Hi a new thread with DC applying to Vet Med next year or for anyone with DC already studying who could pass on some words of wisdom!

My DD is looking to apply to Cambridge, Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol.
She has a fair amount of work experience arranged already and we will do the open day circuit next year.

Hi Bati she has 99 percent decided but just waiting her last uni to reply!

Mine is so not decided !!! Bet she presses the button on the last possible day. Where has DD chosen ? Helps people waiting as those Unis can start giving wait list offers hopefully.

mumsneedwine · 05/02/2020 16:40

Hi. Is anyone going to Bristol on Saturday ? I will be in the parents lounge if anyone fancies a cuppa.

handmedownqueen · 05/02/2020 16:59

is it an offer holders day? as there don't seem to be many offers!

mumsneedwine · 05/02/2020 17:17

They do seem to be taking there time ! Yes it's offer holders day so hope it helps her make a decision. Have RVC one on 19th. Not doing any others as she seems to have narrowed it down now.

Scottandcharlene · 06/02/2020 17:01

Still waiting to hear from Bristol but DD will choose Nottingham I think. She will end up having an insurance choice with a higher offer than her firm. I was suggesting she gave it some serious thought as to which uni would be most likely to accept her if she doesn’t get the grades, and she thinks that would be Nottingham anyway. It will mean her insurance choice will mean nothing I think but she will wait to hear from Bristol before accepting. Our dogs have both had the horrible sickness bug that is going round and Liverpool University are doing a survey of pet owners to find out more about it, which I will get dd to fill in! Hope everyone is ok, I can’t believe it’s nearly half-term already Smile

mumsneedwine · 06/02/2020 17:12

My elder DD loves Nottingham as a student city. It has so much going on and is cheap. Yours will be joining mine on medics rounds - a pub crawl with all medics, vets, nurses, physios etc. Seems fun !

Scottandcharlene · 06/02/2020 17:24

That sounds like a fun evening!

3catsandadog · 07/02/2020 08:22

DD has just withdrawn Bristol as very happy with Cambridge firm and Nottingham insurance.
Will free up a Bristol space and tired of waiting!

Good to have made a decision cats. Mine is no where near !!! Think half term might be sitting down and making lists of why and why not.

Mum7400 · 08/02/2020 02:33

Ok so we have heard from all universities 2 rejections and 2 offers, now to decide between Bristol and Surrey. Anybody have any tips on deciding? Offer day for Bristol is in March.

mumsneedwine · 08/02/2020 07:48

Can recommend the Mendip Golf Club as a place to stay for Bristol offer days (or subsequent visits to Langford 😊). It's 8 minutes away and really comfy with good food. We are leaving shortly to start the day at 9am with a bus into Bristol - afternoon is back at Langford. DD going to focus on accommodation (halls and houses) and course details, such as help with EMS (unless any of you want her - afraid I can only offer a small garden and a hyper rescue dog).

Scottandcharlene · 08/02/2020 08:10

Good news 3cats, it must be lovely to firm things. In a way I wish my dd would do the same but I think she would put Bristol as insurance if she got an offer so is hanging on. Mum7400 - I think Surrey and Bristol are very different experiences. My dd preferred Bristol because she liked the idea of living in a lovely city for 3 years. Surrey is obviously a much newer course but as the first cohort have only just graduated it doesn’t yet have the reputation that Nottingham has. Dd always had Surrey as 4th choice but largely due to distance from home. My niece went to Bristol to uni and loved the city so much she now lives there, but I guess it’s very much a personal choice. Hope you have a good day mumsneedwine. It will interesting to hear how the offer days differ from the open day.

Scottandcharlene · 08/02/2020 08:16

Guildford is a lovely city too but Bristol much larger and a very good student experience (in dd’s opinion) Blush

Mum7400 · 08/02/2020 10:22

Thank you all .
To have both offers have been amazing and we loved both places. we also need to look at cost of living in both places over the entire duration too. I am thinking Surrey will be a lot more expensive being that much closer to london.
I think the courses will be different too. I think whichever they decide they will love.

Enjoy your day today mums need wine, we nearly went today but we just missed the last places , it would have been good to meet.

Wolfff · 08/02/2020 10:24

@Mum7400

My DD is at Surrey and loves it. Chose it over Edinburgh, RVC and Liverpool. While some aspects of the course have not been a bit lacking, there has been a great deal of efforts to support students. Not least among the students themselves.

She just preferred the atmosphere at Surrey over anywhere else.

Wolfff · 08/02/2020 10:26

Sorry meant to say some of the teaching has been iffy.

Guildford is quite expensive. However it is smaller than Bristol and well connected.

Wolfff · 08/02/2020 10:31

The degree at Surrey is also not accredited in the US which would have been important to DD (she has an American boyfriend).

The other disadvantage (or not) is that there is no vet clinic or farm actually at the University so they have to go to different places.

While saying all that. The advantages of being in a good and support environment have been great for DD.

Scottandcharlene · 08/02/2020 10:59

That’s a really good point about student support Wolff. It looks like the newer courses work really hard to do this, which is a massive positive. As has been said many times, I’m sure they will love it wherever they end up.

Mum7400 · 08/02/2020 11:17

Some great points thank you for sharing wolff

handmedownqueen · 08/02/2020 11:33

anyone at HK interview on 13th Feb? still no news from Bristol - are most people still waiting? mocks went well here so fingers crossed for the summer!

Bati · 08/02/2020 16:24

Great news 3cats on your dd decisions.

mum7400 another thing for your dd to consider, would she prefer campus or city -surrey is a campus university where Bristol is a city.

Anyone know anything about the Nottingham offers day - Dd has not received an email about it and really wants to go and we are sure you have to book on it and we think its next weekend x

Scottandcharlene · 08/02/2020 16:39

Dd is going to Notts offer holder day on 22nd Bati. She had an email and booked straight away. There was a choice of morning or afternoon. I have a feeling there has been problems with missing emails according to TSR, so it’s probably best to phone or email to check.

mumsneedwine · 08/02/2020 20:08

Home from Bristol. Was v impressed, especially with their pastoral care, and making sure students have a good work/life balance. And help with getting EMS. Was lovely sunny day and the City looked great. DD so confused 🤷‍♀️

Bati · 08/02/2020 20:58

scottandchatlene She emailed them the other day but she thinks she emailed the wrong email - Any ideas on the actual email to use.
mumsneedwine glad you and your dd had a good day, hopefully when your dd goes to other offer days it will help her decide x
