

Scottandcharlene · 14/09/2020 22:37

Saturday for my dd, she’s very excited but also nervous. She got an iPad today from the university using a £400 voucher to spend on something to help with learning which was a very generous surprise. I am beginning to wake up early and worry about things, which I remember doing when Dd1 went. Very different worries this time though. Good luck to everyone 🙂

Scottandcharlene was a lovely surprise for your dd 😍
Dd was able to pick her keys up for her accommodation a couple of weeks ago although uni doesn't start till next month. We are only 45 mins away so we have picked up her keys and moved some of her things in but she wont be actually going till nearer the time.

mumsneedwine · 16/09/2020 20:47

Huge welcome pack arrived today. Clothes and boots ordered, which are very nicely free. Except the posh coat but apparently everyone has one so that's ordered too. Think it made her excited as seems real now.

Scottandcharlene · 16/09/2020 22:18

@Bati that’s great that you can move in slowly and nice to be so near home with everything that’s going on. Dd will be an hour and 15 minutes away, so not too bad.

@ mumsneedwine nice to have free clothes. Dd has had to pay for hers - perhaps that’s how they can afford to give away iPads!

2 more days at home. Gulp.

mumsneedwine · 17/09/2020 18:13

Eldest going back tomorrow into year 3. Then youngest on Saturday. Going from a bustling house for the last 6 months to just me as hubbie (& dog). It's going to be v weird. Good luck everyone. Whatever the next few months brings 'this too shall pass'.

Scottandcharlene · 21/09/2020 20:04

Hope you are getting used to your quiet house @mumsneedwine, moving in day went well on Saturday for us, hope yours did too 🙂

mumsneedwine · 21/09/2020 20:08

@Scottandcharlene it's v quiet. And weird. But girls have FaceTimed so still speaking lots. Although I think they only call to see the dog 🐕 . DD has met up with some vets several times and can't wait to get started properly. Hope everyone is doing ok

Scottandcharlene · 21/09/2020 20:27

I thought the students were all going to be bubbled with course mates, but dd is with non-vets in her flat. She has found vets nearby though and seems very happy so far.

mumsneedwine · 21/09/2020 21:17

DD with non vets too. Has a vet next door and school friend is living with a vet. They have a vet chat, a hall vet chat and an all year vet chat ! But her flat mates are zoology to law.
