Hi a new thread with DC applying to Vet Med next year or for anyone with DC already studying who could pass on some words of wisdom!

My DD is looking to apply to Cambridge, Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol.
She has a fair amount of work experience arranged already and we will do the open day circuit next year.

Mumsneedwine we have our Bristol offer day booked for 7th March. I think my DS will love Bristol also.

3catsandadog · 09/02/2020 09:35

Glad you enjoyed your offer day mumsneedwine.

I think the email for admissions at Notts Bati is [email protected]

You beat me to it 3cats! Bristol offer day sounds great mumsneedwine.

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2020 11:01

Our email from Notts arrived before the offer - no phone call just on track. Now that threw DD !!! Bristol was good and can see her there. But RVC visit next to compare. Feels Liverpool and Bristol are so similar and B is much nearer to home. But who knows. I'm still a bit stunned she is even in a position to choose.
Good luck to everyone waiting and enjoy the offer days. Its sooo nice to be sitting somewhere that wants your kid.

Bati · 09/02/2020 11:36

mumsneedwine dd loves RVC but after considering approx £12000 a year rent for the first 2 years while in camden before actually living expenses and just how far away it is from home she has declined their offer.
Dd got a phone call from Nottingham and updated on UCAS but hasn't heard anything since. Her offer is for the April start so we are not sure what happens over accommodation or if any will be available on the campus for the April starters.
If they still get accommodation on the campus will all april starters be put together in a flat or in flats where people have already been there for 6 months.

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2020 11:45

It's strange Bati but I'm sure Notts have a plan. Offer day would be really helpful for info - they must have accommodation for them all. Maybe they have built some more ?
Do agree RVC is stupid expensive, but we went to London a few weeks ago and went to the hall she'll probably get and it's in a trendy area so feels like not in London. And can live at Hawkshead for 3 years if want which might be a possibility.
Who knows. I was pretty taken with Bristol and the course and would be happy with her there. But I'm keeping quiet so it's totally her decision.

handmedownqueen · 13/02/2020 22:28

HK selection day today - all interviews done now just waiting to see what Bristol says
HK vet school under construction but some way from being finished it seems!
Has everyone else’s DC heard back from all their unis now?

mumsneedwine · 14/02/2020 16:35

We are all done. RVC day on Weds and then the wait for her to decide. This could take a while. Good luck everyone still waiting - things should all be clearer by end of March.

handmedownqueen · 19/02/2020 21:42

HK offer. DD v lucky and I’m really proud of her

Mum7400 · 19/02/2020 22:58

Fantastic news on HK well done to your dd

Mum7400 · 19/02/2020 23:00

Going to offer day in Bristol on the 7 march and Surrey offer day on 18th March. Is anyone else going?

mumsneedwine · 20/02/2020 08:47

Great new on HK offer !

We were at RVC yesterday and wow it's impressive. I'd be very happy to be a patient at their massive hospital as a human let alone a dog. Teaching seems amazing and everyone so friendly. But it's expensive for first 2 years. DD now completely stuck as what she likes about Bristol is different to what she likes about RVC. Liverpool still in the mix too.

Good luck to everyone with choices to make . It's a lovely position but it's not easy for them !!

Scottandcharlene · 20/02/2020 09:47

Great to hear offers still coming in. We still haven’t heard from Bristol, but dd is currently in New York on a school trip (lucky thing). She will just be back in time for the Nottingham offer day on Saturday.

3catsandadog · 21/02/2020 14:15

Have a good offer day at Notts. We are not going as DD has insured them already but we really enjoyed the open day in the lovely sun :)

DD not going to Notts (which is a shame as I was hoping to pop in and see big DD). Is anyone going to Liverpool - if you could let us know if there is anything new that would be great. DD can't get another day off work to go and I'd feel a bit stupid on my own .

Scottandcharlene · 22/02/2020 14:50

Back from Nottingham. It was a great morning (with a free lunch thrown in Smile). They were very honest about the potential problems with the April cohort, so I should think those with April offers felt reassured. DD still has Nottingham as first choice but is going to Liverpool next week, although she might go on her own to that one. Still waiting for Bristol........

mumsneedwine · 22/02/2020 15:10

Sounds like it was really positive. Eldest DD loves Nottingham as a student and I think the vet school is lovely. DD being picky and wants all the big hospitals on site !! Good luck to everyone making decisions. It's been a long road to here and DD now finding it all a bit real - got offered her first EMS placement at the vets the other day when we took our pup in to be 'done'.

Scottandcharlene · 22/02/2020 15:30

One advantage of the April cohort is they are expanding in all sorts of areas, including an involvement with a new PDSA hospital in Nottingham. That’s good news about the EMS offer. It certainly feels very real now. I could really see my dd as a student, and it’s odd to think the next time we go will hopefully be on moving in day! All the other offer holders seem lovely. I’m sure all vet schools are the same in that the students have a lot in common due to the dedication it takes to even apply!

mumsneedwine · 22/02/2020 15:41

I so agree. They are going to be happy wherever they end up. At the end of the day the courses are pretty similar - so far everywhere has shown us photos of lambs and students with their arms up cows bottoms 😂. DD is excited and terrified in equal amounts.

Mum7400 · 07/03/2020 06:25

Off to Bristol offer day this morning

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2020 07:44

Have fun. I could just sit in the Great Hall all day if they'd let me.

AWanderingMinstrel · 11/03/2020 11:41

Saw upthread that someone was worried about Surrey accreditation. "The University of Surrey is delighted to announce that its innovative Veterinary Medicine and Science degree has received official accreditation from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Council. Accreditation enables veterinary students at Surrey to register with RCVS and practise in the United Kingdom.4 Oct 2019". This means that it is now accredited in the same way as all other Vet schools in the UK..

Mum7400 · 11/03/2020 13:46

Fantastic news about Surrey, we are going for the open day next Wednesday there. Then he needs to decide

handmedownqueen · 12/03/2020 14:33

final decision in - rejection from Bristol but three offers Liverpool Surrey HK- now she needs to F and I asap so hopefully someone else can get a offer too

Scottandcharlene · 12/03/2020 19:41

Same here handmedownqueen, dd has just had the email from Bristol and has withdrawn as she didn’t want any other course. She has just firmed Nottingham and insured Surrey. She was going to put Liverpool as insurance but decided it made more sense to put Surrey as they would be more likely to accept lower grades. So pleased to finally firm Notts. The stress of exams is really mounting now, I think she is ready to leave school behind. Strange times for us all, hope everyone is ok.
