Do we have a thread already?
ds1 has decided to definitely apply to Oxford to do Biochemistry. He will probably apply to St John's.

Stop the presses!

AAA offer for History from Exeter. Thanks to the History Department for not doing the double A!!! Halloween Grin

cathyandclaire · 31/10/2014 17:25

Wooooo! Wonderful news, well done :)

MrsGhoulofGhostbourne · 31/10/2014 17:58

Fab!!!!!!!!! Littleham, please give your DD a hug from all of us! Halloween Grin

MrsGhoulofGhostbourne · 31/10/2014 18:02

secretsquirrels would be interesting to know - not that we ever would be able to - if Durham saw it was after the Oxbridge cut-off, and therefore assumed he was not applying to Oxbridge, and snapped him up early as a topflight candidate who was not applying to Oxbridge - presumably their dream profile...?

secretsquirrels · 31/10/2014 18:08

Well done to your DD Littleham
MrsGhoulofGhostbourne You are right, who knows? They do ask for UMS on AS papers so he was a good candidate. (Incidentally he hated Durham when he went to the offer holders open days)
I wonder what will happen when there are no AS results for universities to look at. More entrance exams?

boys3 · 31/10/2014 18:19

well done to your DD Littleham!

AAA, though better than the AAA offer for English, still does seem a bit high. Presumably if your DD was successful with Oxford the offer from there would be no higher, or given HAT and interviews, possibly AAA with no needed ?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 31/10/2014 18:23

Ahhhhhhh, well done to Littleham junior!

Fab news

Molio · 31/10/2014 18:34

She must be a very strong applicant Littleham - fantastic; it all bodes well!

Oxford will be AAA boys3.

AtiaoftheJulii · 31/10/2014 18:35

Fab news for your dd, Littleham :)

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 31/10/2014 18:37

We've got Exeter, Sheffield and Birmingham offers now: the excitement helps put Cambridge in context a bit!

AtiaoftheJulii · 31/10/2014 18:57

FWIW, dd had acknowledgements from Leeds, Bristol, Royal Holloway and Oxford within about 3 days of sending in her application. Had an offer from Glasgow within 24 hours, but no other acknowledgement (AFAIK) or invitation to visit. Leeds and RH have both also offered, and both have sent invitations to offer holders days.

Figmentofmyimagination · 31/10/2014 19:08

Well done littleham's DD! But AAA still seems quite high to me for Exeter. Do employers really see it as an AAA university for humanities? I'm not sure.

sassymuffin · 31/10/2014 19:13

DD update: Offer from Kent AAB but a sweetener of £2000 per year if she achieves AAA. This will probably be her insurance. Offer from Queen Mary's A*AA. Invite to interview for York on 9th Dec. Submitted more forms to Cambridge and waiting on Warwick.
This has relieved so much pressure as DD totally loved Queen Mary's so if she doesn't get in Cambridge she will firm there (pending A2 results!)

MrsBartlet · 31/10/2014 19:18

That sounds good sassymuffin - which subject is that for?

welshpixie · 31/10/2014 19:19

Atia My DD also had a quick offer from Glasgow and then no more information, whereas Birmingham and Leicester both contacted her before their offers and after. It has made her think carefully about Leicester as she feels they want her more because of the style of contact. I know that it is mainly automated but she feels wanted there and is seen as much less of a number.

sassymuffin · 31/10/2014 19:24

Thanks MrsBartlet sorry meant to say she has applied for Law.

MrsBartlet · 31/10/2014 19:27

Well done to her. My niece is in her second year at Kent (not Law) and seems very happy there.

sassymuffin · 31/10/2014 19:31

Good to know, I think DD is the only person from her school to apply to Kent and we have no prior knowledge of it.

Decorhate · 31/10/2014 20:07

I was talking to someone recently who just graduated from Kent. I got the impression that they found it a bit too small by Y3 & had outgrown its delights. But that was more about the city than the course!

Littleham · 31/10/2014 21:45

Agree with you all that the A*AA is still very high from Exeter, especially as she just goes to an ordinary comprehensive. This tallies with the high predictions=high offer story. It is definitely at the top end of the prospectus grades!

I suspect she will Firm the York offer, as that A* from Exeter will scare her off. It is ironic that if she got an offer from Oxford (highly unlikely) that it would be at AAA and thus less than Exeter.

Well done Littleham's DD.

How is she preparing for the HAT test? Does she have all the practice papers (and answers)?

Littleham · 31/10/2014 23:17

I wish! It is all a bit haphazard really.

She has downloaded the papers and had a go at them. She found a teacher to mark one, who kindly ripped it apart (not literally) and suggested ideas, whilst admitting that she also struggled with it.

I just want her to feel it has gone Ok.

Molio · 01/11/2014 08:48

It's very determined policy for the humanities at the moment Littleham, so not really ironic. They have the pre-tests after all, look at work and, critically, interview. They also barely over offer. They want those they've offered to make the grades!

Littleham · 01/11/2014 10:32

But it is very strange that it is higher than Oxford Molio, unless of course all universities are going higher this year (and Oxford will follow too)?
