Hi a new thread with DC applying to Vet Med next year or for anyone with DC already studying who could pass on some words of wisdom!

My DD is looking to apply to Cambridge, Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol.
She has a fair amount of work experience arranged already and we will do the open day circuit next year.

@Mum7400 can I be a pain and ask your DS to send DD an invite to the group chat. She was too scared to join until now. She's very nice !

Mum7400 · 13/08/2020 10:08

@mumsneedwine of course email me [email protected]

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2020 10:15

@Mum7400 thank you 😊

Bati · 13/08/2020 10:27

Quick question
Do they need to accept anything on ucas or do anything to confirm they are still going x

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2020 10:43

No, just read the confirmation letter in UCAS. And then read the email Uni will send them today. Usually there is nothing to do for a while - unless still need to apply for accommodation.

Bati · 13/08/2020 10:46

She has already applied for accomodation 😊

YorkshireTeaIsTheBest · 13/08/2020 13:47

Well done all your DC. I'm sorry to post on your thread but thought now might be a suitable time - but I have a DC is going to apply to a couple of years -
But looking back -what do you wish you had known, what would you encourage your DC if you had your time again (Covid outbreak). Thanks and congratulations to you all!

Very late in the day as I seem to have been busy WhatsApping a million friends and relatives but great news here too with DD off to Nottingham. I’m so pleased everyone got in - what a terrible experience this has been! I feel jet-lagged as I have had so little sleep for the last few nights. @YorkshireTeaIsTheBest - it’s probably not the best time to ask as it has been such a nightmare process, but I would say you all need to be very resilient as every stage is difficult. Will probably be able to offer more advice at another time but just now I need to lie down in a dark room while DD is getting ready to celebrate with her friends!

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2020 17:51

@Scottandcharlene so happy with your news. Nottingham was in clearing this morning which was a surprise. They must have been v strict on dropped grades. Enjoy celebrating 🥳

Bati · 13/08/2020 18:05

Does anyone know if there is a vetmed chat 2020 for liverpool

@yorkshiretealsthebest my advise is try and get lots of different types of placements. She will learn a lot and will give her plenty to talk about at interviews.

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2020 18:11

@YorkshireTeaIsTheBest will get back to you. Brain is a bit fried after today.

3catsandadog · 13/08/2020 18:15

@YorkshireTeaIsTheBest
My DD made loads of notes after each work placement that she referred to before interviews and before answering online interview questions.

@mumsneedwine I saw that Nottingham was in clearing when I was checking my phone at 2.00 am, which didn’t help with my sleep - I didn’t know what that mine mean for my dd! Perhaps their recent increase in numbers has just made their predictions more difficult in such an unpredictable year.

handmedownqueen · 14/08/2020 23:31

@bati DD in a FB Liverpool vet 2020 group

Bati · 15/08/2020 14:04

@handmedownqueen I had a look a couple of days ago for liverpool vet 2020 on fb but couldn't find one. I will look again.
What accomodation has your dd applied for - mine has put crown as her 1st choice x

mumsneedwine · 15/08/2020 14:22

@handmedownqueen maybe @Bati could get an invite sent to your DD. The very lovely @Mum7400 got her DS to do that for my DD.

Scottandcharlene · 15/08/2020 14:33

How quickly we move on - after the awful stress of the last few months dd is now happily deciding what colour stethoscope to order! I meanwhile am seething over the disgrace of moderation. How different things could have been. I feel so very sad for those poor students have been unfairly treated and missed out on university places. The stress must be enormous. I’ve written to my mp for only the second time in my life! (The first time being over Dominic Cummings....)

mumsneedwine · 15/08/2020 14:39

@Scottandcharlene tell her to hold off on the stethoscope- she will likely get a voucher from Uni. Weirdly by eldest at medical school will probably have the same one to use on humans. Get it engraved too when you do get one as they get left lying around.
As a teacher this week has been hell. Once I knew DD was ok, after a v sleepless night,I looked at my schools grades. Some have done well and most are ok. But there are a few horrible outcomes, for bright lovely kids, who have had their futures tuned upside down by an algorithm. I broke all social distancing on Thursday afternoon and gave out hugs to sobbing students, who just didn't understand how this had happened to them. I don't either.
So as happy I am due DD I am furious at the process.

Scottandcharlene · 15/08/2020 17:07

Thanks for the stethoscope tip - from the group chat dd is on it seems to be what everyone is buying 🙂

Mum7400 · 16/08/2020 11:50

Great tip for stethoscope thank you

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2020 12:05

It's exciting and so they want to buy stuff. But lots of things will be free & bulk discounts for other stuff. DDs stethoscope is raspberry 😊. I'd get advice if going to buy one as they do different things - do not ask me what though !

Gordonsgrin · 17/08/2020 12:49

Stethoscope is a lovely thing to buy but my DD, now fifth year at Bristol didn’t get one till third year, neither did any of her friends. Hers was a lovely one bought as a Christmas pressie from grsmdparents. I think lithmann is the name, I can get more details if required.

Bati · 17/08/2020 13:14

@Gordonsgrin I litterally have no idea where to start looking and what to look for when it comes to stethoscopes, so I would love some details of where to go and what dd should be looking for, thanks x

Bati · 17/08/2020 14:18

@handmedownqueen dd has had an email over her accomodation.
She has been given one that was not one of the 3 she put down and is a lot more expensive.
We are desperately trying to find any fb page to do with vet med or accomodation so she can hopefully swop with someone who may want to change.
Can you point us in the right direction please.

Gordonsgrin · 17/08/2020 17:32

@Bati this is the one she also has her name engraved, seems the thing to do. As I said she said mostly vets don’t bother getting their own till 3rd year but that may just be at Bristol.
