Looks like we need a new thread.

DD’s room is £4;650 per year (not ensuite) and she’ll be paying for subsidised meals on top of that. She got her invoice on Friday for this term. Can anyone explain the college fee to me? It was on the invoice and then taken off again but as it’s not covered by her tuition fee loan what happens to it? And the tuition fee is a quarter of the annual total which seems odd as there are three terms?

We packed a mattress cover but not a topper. The bed was beautifully made up but DD wants her own stuff so was going to remake it before laundry contract day.

Hubble, a nice throw or blanket to go on the bed makes it look instantly more personal. Coat hangers come in handy. And some pictures, postcards or photos to give the notice board a bit of instant colour. The rooms are functional but very bare!

OhTheRoses · 30/09/2018 20:07

They've all got torches on their phones oybbk, haven't they? and sleep with them no more than 6 inches away.

Mattress cover looked fine. Pillows were poor but I expected that and took own. A double duvet is helpful because it's snuggly and makes the room look less utilitarian and comfortably covers two Shock.

I think the bed may be sub 3' but it was fine.

True Roses! But at least dd can phone for help while being able to see Grin

Why do cambridge gowns have the silly slits in the arms of the gowns? It caused a bit of confusion when dd tried it on!

IDK DD didn't try hers on while I was there.

DS is sounding a bit attention dry having atarted his masters on Tuesday to no more attention than look after dad, find the passport, make sure dad brings it.

He has moved back home after 6 months sharing with chums because he thinks he will study better here. quiet, clean, plenty of grub

PandaG · 30/09/2018 20:43

DS paying a little over 4k (can't remember exactly) for 27 weeks, excluding wifi and kfc. He has a set, reasonable sized bedroom with single bed, chest of drawers and built in wardrobe, then a decent sized study/living room with desk, 2 bookshelves, 2 easy chairs and a coffee table, and a tiny ensuite. He is really happy with his room!
He has messaged a few times, sounds happy, is cooking for his staircase tonight, i assume with help. I'm so glad a staircase meal was suggested to help them get to know each other.

chitchattery · 30/09/2018 20:43

Oybbk the slits in the gown are so that you can put your hands through them when you are eating so the big flappy sleeves don’t drag in the food. Dd had a lovely demonstration from the porter at her college when she arrived last year!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2018 20:57

Shock I had no idea! I hope someone told dd that this evening!

I'm impressed by the cooking Panda. dds gyp sharees are either really shy or invisible.

DS's college seems to have been pretty hot on suggesting/putting on get to know you activities - free lunch yesterday, bbq lunch today, his college parents cooked for him last night then took him to the bar, and staircase meal suggested for freshers tonight.

I hope DS knows about gown slits for matric dinner tomorrow night!!

chitchattery · 30/09/2018 22:39

If it’s any consolation I spent my entire degree at Cambridge not knowing about the gown slits. Think I just pushed the sleeves up and no-one seemed to be bothered. It took Dd going to Cambridge for me to find out😮.

HeyBells · 30/09/2018 22:39

DS's staircase is mixed years. There only seemed to be a few moving in on Sat, so I assumed his gyp was empty as more to arrive. DS was hoping that might solve the toaster problem.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2018 23:16

I pressed DDs gown before she went back, don't remember any slits.ConfusedI think the styles may vary a bit between colleges... oh... found this
https://www.gradunion.cam.ac.uk/facilities/gown-shop/gown-guide

the undergraduate gowns for colleges that were founded as women-only institutions do not have the arm slit (the better to preserve their undergraduates' modesty).

Hmmit's not as though they don't wear clothes underneath!Grin

Bekabeech · 01/10/2018 11:47

It's really interesting how Cambridge has different gowns for each college where as Oxford has a common style (commoner or scholar or graduate).

goodbyestranger · 01/10/2018 12:02

Oxford gown thing makes it far easier to borrow when you've lost your own at Bekabeech :) Very much more practical.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/10/2018 12:05

That's hilarious Errol! I'm hoping dd is aware that she's supposed to wear clothes underneath.

Maybe the slits allow for inappropriate access for cuddling Confused I can imagine a whole bat like gown is quite protective.

dd does have kitchen sharees, they are just jolly shy I think.

I'd best start a new thread...
