@specialted mine has been in the AMU and it’s been an experience for her! Laughed at your account of life on the frontline as a medic for your DD - good for her! Sounds like she’s well prepared for next year and whatever it brings!

@trader21c yes dd has a massive teaching hospital for t&o and a&e next year! Will be very different although she's had her fair share of experiences so far. Today a patient tipped their full vomit bowl over the reg and tried to throw his catheter at dd! Pt just out of prison!

And @adrinkofwater I remember you from last year - glad your DD is staying with Wales - mine says under the new system she’d have put Wales down as she knows it so well @specialted my DD has done the opposite F1 for the busy teaching hospital and a smaller one for F2

@Tennismum19 what a nightmare for you all - last year under the old system DD found it an ordeal but sounds so much worse now …@baytreemum at least she got the safe back-up but how awful for all of them @specialted good luck to your daughter mine did her medical degree in Cardiff but now is an F1 at St George’s in South London it’s been quite a year!

So sorry for your daughter @Tennismum19 . It seems it has been a disaster!

@specialted I think ranking within the deanery varies between deaneries. For Wales they first have to rank health boards. They will be told which health board they have on 18th march, then rank jobs within their health board. So DD realises she could end up in north Wales, but only looked at jobs up to now in 3 south Wales deaneries. An extra complication for her is that she's on elective now and on 15th March flies somewhere with no internet. She has a friend back home who will do the job rankings for her, but as she won't know what deanery she's in before she flies she has to do rankings for all deaneries to send to her friend in advance!

Sorry just caught up on all the updates, happy for all those that got deaneries of choice, and sorry for those that didn't

My DD wanted to stay in London but no chance of that! She got her 2nd choice which is back home in a previously very unpopular deanery which was a safe back-up plan and one we’re glad of now because many of her friends have been sent to places at 6th, 12th and bottom choice - some are wondering if it’s worth staying in the UK. Even friends who got decent deaneries are worried sick because they now have to go back into the bag to see which sub-deanery they get allocated to. No one knows their rank, so no one knows which jobs or hospitals they have a chance of getting and no one knows anything about the regions to which they have been allocated let alone about the hospitals, and these are all kids in the top deciles at a top medical school. Everyone is upset and let-down and they have finals starting on Tuesday. It’s awful.

@adrinkofwater glad dd got the deanery of her choice! Dd said she's heard from friends that quite a few were disappointed. How does it work with ranking within the deanery?
Dd still seems happy , can't believe they're over halfway through f1! She moves to colorectal surgery at a different hospital next. She'll really miss the small dgh she's been at since August, it's been very nurturing and friendly. Hope everyone is getting on ok

My son’s cohort are in the middle of their final exams when they heard which Deanery they were allocated. Which just adds to the stress of everything, especially when you have been allocated a Deanery you had listed as 18/19 on your list of choices.
My son has a military bursary, so was fortunate to know a few months ago where he would be doing his foundation years. His long term girlfriend, fortunately, has been allocated, a neighbouring deanery, the North Midlands deanery. Other friends have not been so lucky. With some now working several hundred miles away from home, girlfriends/boyfriends and close friends. At a very stressful time of their lives.

@Tennismum19 it's such a mess. At least with the EPM and SJT you could guess where you might not get in and apply to others. This system is nuts.
If some have not got first choice and others have as 2nd then UKFPO have given incorrect information about how the algorithm works. Hope DD has contacted the BMA as I expect they'll be working on it.

My DD loves her hospital. Knew no one but has made a fantastic life for herself, made great friends and hospital is supportive. It's not a popular deanery (well it wasn't but seems to have become one). Suppose what I'm trying to say is sometimes a new place can be ok. Although it was DDs first choice so she did want to be there.

My daughter got her 12th choice - somewhere she has no want to go , hours and hours away from home! and because she obviously had a lower random ranking - Apparantly they keep the same ranking in the deaneries for the jobs - so you can end up in a deanery you don’t want with the job rotations you don’t want either - shocking !! Also Apparantly the numbers don’t add up and people have been allocated kss as their second and even 4th choice before those who ranked it as their first choice - so there is a flaw in the system , as eveyone was supposed to go through once - which would mean you would get a first choice over someone getting it as their 2nd , 3rd choice !

Hi all!! Congratulations to your DD @adrinkofwater !!!
My DD also got her first choice - West Midlands Central, which is very over subscribed (strangely LOL!) She must have had a good "randomly computer generated number". Now looking at rotations, to decide how to rank hospital choices.
Horror stories on the group chat for the nationwide med students, one girl who wanted South West got Northern Ireland, no appeal and no swapping allowed. Apparently 70 something per cent got first choice, which is the same as last year, so why they have bothered to bring in this last minute change and created so much unhappiness is anyone's guess. My DD is so upset for others who have got 19th, 20th choice, who were in top decile and previously would have almost certainly go their first choice. Many upset students and I understand why.
Hope you are all well. @adrinkofwater when is your graduation? x

Thinking of everyone in here who's DC found out their deaneries yesterday. It sounds like it was a big mess!

DD was lucky that she wants an unpopular deanery (Wales) so got her first choice, but wasn't expecting to now have to rank health boards! Several are commutable from Cardiff, so she was more keen to pick suitable rotations than healthboards! She's also away on elective, with very dodgy internet, which doesn't help!

Hope all your DC are ok! And also that the already F1s are doing well!

@mumsneedwine @specialted yes graduation was a hit hectic and a lot of queueing then we were whisked off for a large group dinner. I was hoping for a reprise of Grease songs but no...DS has stayed in Nottingham so pretty much no change for us.

@specialted I've hardly heard from DD (which usually means she's too busy to speak to her old mum). I'm desperate to hear more !!
@Katisha sorry we missed you at graduation, was all a bit hectic. Photos arrived today (v similar to last years ones 😂).

Think the new allocation is basically rank deaneries and computer allocated everyone a random number. Higher numbers get chosen first. It will be interesting to see how it works as I think lots more will apply for the popular places so could be a bit of a mess. I know lots of younger years are not happy as it takes away the bonus of working hard (or being better at exams). Don't think anyone will miss the SJT.

@Tennismum19 Bristol a fab city! Congrats to dd passing her finals. So I still don't understand how the new allocation works? I understand why but not how!
@Katisha good to hear from you, hope ds is doing ok. Dd not mentioned cake but there was a ward buffet for the outgoing f1 which she said was a nice touch .
Will be interested to hear how today went.. no consultant and new registrars rotating too. (Don't think they're called registrars any more!)

@Tennismum19 hello again 😊. So glad things are going well. Bristol is a fab city (youngest is there doing vet med - has just got back from doing some EMS in S Africa).
DD finally got home after 9pm (was due to finish at 5). Back again at 8am. They do not earn enough.

You might not remember me but my DD resat her A-levels and went a year later to Bristol which has been a brilliant uni for medicine, she has currently just ended her fourth year and passed her finals ( HOORAY) which they do in fourth year and she will now be off to South Africa to do her elective in paediatrics in September and then back to Bristol for her final year and then will be a part of the new deanery allocation… the best thing she ever did was to resit .. good look to everyone starting their f1 🙂

Good luck to all those starting tomorrow! Dd has had a good few days of induction but feeling abit overwhelmed with how much admin stuff like referral and blood forms there is to remember. I'm sure she'll get used to it soon. They have a night out on Friday for all the f1s in the region which should be good. If she can stay awake!
