DS has done his exam (Oxford, History) and written his essay. Now, the waiting begins.......

DD has started on her reading list.

DS2 has made it to Oxford for maths. Absolutely thrilled for him

DS1 got his place for English at Cambridge. He didn't get up until 9.30 - I was a nervous wreck. It's his father's old college, so he's thrilled.

Well done to everyone's DC.
I think I am driving DD1 mad. I went to Cambridge and every time I say something about it she says "But that was 30 years ago!"

She has a point. I have looked at some recent photos and my 3rd year bedroom is now part of a beautiful new library, and the ADC is unrecognisable from the pit I remember! I understand why she wouldn't entertain applying to my old college. I am so excited for her. It's wasted on 18 year olds (although I wouldn't go back to draughty bathrooms with 17th century single glazed windows and no heating for anything!)

Hello, DimsieMaitland! Ds is off to History at Cambridge too. I was at university 30 years ago too and I don't think I dare start another sentence with, "In the Eighties..."

Ds has started on his reading list. There were about 4000 books on there and a note at the bottom said that if he ran out they could suggest more

That sounds like my reading list for English back in the Middle Ages - just a little light reading such as the King James Bible, Darwin, Marx, Homer, Ovid, etc.
Luckily DD's list is a very realistic 3 books - but then she applied to her college on the basis it seemed very relaxed! It means she will get a proper break before she goes, which I think is valuable.
Has your DS had to choose his papers already? DD is a little disappointed that the Themes and Sources paper she had set her heart on is not available this year, but there is so much choice she will find something to interest her. She's reading her way through a general British history to check which period she wants to do for political and social. I am terribly over-invested in it all but that's because I'm so delighted for her (and trying not to think about the fact it's prompted me to apply for my doctorate 25 years later than I should have done it!)

Ds wondered who might be in the next room, and I said if he heard strains of Daryl Hall & John Oates and a bit of Radio 4... I'd pop out! He was only half amused...

Yes, ds has had to choose his papers. It was tough as it seemed easiest to choose what he already knew a bit about, but it all looked interesting. He wanted to choose practically all the Themes & Sources!
