Vet Medicine 2020

Hi a new thread with DC applying to Vet Med next year or for anyone with DC already studying who could pass on some words of wisdom!

My DD is looking to apply to Cambridge, Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol.
She has a fair amount of work experience arranged already and we will do the open day circuit next year.

DD no nearer a decision. And slightly worried about 11 weeks to exams (probably). I'm busy learning how to teach on line - just in case. Have warned my students I may still be in my pjs 😂😂

3catsandadog · 13/03/2020 09:38

Sorry to hear about the rejections from Bristol. I think DD would have probably had one if she hadn't withdrawn as she submitted UCAS very early on and heard nothing back.
It is strange here as they do not interview. Your DC are strong applicants to have 3 other others which would imply they would likely have got a place if they interviewed, so very good candidates are being missed with this process.

Thanks 3cats. I wanted dd to withdraw as she was always going to firm Nottingham, but I think she was just intrigued to see if she would get an offer. It sounds like sour grapes but I seriously question Bristol’s methods. DD found the questionnaire odd as it was very limited in its questions and not a very thorough process. She enjoyed all her interviews and in the case of Surrey and Nottingham they had much more complex pre-interview questions too. Dd wasn’t upset by the rejection, she went straight onto UCAS and firmed which was lovely! What has everyone else decided?

3catsandadog · 13/03/2020 10:07

My DD also really enjoyed the interviews she had and also found it odd that there was no SJT questions like the other two you mentioned. In hindsight she said she probably wouldn't have applied to Bristol as if they can interview doctors/dentists why not the vets?

I think the decision not to interview strange as thought the iv for the other three gave a good test of what they should be looking for. Also shocked to see Kirstie and Phil on LLL this week with a budget of 500k!! For a two bed flat in Clifton so probably a good thing

Mum7400 · 13/03/2020 17:32

Off to surrey on Wednesday for offer day

mumsneedwine · 13/03/2020 19:17

Nottingham only doing on line lectures after next week. So basically closing 2 weeks early.

handmedownqueen · 14/03/2020 09:08

DD has firmed Liverpool and insured HK so there is a Surrey offer hopefully they will make - her other friend who is applying unfortunately has 3 rejections poor girl x

mumsneedwine · 17/03/2020 17:43

Hope everyone is ok. So hard for the kids to get focussed with so much uncertainty. DD now has no maths teachers as all self isolating and they have 3 topics still to do. No clue what will happen now. Feel very sad for them. Eldest DD coming home from Notts tomorrow as they are now all on line. All placements and EMS suspended.
I feel like I'm in a horror movie.

3catsandadog · 17/03/2020 17:50

Yes me too :( Can't even see A'levels happening this year. My son came home yesterday from Year 2.

What a sad turn of events. I am struggling to keep dd upbeat. She is so worried about not being able to see her friends - they rely on each other so much at that age. Hope everyone stays healthy x

Mum7400 · 17/03/2020 19:10

It's a horrible time, such a shame they have not finished the courses before being off, fingers crossed that there is a solution soon. Keep safe all xx

mumsneedwine · 17/03/2020 19:11

As a teacher keeping healthy is looking less and less likely every day. I'm exhausted doing my job and covering for self isolating collegues. Can't even go to the pub now 🥴

mumsneedwine · 21/03/2020 09:17

Hope everyone made it through their last day without too many tears. I cried like a baby saying goodbye to my exam years.
We have been looking for on line courses for our students and I've found a few vet relevant ones if anyone is interested. I also thought that studying accountancy or business might be helpful for the future. Because there will be a future. And it will be good.
Stay safe and happy. DD off to Waitrose to work later - she finds it funny she is a key worker now.

Mum7400 · 21/03/2020 09:40

Mumsneedwine if you can share details on the courses that would be great thank you

mumsneedwine · 21/03/2020 09:48

I'll collate all the ones I've found so far and out here a bit later.

Scottandcharlene · 21/03/2020 10:01

That’s great mumsneedwine, thank you. What an emotional few days. X

shockthemonkey · 23/03/2020 14:06

I'm also very interested, @mumsneedwine

Very tough those goodbyes Sad

Thanks in advance for doing this...

mumsneedwine · 23/03/2020 14:09

Really sorry, been totally caught up in trying to organise this on line teaching stuff. I'll get some stuff up tonight. Off to try and teach organic chemistry via Teams - I will get better at it !!!

mumsneedwine · 24/03/2020 10:45

Sorry. Madness trying to teach 7 year groups from home. We are still going with 11 and 13, because why not ! I've not looked into any of these in depth so please tell me if they are rubbish.

I am now teaching via Teams and Zoom. But I'm running out of silly hats to wear. Trying to keep the kids smiling. And myself.

Thank you Mumsneedwine, my dd is having online lessons this week so still has work to do. They haven’t quite finished the chemistry syllabus or mechanics, but will have by Friday. I hope everyone is coping alright, the sunshine certainly helps.

shockthemonkey · 24/03/2020 17:49

Thanks to you too, 3cats

Bati · 31/03/2020 14:39
