Hi. DD off to look at houses tomorrow with friends, in between Teddy Bear Medicine. I believe this involves 4 year olds learning basic first aid on their teddies. After over clubbing for a solid week think she's learned to pace herself better as she was shattered. Specialted they almost met at the weekend ! First exam passed and some kind of routine sorted. She's planning on visiting one friend in France and we are apparently hosting for Royal Ascot next year. Not been given numbers yet 😳

specialted · 06/11/2018 21:37

Mumsneedwine yes I think they actually know each other now! Funny to think that isn't it?!

adrinkofwater · 07/11/2018 07:50

Had a lovely time visiting DD the other week. She seems very settled, making friends and joining various societies. The gospel choir she joined was part of a performance for black history month. The clip she sent looked great fun, but she did seem shiney white!

She is enjoying the course, but still working out how to right up her notes! She said she's now trying writing them by hand as she thinks she remembers stuff better that way!

Lovely to hear all your news. Sounds as if things going well. Amazing that they are thinking about houses for next year already! But my DS did mention that when we went up.. He is coming home for the weekend, not this one coming but the next one. Very excited!! Pick up at airport pretty late Friday, but I would walk over broken glass to be there!

Really feeling the pain of the Mums on 2018 thread. Facebook memories informed me it was exactly one year today since dS got first interview at Bristol - crikey made me feel a bit emotional as so much has happened in that year and feel so relieved he is now studying medicine - almost have to pinch myself to believe he is doing it! Man that was a stressful year!

muddlethro · 09/11/2018 19:06

I just took a peek movingmountains. Brings those familiar stressy feelings back to the surface doesn't it! Poor them...!😩

specialted · 09/11/2018 19:48

I too had a peek, I felt nervous reading that thread!! Sooooo relieved we're not at that stage. It was a very very stressful year!

sluj · 09/11/2018 20:11

I'm still watching and I was on the 2016 thread!!!!

mumsneedwine · 09/11/2018 20:53

And Julian has namechecked mumsnet on tsr 😂. Wish everywhere was as open and helpful as Sheffield. Remember being so pleased when saw cut off last year as knew DD would get one interview. As it was it took an epic 7.5 hour journey through worst snow storm to get her there. And was her first offer. Will always have a soft spot for Sheffield and St Julian.

specialted · 09/11/2018 21:08

Yes and I remember dd having three Interviews in a week just before Christmas , it was exhausting. But we were so grateful she had interviews!

Movingmountains · 09/11/2018 22:23

DS says he does the best lectures as well!

Katisha · 09/11/2018 23:52

I still feel somewhat none the wiser as to DS actually got in! I'm still confused by all the stats and grades and cut-offs and tactical application strategies. Now I'm having to mug up on student housing which seems almost as competitive!

swingofthings · 11/11/2018 07:19

Lovely to hear that everyone is settled and enjoying the course. DD has a week reading every month and comes back but it is taking its toll and I think this will reduce next year. She still has to do an online test at home during her reading week, so not a holiday!

It's lovely to hear though that she now feels that Manchester is her home. She loves everything about the course and says Manchester are very organised and structure although the course is heavily based on self learning.

She too has started to look for next year accommodation. She was considering moving with her current flatmates but in the end decided to share with fellow Medicine students as she does find it easier to share with like minded people although she gets along great with her current ones. She has decided to intercalate after year 3 and do a Master. Seems very early to decide but she does speak like she's been a medical student for years already rather than months, it's quite odd how much she sounds 5 years older than 2 months ago!

innertiger · 14/11/2018 16:39

Great to hear everyone's news and to know that they're all settling into their new lives!

My DS is not far from home so he has been back a few times, which is lovely. Good to be able to see he hasn't completely wasted away without home cooking. However he has become the total student cliche and brought his washing with him Grin !!

He doesn't offer much detailed info but has said the lectures are all available on line so he's considering staying home and watching them rather than going in - his halls are off campus so it is a bit of a commute. Hmmm....

He said they had to take blood from each other last week. He didn't get to have a go unfortunately as his partner saw his blood and immediately felt faint and had to go and lie down!

It seems like in no time at all they'll be back for Christmas - can't wait!

mumsneedwine · 14/11/2018 18:40

Mine learned how to take blood pressure today and actually used her stereoscope. Believe we are all guinea pigs at Xmas. And yesterday took her first patient histories - although she seemed to learn so much about each patient that might not be totally relevant ! She's a v good listener and not only got medical histories but life ones too. Said patients were so lovely. Seems weird my little girl is doing all this !

Katisha · 14/11/2018 18:52

DS was in the same lecture! Maybe he'll be able to take my blood pressure without me going into white coat syndrome cos I can't bear having it done!

specialted · 14/11/2018 18:59

Yes dd enjoyed doing that today too! Medsoc rugby and netball social tonight, suspect lectures will be a bit of a struggle tomorrow!

mumsneedwine · 14/11/2018 19:28

Was cheer and rugby on Saturday. The rugby boys don't seem to stop !

mumsneedwine · 14/11/2018 20:38

Wonder if ours know each other Katisha. If he plays rugby I hope he kept his clothes on at weekend. Some didn't 😳

Katisha · 14/11/2018 20:42

Perhaps they do but no - he doesn't play rugby! I think he's doing the Ward Round though...

mumsneedwine · 14/11/2018 21:14

Ooh so is mine. You ever know .......

mumsneedwine · 14/11/2018 21:15

Never. I can't spell.

specialted · 14/11/2018 21:49

Mine too!

mumsneedwine · 14/11/2018 22:04

It's going to be messy !!!

booface · 17/11/2018 10:07

So my DS is tucked up in his own bed having a well deserved lie in. He is back from Edinburgh for the weekend and seems to be enjoying himself up there. He isn't in quite as good a shape as he left in 9 weeks ago, mainly due to the fanta they serve with breakfast and dinnner and the amount of alcohol the medics rugby seem to consume! Note to self, make a dentist appointment for Christmas... goodness knows how that's going!

He hasn't settled on a group for a house for next year. I'm trying not to stress and imagine that's because no one has asked him...hopefully that will resolve itself one way or the other.! It seems as if most of you DS/DD have got a bit further down that path!

Lovely to have him home and looking forward to some meals together and seeing some of his home friends.
