DS has done his exam (Oxford, History) and written his essay. Now, the waiting begins.......

Anyone else?

HardcoreLadyType · 12/01/2017 09:38

DD has got an offer, but doesn't want to go to the college she has been pooled to. Gaaaah!

Allthebestnamesareused · 12/01/2017 09:46

Which college Hardcore? L

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2017 09:52

Nothing in the post for DD this morning, rats.

Hardcore - that's a bugger. DD's assessment of probabilities is that if she is pooled it would likeliest be Murray Edwards, and although she loved her 7 years at an all girls' school, she really doesn't want 4 more even on a male-dominated course. So you and your DD have my sympathy, there can be good reasons for college preference - does she have an offer elsewhere she really likes?

shockthemonkey · 12/01/2017 09:59

Oh no Hardcore!

Don't know what to say other than I went to a less popular college myself and have no regrets at all!

But it will depend what else she has lined up, obviously.

DimsieMaitland · 12/01/2017 10:18

DD just rang - she has an offer for History at her first choice college.

AnnoyedBeyondBelief · 12/01/2017 10:39

Dimsie - is that Oxford or Cambridge..

lurking .. waiting....

AnnoyedBeyondBelief · 12/01/2017 10:39

PS .... Dimsie - big congratulations...

HardcoreLadyType · 12/01/2017 10:42

Thanks Erroll and shock. It's not Murray Edwards, which I think she might've been okay with.

She also has an offer from Bristol, which she does like.

First world problems, I know.

Hopefully you will both hear soon.

HardcoreLadyType · 12/01/2017 10:44

Well done, Dimsie's DD.

DimsieMaitland · 12/01/2017 10:49

Cambridge. She's a bit stunned at the moment - and also doing Mocks this week so it's all been rather stressful.

shockthemonkey · 12/01/2017 10:58

Offer from Catz -- one very happy boy here!

Good luck everyone else

TheMortificadosDragon · 12/01/2017 11:05

Are applicants with pool offers given an opportunity of visiting the relevant college before deciding whether to accept or reject?

Congratulations everyone, so far its been mostly a good morning from the sound of it. I'm not too sorry DD didn't get her letter one way or the other today, as she did get her epq result, an A* so we can celebrate that tonight without it being overshadowed.

HardcoreLadyType · 12/01/2017 11:23

Congratulations, shock'sDS.

shockthemonkey · 12/01/2017 11:28

Thanks Hardcore!

Bristol's lovely too.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 12/01/2017 13:23

Post still not arrived but I clearly had too little faith - DD just rang and said she just received an email from Emma offering her a place! So very thrilled for her, specially as she spent the last month feeling the interview hadn't gone well and being very stoical about it all.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE!

Hoccleve · 12/01/2017 13:35

Just a thought Hardcore- maybe take her to see the college-offer holders always warmly received! Also often the accomodation turns out not to be in the beautiful medieval gothic quad that she may have had in mind at her first choice but in theirSmile brutalist sixties block that you never get to see which may influence her. Everyone always ends up thinking their own college is the best - and if it's Mary Beard's college the gardens are stunning ( as if Mary Beard being a Fellow wasn't enough!) Huge congrats on the offer- it's getting harder year on year and first class applicants who would have got an offer even a few years ago are missing out. To be even able to mix it in this company is outstanding and bodes well for their future academic career at whatever top class institution these terrific kids attend. Special shout- out for Durham, where DS is thriving and being exceptionally well taught.

RhodaBull · 12/01/2017 14:07

DS IN IN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nightmare moment when postman walked past front gate... and then doubled back. Funnily enough all the rain had softened the envelope and it sort of curled open in my hand Wink

ByTheSea · 12/01/2017 14:21

Congratulations or commiserations to those who have heard.

Post came today (according to DH who is working from home) and still no letter from Oxford.

Does anyone know how we can chase it?

Hoccleve · 12/01/2017 14:36

I would call or email the admissions tutor at the college - your DC will need to do it I think if you were to call or email themselves because they prob cant tell the parents.

shockthemonkey · 12/01/2017 14:38

Oh no, must be torture, Sea. If you look on the college website they often tell you by what date it's reasonable to chase if you have not heard.

That date is often a week or so after the date you should have so keeping to it would require superhuman restraint.

I would probably allow myself to chase three days in. Any longer is torture.

goodbyestranger · 12/01/2017 14:42

That's fantastic news Rhoda - I've been rooting for him!

Well done also to other DC of course but Rhoda's DC had a tough ride last year, so that result is especially good!

What course is your DS doing at Durham Hoccleve, out of interest/ if you don't mind saying?

RhodaBull · 12/01/2017 14:46

Thanks, goodbyestranger. Any news for your ds? Physics, was it?

Hoccleve · 12/01/2017 14:50

Sorry Sea I wasn't aware that some colleges do that - at my own it's e-mail plus letter, really because the overseas candidates would be waiting for ever. If it's a weather- related thing I can't see anyone being too grumpy were you to contact them - our admissions tutor is very user- friendly! Poor you the waiting is horrid! Hope you get the news you want.

ByTheSea · 12/01/2017 14:57

Thanks all! She is currently saying she would rather go to Edinburgh anyway (not that she have received an offer yet) but still...

Pins and needles...

ChaosTrulyReigns · 12/01/2017 14:59

DD has an offer from Cambridge.

Just thrilled.

Saddened that mom isn't here to tell, but it's a wonderful thing for dad, he places such value on academic effort and application. Shame I'm a consummate giverupper.

And her close friend also has an offer, which is utterly the best possible outcome.

She has just been dropped back off to school to see her friends and not taken her coat. It's 1C and snowing. All those brains! Grin

Congratulations and commiserations to all other wonderful DC on this thread.
