I too wanted to say well done for handling the drop offs like troopers. A word of warning - DD has been really upset over the weekend, she says that she has only just realised, two weeks in, that she is not on holiday and will not be living at home. She was quite upset, after being happy and (I thought) settled. So, prepare yourselves, this might happen to your DC too. I'm going to pick her up and bring her home next weekend. Lots of the more local students are going home, after an exhausting freshers. I don't want to molly coddle her and I know that she has to settle, but I think a bit of "Mommy" love, before she starts the course in earnest, is what she needs. Gosh, this is all so difficult. Best of luck to you and your DC.

swingofthings · 17/09/2018 17:32

DD took the BMAT in September. I think she found it easier to do it soon afterwards as her brain was still in active mode. It helps knowing the results before to consider excluding a BMAT uni if results are bad but otherwise it's not that helpful as averages and cut offs can be different enough one year on to not really be able to gage the likelihood of an interview.

Oneteen · 17/09/2018 17:48

Thank you swing and proud. We had a meal after attending Imperial and DD decided to have a go at some of the sample tests (UKCAT), she found the Situational Judgement tests interesting!

Hope all your DC's settle quickly ..FlowersWine for all the mums

specialted · 17/09/2018 19:40

Mommymoomitzi hope dd is ok. Am sure she'll enjoy a bit of tlc at home. My dd always gets teary when she is very tired too

Waitingforsherlock · 17/09/2018 21:06

Hope your dd feels better @mummymoomitzi. I imagine the honeymoon period has worn off now. The prospect of working so hard for the next five years is probably rather daunting too. Poor thing, hope a bit of tlc will work wonders

Movingmountains · 18/09/2018 21:57

Mommymoomitzi hope your DD is ok. As you say reality sets in! DS seems to have settled well - says he has made good group of medic friends and enjoyed his first lecture. Tonight he has made his way across city to see the Arctic Monkeys - seems a lifetime ago we brought the ticket worrying he wouldn’t get in!

specialted · 18/09/2018 22:17

Movingmountains dd has also gone tonight, remember buying tickets wondering if she'd still be at home then! All worked out very well in the end!

SomersetS · 19/09/2018 15:42

Hello Everyone! Sorry for radio silence - no excuse really except been a bit glum here but now pretty much recovered from illness, coming out of the doldrums and getting excited. Thank you all for your good wishes & thoughts.
Lovely to hear everyone moving in & their tales. Such an exciting time & is bringing back many happy memories of my younger days.
DD nearly packed (well there are piles all over the house & her booze stash is filling up nicely) & moving in on Saturday. We have confirmed off to Leicester to do the "alternative" medical science course & hoping DD loves it & settles into it well. She is still hoping to transfer to A100 Medicine next September but will see how she feels after a few terms. This thread & your support has been invaluable this year & I intend to continue to keep an eye on it over the next year.

To 2019 Applicants, despite coming crashing down in August by not making the grades on results day, DD, from a bog-standard comprehensive school with no clue about how to help Medicine Applicants, did get 4 offers so I am happy to assist if possible. I am hugely proud of her for that and know that she, like your DCs and the DCs in our 3 threads this year, will make a fantastic doctor or whatever they now choose to do.

Play to your strengths and apply to those you like where you think DC can get an interview. After that it's down to their suitability in the opinion of the interviewers. Good luck. This is not an easy ride!

booface · 19/09/2018 16:46

Lovely to have you back on board SomersetS and to hear the news about your DD. Good luck for your Saturday move in date! Specialted I hope your DD had a good first night (and that you were ok too!) Mommymoomitzi, I do hope your DD feeling better, it is so up and down these first few weeks.

Hoping DH and second DS and I might get invited to visit my DS in Edinburgh over half term, but he is already making noises about his friends coming up for his birthday which is that week... oh dear, I know my place in the pecking order! But maybe the offer of a trip up to Loch Lomond or a whiskey tasting or something might get us an invite!

Ooh sorry booface, meant dd was also going to arctic monkeys! She goes to Nottingham on sat. Thanks for good wishes though 😘
Somerset, lovely to hear from you and that dd is looking forward to Leicester

adrinkofwater · 20/09/2018 13:27

Hi Somerset! Glad your DD is feeling better.

Hope all goes well for everyone moving in. We are taking DD to Cardiff tomorrow. 2 of her flat mates moved in yesterday and video called her last night, which was nice.

Movingmountains · 20/09/2018 21:37

Good luck to everyone taking their DC this weekend. I actually feel really calm for first time - DS is ‘there’ and he is loving life as a medic. It is very strange without him but I feel so happy for him. Luckily he is very chatty unlike DS1 so we are getting lots of info and stories

innertiger · 21/09/2018 16:14

Oneteen my DS is off to Imperial next weekend, let me know if there is anything specific you want to know and I'll try and help/find out etc.
DS did the BMAT early. He felt that there was no point applying to BMAT universities if the score wasn't high enough and didn't find it too bad to manage the workload as he'd got an early date on his UKCAT.
I think the most important thing for him when working out where to apply, certainly as a starting point, was the teaching method used as he knew some would not be right for him and how her prefers to learn etc,

specialted · 21/09/2018 18:30

Adrink how was Cardiff drop off?
Car packed ready for nottingham tomorrow. Dd requested home made pizza and Ice cream for tea tonight . Katisha and mumsneedwine are you ready??

Oneteen · 21/09/2018 18:32

Thanks innertiger

I am almost certain DD will adopt the same approach and take BMAT early too... for the moment I think she's just going to get her head down and work on getting those predicted grades (Its nice to see her so engaged in her 6th form subjects (all sciences) having been a coaster through most of the GCSE years.

mumsneedwine · 21/09/2018 18:39

We are ready !! Just hope she has a big room as she's taking the house. They got their years timetable today which was exciting to see. And her mentor seems quite famous 😳. We are off out for dinner and I'm trying not to think about it. My dad has been v v ill which has been awful but I've not had to think about it. But boy has it made me appreciate the wonders of the NHS and it's staff.

Might see you tomorrow Notts ladies x

SomersetS · 21/09/2018 23:11

Leicester on the morning. Booze celebratory evening with DD & her friend & family, off to Reading too. Exciting times for young people.

SomersetS · 21/09/2018 23:12

Boozy celebratory. Fgs.

Movingmountains · 22/09/2018 07:48

SomersetS and Mumsneedwine and all other Mums dropping off today - sending you good thoughts. Hope your Dad is getting better Mumsneedwine. All the best to all your DC x

mumsneedwine · 22/09/2018 08:09

Thanks Moving. Have just had half hour of fun packing the car and DD and I were in tears laughing as she has so much stuff it's ridiculous. Sister couldn't come even if didn't have work as she won't fit !

Tissues ready for journey home.

adrinkofwater · 22/09/2018 08:14

Hope drop off goes well for everyone today!

Taking DD went well. Stopped for lunch on the way. She registered with a gp when she got her key, so that's done! 2 of her flat mates helped carry stuff in, while I made the bed! No stress to have to move the car. DH and I left her to unpack a bit and did a bit of a food shop. Now feel I should have bought more but was worried about space! Had a wander round the halls of residence campus together and then left her as she wanted to finish unpacking without us around.

The 2 girls we met, seem nice. One a medic and the other doing psychology. The 2 boys had dropped off stuff and gone back homeHmm. Final girl arrives today.

DD seemed happy. Her room is fine, but quite warm and the kitchen is boiling - a decent size, but no sofa, just a table and 6 chairs. Normal cooker- not induction like in the pictures- so she could have had my old pans rather than the new induction ones we bought!

They have to be at the medicine campus at 8:15 on Monday morning, then the evening is "medic initiation" in their medic families Hmm. Quite a full on week!

Mommymoomitzi · 22/09/2018 16:09

SomersetS - hope all goes well. Wanted to tell you that DD has s new best friend, she did 1 year biomed and transferred to A100 - the top 2% of the year are given the option to transfer. Now this girl does not have the best of A levels, she just did it by working hard. She told tutors at the beginning that she wanted to transfer and asked for help and guidance. DD back this weekend. She had a bath (only showers in halls) clean PJ’s and a dinner of Vegetables (first for 2 weeks) she slept for 18 hours!!!! Freshers has taken its toll, but she’s looking forward to going back and starting the course, in earnest. Hope all DC are settling in well.

pixelchick10 · 22/09/2018 16:15

Adrink glad to hear your daughter is settling in well. Which hall at Cardiff is she at? Medic initiation well my daughter will see this from the other side as she’s a medic mum!

specialted · 22/09/2018 16:25

Glad dd had a nice weekend at home mommymoomitzi.
Just back from dropping dd at Nottingham. Pouring with rain! She has a great room on the ground floor so thankfully no lugging boxes up stairs. Her corridor was v quiet when we left but she wanted us to leave her to unpack. House feels v empty without her.

mumsneedwine · 22/09/2018 16:33

Just leaving a very nervous DD. Met her bathroom buddy who is lovely and also another medic on her corridor (next door but one). Few other people popped in to say hi. But she looks so scared so we just hugged and left. Fingers crossed
