Welcome to the new thread! Can't believe we are on the 4th already

Mums need wine - be brave - they are all feeling the same. You’re in for a funny few days/weeks - you just have to let her guide you ( and install find a friend on your phone! That keeps me happy) Going home will be odd/sad - we’re all in this together Flowers

pixelchick10 · 22/09/2018 17:38

Also it will get better once Freshers week is done and dusted and they start their courses.

adrinkofwater · 22/09/2018 17:53

pixelchick DD is in Talybont North. Hope she finds her way to the hospital on Monday!

She has replied to my question that the bed was comfy and she is now planning on doing a batch cook! No further information given, but at least she seems ok! (As much as you can tell from FB messenger!)

Hopefully they will all settle quickly and we will stop wondering what they are doing every minuteGrin!

mumsneedwine · 22/09/2018 18:14

On a mad dash South as have to pick her sister up from work at 7.30 and think we are going to be late. Friend on stand by if M40 not behaving. They never tell you about these bits of parenting in ante natal classes.

SomersetS · 22/09/2018 18:27

DD safely dropped at Leicester. It really is a lovely student village. Fingers crossed DD settles into the "alternative course" & earns the chance to transfer next year if she really wants to. Thanks Mommymoomitz. Good to hear it does really happen.

pixelchick10 · 22/09/2018 18:35

Adrink Ah Taly North is great for medics DD is sharing with a couple of girls from there this year. And she was next door in Talygate (right by the McDonald’s). It’s an easy walk to Heath so no doubt a few of them will go together on Monday. Your DD sounds happy no news is good news!

sluj · 22/09/2018 18:43

Just dropping back to say well done to all your DC that made it to uni.

My DS is now back at UEA for year 3 but I remember the year 1 drop off so well.

Be kind to yourselves and accept that it's normal to be distracted and sad amongst all the pride and excitement. I felt quite bereaved to be honest.

It does get better and by year 3 you won't think twice about it. Just take your time and know that you are sad because you care and that makes your DC very lucky.

PS wine helps Wine

adrinkofwater · 22/09/2018 21:43

Feeling very proud of DD. She messaged to say she was going to batch cook. And then sent a picture of her plate of food! There was a different plate of food across the table in the kitchen, so they are obviously being social on the kitchen!Grin

Katisha · 23/09/2018 00:20

Left DS in his very small hall room in the pouring rain. This is awful isn't it. I don't think wine HAS helped actually...

biscuit2000 · 23/09/2018 07:36

Good to hear your dropping off stories Smile We were at a very wet Cardiff for most of yesterday as DD happy for us to get her room set up. Held it together until the car then cried my eyes out for the journey home! Meeting her 3 medic parents and siblings tomorrow and there's a medics event in the evening. had a text from her (5.53am) as just going to bed - been to a foam party at the students union!! This is not like her - I'm so pleased she's got stuck in. Long may it continue and hoping she'll have a window free to see her old mum soon Wink.

specialted · 23/09/2018 17:18

How's everyone doing today? Feeling sad clearing up dds room. Dd been in touch quite a bit, think she's met lots of people today. Think yesterday was a bit harder for her, bit overwhelming but she's looking forward to a freshers nightclub Do tonight. She may not feel quite so good at medics induction tomorrow morning at 9am!

mumsneedwine · 23/09/2018 19:02

Mine going to that too special ! Expect there will be a lot of hangovers 😁

Katisha · 23/09/2018 19:34

Mine isn't. He's felt a bit unwell - nerves I think. So he's having a quiet night with a few people instead.
It's v v v odd without him here. I hope I'll get over wondering what's he's doing every 5 mins soon

mumsneedwine · 23/09/2018 20:14

Quiet night in sounds more sensible ! My younger DD FaceTimed her big sister tonight and said she seemed so grown up. After one night away. I miss her.

specialted · 23/09/2018 20:31

Katisha I think quite a few are having a quiet night in according to dd. She is looking forward to meeting all the medics tomorrow. She has six medics on her corridor which she's happy about. At least they'll all have to get up together in the mornings!

Ooops sorry posted twice !

Movingmountains · 23/09/2018 20:39

Well one week on it does get easier - mainly as DS is loving uni life so much and appears to be throwing himself into everything! Oh and for all the Julian fans, DS has his first lecture with him tomorrow 🤗

booface · 23/09/2018 20:42

Well done to everyone who did drop offs this weekend. And good luck for next week to everyone. I face timed with DS in Edinburgh for the first time (he is notoriously non communicative!) but seemed keen enough to call me right back when I asked if he was around!

He has done his first full week of lectures, and then caught the inevitable freshers flu at the end of the week). He said it is busy and hard work (but bearing in mind he has had a summer of lolling around and really not doing much, anything would be hard!)

Katisha · 23/09/2018 20:53

Specialted 6 medics sounds good. I think DS has only one in close proximity but they've cased the route for tomorrow morning's 0830 start!

mumsneedwine · 23/09/2018 22:49

DD has one medic on corridor of 8 and one downstairs and another somewhere else (met last night over pink gin). Think their parents are meeting them at halls at 8.30 to walk them to Med school.

I've been spending a lot of time in hospitals recently with my dad and I love our creaky old NHS. Staff are all amazing and everything happens regardless of wealth.

swingofthings · 24/09/2018 08:30

Soi think that's all our medics at Uni now. Good luck to everyone starting the course today.

Week2 for DD and finally got an update yesterday. Everything going very well, everything very organised. DD doesn't have that many lecture, Manchester seems to encourage self study with support. Started PBL and say she really enjoys it despite her not being keen on Manchester as an option because of it. She's been paired with a graduate 1st year which she's happy with. They will do their first placement together in December.

She has one week off every month, for studying/revising but she'll come home for the first one next month which is an unexpected surprise as assumed we wouldn't see her again until December.

Getting along great with 7 flatmates. She's been going out and enjoying freshers week but reasonably and is happy not to go out as much as her flatmates.

She seems so immersed in it all and loving it. She sounded so adult, it was like talking to another child. Very nice though.

muddlethro · 24/09/2018 12:36

Swing...I’ve just realised that my DS might be joining your DD at Manchester in 2020! He’s just started his second year at St Andrews and he chose the English route for his 3 clinical years. He therefore has to decide whether to go to Barts or Manchester (he would enter year 3 in 2020, I think). His preference is currently Manchester so it’s great to hear your DD is enjoying it. I’d love to know how she finds living in Manchester so that I can tell my DS... 🤗

It’s lovely hearing that your DC are settling in to life as med students, not so good to hear that some are a bit ill, although I think it’s quite common in the first semester (term?)....! I sent a chocolate package with some Anadin Extra in, which went down well....I even got a WhatsApp picture of the empty wrappers...! Always looking for ways to keep him communicating...! 😝

shank2 · 24/09/2018 15:27

muddlethru - how has your son enjoyed St Andews- just looking at it as an option for applying this year?

muddlethro · 24/09/2018 16:42

Hi Shank2...my son is really enjoying St Andrews (it was his first choice). He loves the place itself, and is also very happy with the medical school. It is predominantly lecture based, with weekly clinical skills sessions, anatomy in the DR, and also some clinical placements. They have tutorial groups too, as well as individual slots with their academic advisor (not sure if that’s weekly ?). This teaching method suits my DS really well, but it’s not for everyone. Would your DS be applying to the English or Scottish route? He could also apply with no preference of course.... 🤔
