Welcome to the new thread! Can't believe we are on the 4th already

Congratulations to all those finishing and I hope that you have a great day celebrating graduation!
DD gets an extra graduation for her intercalated BSc next week. Very pleased for her that all her assignments and dissertation have been marked and she's got a first! She's really looking forward to having patients again, though and not annalysing any data!
Hope all you Nottingham medic parents get to meet up!

booface · 14/07/2023 14:40

Wow can’t believe some of yours are already graduated and ready to start their F1s. Hope the Graduations were fantastic. They really deserve a big celebration. My DS did intercalated so he’s got one more year in Edinburgh.

Currently working at Wimbledon to earn a bit of money. Hours in hospitality boxes are v long there, but good practice for long hospital hours I guess!

He’s hoping to go to Kenya for elective. As much due to the kite surfing on offer as the medical opportunities I think!

Best wishes to all yours as they start their careers!

I will def stay on this thread until everyone has finished! It's been such a lovely group and I want to see it through til they've all graduated!

specialted · 20/07/2023 20:13

Well me and @mumsneedwine finally got to meet up at the graduation and have a glass of champagne! Was so great to put a face to the name after six years!!! Graduation day was just lovely , so many happy smiling faces !

mumsneedwine · 20/07/2023 20:24

@specialted 🥰🥰 was such a lovely day. Wish we'd had longer to chat. Maybe I need to make a visit further north.
Good luck to everyone starting next week.

booface · 20/07/2023 21:01

That’s lovely to hear you met up. And so pleased the graduations went really well. One more year for us. Very best wishes to your two, and everyone else who starts their new careers!

Oh my goodness!! Hello girls 😍.
I’ve only just seen that the OP had updated this thread, and it’s so wonderful to read all your stories and how your DC’s are getting on.
Not sure if any of you remember me? My DD went to Plymouth and has had a fabulous time. She intercalated at Bath last year, studying urgent and emergency care. It was a brilliant course and she feels it will benefit her when she becomes an F1. Bath was a lovely place for her to spend a year and it was all very ”Bridgerton” and Roman - wonderful shopping, but eye wateringly expensive! So next year is her 6th year and she will go back to do her last year at Torbay Hospital. That should be nice to visit! I cannot believe where the time has gone! Was it really 2018 when we all went through the stress of our DC’s entering the world of medicine? I remember the stress we all went through, feeling it all together and how much it helped to have you or understanding that it was just as bad for us as parents as for our offspring LOL. I’m going to spend some time reading all your messages and catching up on how things are going with your families. DD is a bit fed up about the change in deanery allocation next year, as she has been in the top decile every year and feels she probably didn’t need to work as hard as she has, whilst others I’ve had more fun at university. I try and be pragmatic and tell her that study is never wasted. I’m sure things will work out for the best, life usually has a way of doing that. I remember all your names like it was yesterday, and I’m genuinely thrilled to find that this thread is still ongoing. Best regards to you all, it’s been a journey hasn’t it? 😘

Lovely to hear how all your DC getting on. Mine had her second graduation at Cardiff this week (intercalated in genomic medicine last year) this was the main medicine one. She will spend F1 at St George’s hospital in South London and next year at Epsom/st Helier. It brought a tear to my eye seeing all her friends of six years finally saying the Hippocratic oath and becoming doctors! What a tough road behind and ahead …

Glad that you enjoyed graduation a that @mumsneedwine and @specialted finally met! @trader21c we were also at that graduation on Monday as DD was graduating in her intercalated BSc. It was lovely to be there and see all the doctors graduating, including DDs friends who didn't intercalate!
Nice to hear from @Mommymoomitzi! I do remember you, back from interview threads! Did your DD leave something on the train on the way to her interview? Or Amy I getting muddled? I posted pictures of various outfits that DD might wear to interview for everyone's opinions 🤦‍♀️! I hope your DD enjoys her final year. Does she stay in Torbay for the whole time? DD has a hospital placement in Newport, then GP placement far away in West Wales before elective and then a final hospital placement. Not sure what DD thinks about the whole new deanery allocation thing. It does seem a bit weird to me...
Thinking of those new doctors starting on Monday 🥳

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2023 15:29

@Mommymoomitzi 2 of my DDs best friends will be F1s at Torbay. Maybe they'll all meet 😊

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2023 15:31

@trader21c ours didn't take the oath. Didn't think that was s thing anymore.
Graduation was v relaxed (including a forward role on the stage).

trader21c · 21/07/2023 15:42

I thought the oath was a good thing makes them think about the seriousness of what they are entering into … remembering that patients are at the centre of what they do and a duty on them to report any malpractice @drink it was fun wasn’t it - my daughter had the intercalation ceremony too last year so they effectively graduate twice!

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2023 16:21

@trader21c ours had 2 as well. Last year was their BMedSci graduation, delayed a year, so this week was round 2. Thankfully much less hot.
I must admit I had a little tear when they were addressed as Doctors.

trader21c · 21/07/2023 16:23

@mums me too! It was quite emotional seeing all her friends who she’s been studying alongside for 6 years finally getting to the end of things

Mommymoomitzi · 21/07/2023 18:50

@adrinkofwater I’m crying with laughter here!!! Yes, she left her interview suit on the train the night before the Plymouth interview and I (all unfit, menopausal mess of me) had to run to the station the next morning, whilst DD had a breakdown! I’d forgotten that but bless you for remembering! 🤣🤣
@mumsneedwine - that would be great fun! Of course, as she intercalated and is not at her “home” hospital (Derriford) she won’t really know anyone. Should she wear a red carnation and carry a copy of The Times? 🥰
Oh I have missed you all!
DD doing 4 weeks at our local hospital doing Dermatology, as part of her elective, then off to Nepal for 4 weeks. 2 weeks Dermatology, I week urgent and emergency and 1 week staying in a village, working at a remote nurse led clinic. Great experience, but I will be a wreck.
Dermatology is her chosen path.

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2023 18:51

@Mommymoomitzi I may know a new F1 at Derriford 🤓.

Mommymoomitzi · 21/07/2023 20:06

@mumsneedwine - sounds very cryptic. Plymouth has been a great city for DD, safe and beautiful. Derriford is the regional trauma centre, helicopter in and out for cases all over Devon and Cornwall, really interesting cases Let me know if you need any info..@adrinkofwater Yes, they all did 4 years at Derriford and 1 whole year at Torbay. That’s changed now as intake numbers have grown, but it will be 1 year for DD.

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2023 20:11

@Mommymoomitzi she might be my F1 😊😊. Quite a few from Notts heading to Peninsula. They've all missed the sea.
ED over the summer sounds horrific to me !!

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2023 20:13

@Mommymoomitzi and thank you. I've visited a few times now and just love Plymouth. If you hang out of DDs window you can see the sea.

Mommymoomitzi · 21/07/2023 20:34

@mumsneedwine wow! How fabulous! All I can say is that my DD has loved every minute. I have a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that your F1 will tread the corridors that my DD has 🥰 Its such a small world on this thread. DD will be around at The John Bull Centre (medical centre of Learning) up at Derriford, to do some final exams, so she’ll look for the best looking F1 and know it’s your DD! What rotation does she have first?

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2023 20:37

@Mommymoomitzi well her first week is as surgical on call. Which to me sounds totally nuts. She's pretty chilled about it all.
Hope she gets to meet your DD. When she's back at Derriford send me a pm. Another mumsnet child friendship 😊.

Mommymoomitzi · 21/07/2023 21:04

@mumsneedwine ❤️

specialted · 01/08/2023 18:18

Good luck to all those starting tomorrow! Dd has had a good few days of induction but feeling abit overwhelmed with how much admin stuff like referral and blood forms there is to remember. I'm sure she'll get used to it soon. They have a night out on Friday for all the f1s in the region which should be good. If she can stay awake!

mumsneedwine · 01/08/2023 19:14

🥰🥰 I hope they look after our girls. As long as everyone is kind.

adrinkofwater · 01/08/2023 19:49

Thinking of all those new F1s! I'm sure they will be tired but great!
