Results Day and UCAS

MotherOfGirls · 06/08/2013 12:03

Eldest DD is expecting A level results on 15th so this is my first experience of UCAS. She seems to think her results will go to UCAS before they are emailed to her by her school, and so she will find out if she has made her offer by checking her UCAS account. She also thinks this happens at midnight. Can anyone confirm any of this, please?

Noticed in the paper that several places are guaranteeing university managed accommodation to all clearing and adjustment students. Not so for ds going to London. No idea how to start finding somewhere, there must be tons of people in similar boats. Do they all look in the local paper?

nemno · 15/08/2013 12:19

ISing My son did Oceanography at Southampton. He had a blast and made very good friends. If your DC does well in his first year he could consider being transferred to an undergrad masters which gives a fabulous year abroad.

More good news for you/your DC is that his cohort have been very employable.

Best of luck to everyone. I worked the results day phones at my university for a couple of years as a student; they remain some of the most stressful days of my life and I never got to find out how the people I talked to did :(

MABS · 15/08/2013 12:48

so pleased to read all your good news :)

MABS · 15/08/2013 12:52

and news Just??!

Norem · 15/08/2013 13:09

Can anyone advise, ds has missed his step grades for Cambridge and has got into Warwick which is great.
However he is going to appeal and have the step paper remarked, which apparently takes 5 days.
If he does not accept his Warwick place for 5 days what happens?
Does he need to let them know what's happening?

higgle · 15/08/2013 13:11

Late to the thread but very pleased to say my DS2 got into Leeds, his first choice, where he will be doing Fashion Design. I was at a quite serious meeting just after 9 this morning but several of us in attendance were smiling like mad because of the results. Congratulations to everyone who has done well.

MissMarplesBloomers · 15/08/2013 13:13

Well Warwick accepted DD with ABB not the AAB that she was offered so suprised but delighted.

Still grinning........off out for celebrations later. Grin

ICBINEG · 15/08/2013 13:14

Norem I would phone up and ask them.

I didn't realise Cambridge still did step. Have they definitely rejected?

I missed my step grades and had to wait a day for a decision but still got in....I was terrified that I would lose my insurance place but both institutions made it clear that that wouldn't happen.

JustGettingOnWithIt · 15/08/2013 13:16

He's in to his 1st choice! If it helps anyone else: both uni's had decided to accept him, and in order to do that they change their offers to un-conditional, which sparks the e-mail saying they've exceeded grades.

Eatyourveg I don't know much about them other than driving past lots of their buildings, and they're not cheap (little in London is) but unite-students.com are one of the big all-in set price hall providers, which might work if he's arriving unexpectedly, until he has a better feel for where he is.
The other trick is to check out tfl (transport for London) routes and prices. Sometimes it's cheaper to travel in from less desirable areas, all depends on how street wise he is.

snorris · 15/08/2013 13:20

Another with a dd1 off to Exeter Grin. She's a bit miffed at the moment though as NHS bursaries have her documents so has no ID to go out celebrating!!

greenfolder · 15/08/2013 13:22

i need help!

dd needed 280 pts for 1st choice, 260 for 2nd- got 220. track is still showing both places as conditional (ie hasnt updated)

have spoken to both (greenwich and portsmouth) who have said that they are still considering her application- she got a b in the subject she wants to study. greenwich have said this could take several days- portsmouth by tomorrow.

she can't go into clearing until they have decided!!!! any thoughts? can we ask them to just release her into clearing- is this wise?

ICBINEG · 15/08/2013 13:26
FannyMcNally · 15/08/2013 13:36

Feel for you green folder. We had conditional on the insurance offer and wanted to get into clearing. Luckily they came through with an offer which she has declined. But apparently it could takes days to release her into clearing! Is this true? We have until tomorrow morning before an offer made in clearing expires.

JustGettingOnWithIt · 15/08/2013 13:37

Cheers ICBINEG! He has sen?s and is home ed, and set his sights at engineering which was pretty ambitious for both of us given the circs.
He'd deferred for a year to do more exams alongside a job to get money and experience under his belt, and we kind of needed things to work out for him. Breathes and crosses fingers for everyone else who doesn't know where they stand.

JustGettingOnWithIt · 15/08/2013 13:39

Fanny can she talk to the uni making her the offer?

ISingSoprano · 15/08/2013 13:40

nemno that is really good to hear - particularly the bit about employability! Grin

MABS · 15/08/2013 13:44

great Just, so pleased

Milliways · 15/08/2013 13:45

Well DS has got his first choice, but it didn't update on track, only his 2nd choice. Went and collected results to find he met the 1st choice offer, spent ages trying to get through on the phone, then they said he 'should' be in but would have to go and check and call him back! A tense wait ensued but they confirmed an he will be off to Manchester Grin

noddyholder · 15/08/2013 13:45

Anyone with a dc going to Bournemouth Arts AUB?

alreadytaken · 15/08/2013 13:47

mine's into their firm choice and both the closest friends have their places. So it was celebrations all round. FannymcNally - maybe phone UCAS and ask for advice or ask on their Facebook page.

SDhopeful · 15/08/2013 13:57

(watching as spectator as not us till next year) This is mumsnet at its best! So supportive to all - your DC are all so lucky already to have such lovely mums! Grin

FannyMcNally · 15/08/2013 14:03

Thanks for the advice. Have phoned clearing uni and there's nothing they can do formally until she's in clearing. Although they are holding a place for her for now. Will get dd2 to contact UCAS.

JustGettingOnWithIt · 15/08/2013 14:11

Fanny hopefully they'll keep holding the place.
If it helps anyone, you can also tweet questions to UCAS @ucas_online
They're quite swamped, but it means you have got questions lodged in the queue iyswim.

MissMarplesBloomers · 15/08/2013 14:14

DD's poor best friend is STILL waiting on her bloody step test result from Cambridge, 3 A* & another A & they can't confirm till tomorrow Shock
beyond cruel I think, poor lass. She wants to do engineering & is a Very Bright girl who has worked her socks off , had a fab interview at several colleges.....what more do they want FFS?!!
