Looks like we need a new thread.

Presumably, by now, the lad concerned will have discovered for himself that he has to move out of his college accommodation between terms - I was merely pointing out that there need not be some deep, dirty family issue behind him expressing a desire to do what thousands of students at other establishments do without batting an eyelidSmile.

goodbyestranger · 13/08/2018 20:49

MarchingFrogs it's only relevant that it would be dead odd in the Oxford context.

That said, this is the same charming lad that Lonicera told us previously wanted 'to shag every girl in Oxford', so perhaps he's decided the short term times wouldn't quite suffice for that particular job, especially if required to write a weekly essay by a pesky St Catz History tutor.

(Also actually do thousands of students really not want to go home - in the absence of exciting travel plans/ internships/ Finals etc? Sounds weird to me).

goodbyestranger · 13/08/2018 20:51

Yes, and good luck from me too.

Needmoresleep · 13/08/2018 21:07

This approach was a problem for an East Asian friend of DS, who was able to stay over Christmas at Cambridge (long journey/high fares/demanding course - I would be surprised if there was family issues) but found himself alone and isolated. We ended up with an extra place setting for Christmas lunch.

Similarly the son of an Asian friend, currently studying in London, was allocating floor space to his former schoolfriends last Christmas. Other Universities emptied out. London did not, so his friends came to him. DS used to go into the library everyday over the holidays and it was never empty. For those with full on courses, vacations were a great time to catch up on reading.

goodbyestranger · 13/08/2018 21:14

We gave a bed to an Asian friend of one DS over the Christmas vac too Needmoresleep, who didn't go home for financial reasons but equally didn't stay in Oxford. The charmer that Lonicera talks about is a UK student however - very different.

Hi just returning after long break to wish everyone good luck for 16th. Very nervous here as a mixed bag of exam experiences. Hope everyone else is keeping calm. Gin

toomanytolist · 14/08/2018 18:06

Just put on the Results thread that UCAS tweeted yesterday it's 8am onward for Track updates on Thursday

Hubbleisback · 14/08/2018 18:14

Thanks toomany.

Hubbleisback · 14/08/2018 18:16

My nephew's college posted A level results in early hours last year!! Not sure how common that is.

roisin · 14/08/2018 18:40

JCQ object to any school publishing before 8 am, as results (to pupils) are embargoed until then; part of the exam board t&cs. So that college is certainly the exception. Good luck to all for results day, especially STEPpers.

Hubbleisback · 14/08/2018 19:18

That is a relief!! It would be nice to get some sleep. Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2018 19:20

Thanks Roisin :) We are doing ok here. dd is pretty chill, if she's happy about things, then that's all that matters to me.

dd will be travelling to college when track opens. I hope she waits til she gets there, otherwise her train will be witnessing a live update. Grin

With my first son (not Oxbridge) I kept refreshing through the night and when the status changed I ran into to my son who was fast asleep. Gave him a big hug and many congratulations to be told he already knew as his offer had been changed to unconditional 10 days before!!! Angry

goodbyestranger · 14/08/2018 21:09

UCAS always tweets that annually though. It's earlier, always. I just ignore the tweets and refresh from 6.30am onwards until Track springs to life. It's never been as late as 8am for any of mine.

HesMyLobster · 14/08/2018 23:29

Thankyou goodbyestranger, I'm so glad we've got you to share your wisdom.
Somebody had told DD track updates some time between 3 and 6 am! She wanted us to stay up all night to wait (and I definitely probably would have if I didn't know better from MN!Blush)
Im going to attempt to sleep for more than 2 consecutive hours tonight for the first time in a week!

Pomegranatemolasses · 14/08/2018 23:57

We're in Ireland, DS will be getting his results at 9am tomorrow. Am sick with nerves, Cambridge hangs in the balance.

I shall be the one driving him in - we're in such a different exam system that it's even more nerve wracking. If we go for a re mark, the results don't come in until Oct.

Still, at least we'll know the score tomorrow. Best of luck to all!

HesMyLobster · 15/08/2018 00:25

Wow, good luck to your DS pomegranate. I had no idea your results were a day earlier. Fingers crossed for good news 🍀

pietersburg · 15/08/2018 08:36

My DS has already got her grades and is due to start studying Classics Smile

She was asking the 2nd year freshers rep on the offer holders group if she could send off the forms yet. He was pretty rude and blunt, basically saying he’s not using any of his time until after results day to answer questions. Would he have perhaps been told to say this, or just unwelcomingGrin

Best of luck to people who sat a levels and are awaiting their results. Everything works out in the end. I agree with goodbye, start refreshinf track at around 6:30am.

pietersburg · 15/08/2018 08:37

Should read dd*.... it’s too early here !

HesMyLobster · 15/08/2018 09:07

Pietersburg is that at Oxford?
My DD is also hoping to do Classics (depending how tomorrow goes!)
Does your DD already have Latin/Greek, or starting from scratch like mine?

pietersburg · 15/08/2018 09:19

Doh! Yes, sorry, should’ve said. DD is going to Oxford.

She’s starting afresh, Course II. Perhaps they’ll bump into one another! Your daughter will be okay, although it’s so difficult to imbue a sense of calmness! How does she feel?

HesMyLobster · 15/08/2018 09:25

She doesn't think she's got the grades - wasn't happy with at least 2 exams.
She has a decent insurance that she likes.
I'm not giving up hope yet!

Hubbleisback · 15/08/2018 10:08

Hi Lobster no please don't give up hope. In same boat here about unhappy exams - not sure of much sleep tonight although trying to give pretence of calm. Confused
