Looks like we need a new thread.

Cambridge glossary
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/university/student/cambridge-slang

Presumably the other place has one too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2018 16:06

dd would like an over door hanger as she has a bathroom door that isn't a fire door and a shower mat. We also forgot her tin opener in the general not being able to take everything with us. And a permanent marker for her milk.

Definitely a lanyard. We forgot one and her door closes unforgivingly.

Don't forget nhs number. Try and work out what their postal address is while you are there.

Hubbleisback · 30/09/2018 16:40

Why do we need nhs number if already registered?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2018 17:37

oh! It's only if they haven't registered for their new gp yet.

Cambridge was lovely yesterday for dropping off. DS has I think a standard sized room for his college, not big or small, bigger than I had at uni. It's light and airy and nice view. I really liked his college in the sunshine and felt calm given the normal tourist hustle of the city.

He is paying about £3,750 for 30 weeks, not ensuite though and has to pay subsidised charge for each meal. Compared to peers at other universities it is a bargain, downside being ferrying everything back and forth. In his ballot you got to choose price band/specific rooms which were still available but no guarantee of them as others also choosing them.

He has forgotten a few things, but can manage/use the local shops! Can't think of anything specific to remember, we did put in a tie at the last minute.

How many days of underwear - want enough but not so much that things don't get washed!! Grin

OhTheRoses · 30/09/2018 18:57

Hubble the passport! A mirror.

Hubbleisback · 30/09/2018 18:59

Thanks Roses!

OhTheRoses · 30/09/2018 19:02

Hubble dd has 21 pairs of pants and 14 pairs of socks.

I think the hall bill is about £4,200. Catering/hospitality on top.

I got dd a little wallet with a key ring and perspex front for her student card. She is in the habit of using a cross body handbag for keys, id and money. One of the benefits of a full time working mother and sub optimal care.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2018 19:03

15-16 ... two weeks worth plus a couple of spares?

Hubbleisback · 30/09/2018 19:04

Thanks HeyBells ties now in.

Hubbleisback · 30/09/2018 19:07

Thanks for underwear advice. A quick trip out for some more tomorrow I think. Grin

OhTheRoses · 30/09/2018 19:07

We are just home btw. Had a lovely night in Suffolk and "did" a stately home on the way back. Got a lovely card and some lip balm to send this week.

Planning to send regular little things: starbucks voucher, lavendar bag, fridge magnet, etc.

OhTheRoses · 30/09/2018 19:09

Something I did for ds (girls are cleaner - I think). I put three fitted sheets on the bed, three pillowcases, three duvet covers. So all he had to do every couple of weeks was peel off a dirty one. Blush

Hubbleisback · 30/09/2018 19:12

Wow Roses what a clever idea!!

Hubbleisback · 30/09/2018 19:13

Glad you had such a good time. Sending things is a lovely idea.

Hubbleisback · 30/09/2018 19:22

Do we need mattress cover?

goodbyestranger · 30/09/2018 19:25

Provisional driving licence is my preference for ID, given the number of passports lost after club nights etc. One of my DS's has been told he won't get another passport he's racked up so many losses in such a short space of time.

The peeling idea is a good one, and much tried and tested - one of one of the DD's friends had ten sheets on his bed at the start of term!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2018 19:27

Do we need mattress cover?

There will almost certainly be a mattress cover, but they might benefit from a mattress topper.

goodbyestranger · 30/09/2018 19:27

Or driving licence! Plenty of your DCs have no doubt passed their test before going up :)

goodbyestranger · 30/09/2018 19:32

Yes Hubble you do very definitely need a mattress cover. I've not yet found a mattress cover in college other than one very, very grimy greyed one which kind of defeated the purpose. Well, and one college which actually made the beds up in full, duvet cover incl. but then I didn't dig down to see whether a mattress cover was installed, I was too impressed with the full hotel service. My advice is to put as much distance between your DC and the mattress as possible and then to fumigate the intermediate layers each vac.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2018 19:36

girls are cleaner - I think

Ah... maybe this is why my impression at a women's college was of decent mattress covers being the norm!Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2018 19:38

dds has a mattress cover, but her bed is very utilitarian and I've said to let me know if she needs a topper. I didn't dare look at the mattress.

I'm not sure dd packed enough underwear reading this!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2018 19:39

She has a torch by her bed, I have a horror of powercuts as we went through a spate of having loads.

Quantity of undies obv depends on how often they want to do their laundry.
Don't worry - whereas some larger items might be awkward for them to obtain, they're probably clever enough to work out how to get more underwear in a mid-sized town. Both Cambridge and oxford have all the standard shops - it's not like they're out in remote campuses.
