Welcome to the new thread! Can't believe we are on the 4th already

Mumsneedwine...I agree, the raspberry-coloured stethoscope is very pretty.I suggested my DS get that one, but I got a slight raised eyebrow, as if to suggest..."are you serious?" He went for olive green!

Booface....excellent decision to get the train. Can totally sympathise with the distance...we have a 630mile round trip! Hope you're travelling first class...!!
Also made me smile to hear your DS can be a bit blunt...sounds very familiar! 😝

Movingmountains · 09/10/2018 22:21

We are also doing mega drive though at 460 miles not as bad as 750 and 630! It’s DSs birthday first weekend of half term so worked out nicely. He is really good at keeping in touch but eldest DS dreadful and very blunt so feel I’ve earned it! Booface I feel your pain.
I’ve got a y13 tutor group so am currently dealing with their angst over applications! Seems funny to think it was only a year agov

specialted · 10/10/2018 22:07

We are visiting dd next weekend too, but is only a 140 mile round trip! She is looking forward to family cocktail party tomorrow, slightly nervous as she's been told to bring her personal statement to the pre!

swingofthings · 11/10/2018 07:12

Lovely to see this thread still going with updates. Love the raspberry stethoscope!

DD is home for a week on Saturday. Manchester has a week off every month in addition to time off end of terms. It is supposed to be time to revise etc... DD will take the coach as it is so incredibly cheap but that's 9h! She doesn't mind, she gets WiFi on the coach so perfect opportunity to start revising.

Not sure how much I'll see if her as she is mainly coming back for her boyfriend! Still, will be lovely to see her.

Mommymoomitzi · 11/10/2018 22:22

Well. DD has spent the day examining rubber genitals 😮. She is loving the course, but, as everyone says, it’s already very hard work. She is coming home this weekend before taking her first AMK (applied medical knowledge) All years do the same test, so DD taking the same test as year 5!! They can get a negative score, they get a minus, if they get s question wrong. It’s to see hiw they develop and get them into exams early in. Gosh, how quickly has this all escalated? Doesn’t seem long since we were enjoying shopping and cocktails at sunny open days 🙄

swingofthings · 12/10/2018 05:56

Mommy they do the same at Manchester. It's so that they get a flavour of what it's like. They also encourage a lot of self learning outside of the topics they are studying so this gives them a chance to see where they stand with their self study.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Mommymoomitzi · 13/10/2018 04:23

DD has to cancel trip home. The storms in the South West closed roads and her train ( and all others) was cancelled She is upset and so am I. Sometimes they just seem like our babies, we want to give them a cuddle. Cross Country Trains gave no assistance or advice, now to battle and try and get a refund!

swingofthings · 13/10/2018 07:42

Oh I'm so sorry Mommy. Could she consider a coach or are these cancelled too? DD accepts that the journey takes 9 h rather than 5 but its cost under £20 rather than £130 on the train. She studies during the trip.

If its too late for any transport then big hug to you and DD x

Mommymoomitzi · 13/10/2018 08:12

Swingifthings - thank you for the hug, it’s appreciated. The storms are still bad in Plymouth, Cross Country still not stopping, I mentioned coach to DD, but she wouldn’t get back until lunchtime, so not really worth it for 24 hours, not even sure that they are running. I’ve told her to stay in, keep warm and drink hot chocolate ( a favourite childhood treat) I’m going to spend the day looking for a cottage to take my parents and dog down to Plymouth, for a few days. Hope no one else is affected by the delightful Storm Callum!

Movingmountains · 13/10/2018 08:24

Mommymoomitzi it is very windy in Devon but winds now dropped from yesterday. It’s always a problem because of the scenic but unreliable coastal stretch at Dawlish. Hope she’s ok - it’s disappointing to have to cancel visits home.
DS too far away for weekend visits 😢 so really looking forward to going up to see him at half term. He seems really settled now. Is loving his course and all the social stuff. Even the cooking and laundry seems to be fine 😊

muddlethro · 13/10/2018 09:28

Mommy...I really feel for you and your DD. That's so disappointing! 😥I'm looking forward to my DC coming down from Scotland for 'reading week' the week after next. I'd be gutted if they couldn't make it! Good idea to book a cottage, you should have no problem booking one at this time of year, and it should be cheaper too! That's something for your DD to look forward to... 🙂.
And by the way, your post about your DD examining rubber genitals really made me laugh...😂.
I'm really enjoying reading snippets about how all your DC are finding their courses. My DS says the work certainly doesn't let-up in year two! But he's really enjoying it, and this year he is an 'academic dad' to some first years, two of which are medics. And I'm glad to hear he's taking his responsibility seriously too. He and his 'academic wife' cooked their 'children' a meal the other night! I asked if he'd told his girlfriend that he now has a wife, to which he said, "errr, no, not yet"..."but she'll be fine about it"....hmmm...🤔

SomersetS · 13/10/2018 16:58

Lovely day meeting DD in the middle of England. She had an awards ceremony in Worcester so met up for that. Now a night in the Travelodge & nice dinner out.
Storm Callum bad in Somerset but we made it north.

specialted · 14/10/2018 18:33

Just been to visit dd for the day. She seemed very happy and relaxed and is enjoying lectures. Not sure exactly how much work is going on but she assures me it's all under control! Weekends seem to be very quiet, certainly didn't see anyone on her corridor but I think all the socialising goes on during the week.

booface · 15/10/2018 07:56

Lovely to hear about those of you making visits, but mommy, so sorry to hear how storm Callum messed up your plans. That is very hard.

We are off on Saturday morning, train all booked and getting bags packed with requested items that got left here in the rather hung over packing my DS did nearly 6 weeks ago!

specialted · 22/10/2018 12:57

Did you have a good visit booface? How are everyone's dc doing? Think studying is on the up according to dd, she has an exam at the end of next week apparently. She's trying to cram now in order to go to all the Halloween parties next week!

Movingmountains · 22/10/2018 23:09

We have had a lovely time visiting DS - he is great. Loves Sheffield and it was so nice to see him so happy. He did first dissection today! He says Julian’s lectures are fab as well 😊

swingofthings · 23/10/2018 06:00

It's nice to hear how everyone is adjusting well. I hope it is the case for those who haven't posted rece toy too.

DD has reading weeks so was home last week which felt very odd, although spend more time at her boyfriend than here! Studying hard though. She said anatomy took her (and everyone) by surprise by the detail of the body parts they had to remember and the scale of it all. She has always had an excellent memory and managing to retain a lot of info but she said even her memory skills were being challenged. She had to come up with a new strategy but is now more confident. PBL is fab and she's already done two placement ta in GP practices that was more interesting as more interacting than the days she spent with GPs on her work experience during her A levels.

Would love to hear from everyone how their DCs are settling.

booface · 23/10/2018 07:53

Great to hear how everyone is settling in. Just back from Edinburgh. So nice to see my DS. I would say he is adjusting well, but I think he needs a little bit more time to feel completely at home. He has a fairly full timetable, which seems to vary a lot from week to week. But plenty of time to do independent study (or party..!). Seems to be enjoying the PBL side of things too.

The Saturday night while we were there was ruby medic team initiation... hmmm I was a bit surprised that kind of hazing still goes on, but he seemed just about in one piece in the morning.

Edinburgh certainly is a beautiful city and I loved walking around and taking it all in.

Looking forward to having him back in 6 weeks for a nice long Christmas with the family back together. We didn't take his brother up as he is on an RAF camp, so that will be the first time to get us all together.

We are going to visit DD in Cardiff on Friday/Saturday this week which will be lovely ( if ds16 isn't too grumpyGrin)

She seems happy - making friends, joining societies, but is really finding it a lot of work! At first it was pre-reading that she struggled with, now it's writing up lecture notes ( if I understand it right). I think it is partly the sheer volume and detail of it all. How is your DD finding Cardiff biscuit?

They had a medic ball on Saturday, which she loved. They have been disecting twice a week, but no patients until next term I think!

specialted · 23/10/2018 17:37

Mumsneedwine have pm'd you

mumsneedwine · 23/10/2018 18:58

Thanks specialted.

specialted · 23/10/2018 21:12

and again mumsneedwine

biscuit2000 · 24/10/2018 09:15

Have visited Cardiff twice since DD started. DH & I met her for lunch in city on Sunday and went to Cardiff Bay after which was lovely. DD settled in really well and has embraced all uni life has to offer. She's not got any medics in her flat, which she likes as there is no study talk once she's 'home' but her flatmates do consult her about their various ailmentsWink
@drink as for studying she's doing fine but I think that's probably because it's no different to what she did at Alevel in terms of note writing, except as.she can take her laptop to lectures she's doing some of it as she goes along rather than doing it all at home as she had to at school. She says she also does some note writing in the kitchen rather than her room so she doesn't feel so shut away.

specialted · 06/11/2018 17:35

So I guess we're halfway through the first term! Hope everyone's dc are doing ok. Think dd is settled into her routine of lectures/partying ok and is happy. She seems to be managing everything ok apart from the mess in her room. Think they have to decide on house shares for next year soon which seems ridiculously early. Luckily there is heaps of student accommodation in Nottingham so they'll find somewhere, probably like something from the young ones!!

Movingmountains · 06/11/2018 17:42

I saw DS at weekend and he is loving studying medicine. He is also deciding on next years accommodation which does seem so early Specialted. He says it’s difficult as he likes his flat but thinks it might be better to live with other medics. So he is really undecided what to do - and a little worried that if he chooses medic friends over flat that he will be unpopular. He says one of the problems is that people on ‘normal’ courses don’t really socialise as much, so his flat mates don’t really have friends outside the flat. His flat mates keep saying he knows so many people!
