Results Day and UCAS

MotherOfGirls · 06/08/2013 12:03

Eldest DD is expecting A level results on 15th so this is my first experience of UCAS. She seems to think her results will go to UCAS before they are emailed to her by her school, and so she will find out if she has made her offer by checking her UCAS account. She also thinks this happens at midnight. Can anyone confirm any of this, please?

Phew Just goood news.
DS1 missed his first choice grades by miles but they've still given him a place Confused

HepsibarCrinkletoes · 15/08/2013 14:25

Lots of Exeters I see! I'm so pleased that DD2 is off there - she is beyond excited. Long may it continue.

FannyMcNally · 15/08/2013 14:35

Dd1 just graduated from Exeter and staying on to do her MSc. She never wants to leave! Your DC will have a ball there, congratulations!

HepsibarCrinkletoes · 15/08/2013 15:04

That's lovely to hear Fanny, thank you!

RustyBear · 15/08/2013 15:19

Another Exeter fan here! I met my DH there and then DD went there in 2008 to do Psychology. So 3/4 of our fsmil are Exeter graduates. DS was the maverick - he went to Warwick. I was on Mumsnet results threads with both of them.

Congratulations to all who got in, but especially to Miiliways DS - my first post on Mumsnet was congratulating him on getting in to the school DS was about to leave - cam hardly believe 7 years have passed!

RustyBear · 15/08/2013 15:21

Fsmil? Family!

80sbabe · 15/08/2013 15:25

Very frustrated here, DS exceeded his conditional offer for his first choice but they still haven't confirmed through UCAS. He's been refreshing his laptop every 5 minutes since 11 am when he got back with his results.

His insurance however confirmed that he's guaranteed a place back on 11th August and they have now updated that to unconditional.
He phoned his first choice and they just said they haven't updated their system yet as they are dealing with students who fell short on their offers and he'll just have to wait for his confirmation..

I think it's so unfair, surely for students who have met the requirements they could get all their offers onto UCAS first and then do anything else later, DS has worked his socks off and now he feels he can't even celebrate because he's still not 100% sure.

Mumofthreeteens · 15/08/2013 15:32

Ds1 is off to uni. Hurrah! So nice to have a stress free day as last year was awful with his poor As results.

nemno · 15/08/2013 15:34

Of course he can go and celebrate 80sbabe. The decision is already made, in fact there was none for the university to make as he got his grades, he has his place. Well done your DS

melodyangel · 15/08/2013 15:54

Well done all those clever DC's and proud parents too.

So glad to see so many getting in to either their firm or insurance unis.
Last year was a nightmare for DS1 missing both his choices so I really feel for all those that have missed out. Sending very unmumsnetty hugs to you all.

stephrick · 15/08/2013 15:57

Yes 80sbabe, unis all have a different way of doing things. He exceeded his grades, a no brainer I should think, understand why your'e on tenderhooks though. Any parents sending a DC off to Cardiff this year, Anxious for results, now anxious of DD going.

CleverlyConcealed · 15/08/2013 16:17

Congrats everyone Grin

This is the first year in ages we haven't had to bite our nails over A level, AS or GCSE results. I'm just biting my nails because dd is off to study abroad next week.

80sbabe · 15/08/2013 16:21

nemno yes I know that logically he has got his place, but DS won't celebrate until he's seen that confirmation and it is definitely definite.
It's just the way he is, he's had his heart set on this place for almost two years and he's scared that something could still go wrong at the last minute.
I'm sure it will be fine but it will be a relief when they do update UCAS.

stephrick It's one anxiety after another isn't it ? I was wondering earlier if I'll be any less nervous if I have to go through this again with my younger DC Grin

nemno · 15/08/2013 16:27

Ah well I do hope it comes through soon 80sbabe, mine had to wait days (but this was a few years ago). And no it doesn't get easier with younger DCs . This is the first year in 8 that I haven't had exam stress.

JulietteMontague · 15/08/2013 16:54

I think it's so unfair, surely for students who have met the requirements they could get all their offers onto UCAS first and then do anything else later, DS has worked his socks off and now he feels he can't even celebrate because he's still not 100% sure.

80sbabe I'm sure you didn't mean to be so insensitive, but you do realise that a lot of those students 'who fell short' will also be waiting, wondering whether their offers will be be confirmed or rejected and worrying about whether they even have a place through clearing. Some of them will be devastated so maybe universities concentrate on seeing what they can do for those students facing real uncertainty rather than re-confirm a done deal.

Mozzamum47 · 15/08/2013 16:55

Hi folks, I really need some help. DS2 has just received his AS results - to say the least they were awful. He was predicted ABBB and actually got DUUU. The worst I have ever known. He cannot believe it, we cannot believe it and nor can any of his teachers. In his mocks he did better than expected. He did work really, really hard and we were assured that everything was going according to plan. I have ordered a priority remark with the papers to be returned as soon as possible. Has anyone else ever had the same or similar situation and, if so, what did they do about it. His subjects were Maths, F Maths, Econ and Physics. Should say that at GCSE he got 1 A*, 2A's the rest B's. In a state of shock at the moment and need as much help as posisble.

Remotecontrolduck · 15/08/2013 17:22

Oh shit really sorry about that Mozzamum! I don't think there's a lot you can do, apply for the remark and see what has happened. I know someone who's grade went from an E to an A when they did this, so they can get thungs wrong some times!

However I hate to say it but having done so badly in all 4, there is unlikely to have been a mistake with all of them (though could happen, admittedly!). What do you think went wrong? Did he misread instructions? Panic in the exams? Underestimate their difficulty and just not answer the questions sufficiently?

He could repeat the year, I would say he can resit in January if he's prepared to work hard but of course Jan resits are no longer are they. Are his school/college prepared to keep him on with those marks?

Maybe academia isn't for him, and he's too ashamed to admit that A levels were just too much? Could you look into vocational options?

It's hard enough with one surprise awful result like DD got, let alone 4. You have my symapthy!

Remotecontrolduck · 15/08/2013 17:24

Looking at his subjects too he's picked very demanding ones, even very bright students come unstuck with those, even those achieveing A* at GCSE

I'm not sure what to suggest, repeating the year could be your best bet, maybe with different a levels. Talk to his colllege/school asap

greenfolder · 15/08/2013 17:28

UPDATE;
My day so far;

dd1 logs onto ucas track; no change- still conditional offers from Greenwich and Portsmouth. Phones greenwich and is told that she hasnt met requirments so has no offer. go to school to find she has BCE against her points offers of 280/260.
Come home- phone both unis. Greenwich say they are considering her application and may not know until next week. But if she likes, they can release her. She says no. Portsmouth says the same, but say they will decide by end of day. At this point it is only 10.30.

spend next 2 hrs checking track. go shopping. on way home dd1 remembers the business card the head of course at greenwich gave her. compose an email, emphasising work experience, knowing others on the course and years above.

3 mins later she has an email from head of course saying she is reviewing her application now and what is her phone number. she calls her 2 mins after that, says she has reread her personal statement, impressed with work experience and whilst wouldnt usually offer to a candidate with 220, she is willing to give her a place.

For those looking at this for next year my only advice is this; have a personal connection with the decision maker and target them!

off for the biggest glass of wine ever!

Mozzamum47 · 15/08/2013 17:29

We just don't know yet. Everyone is in such a state of shock. School are being very supportive and are saying they just don't believe it. He had an operation near his frontal lobe in October last year (after a year of being quite poorly ill) but there was no sign that anything was too significantly wrong. He scored between A's and B's in his mocks. He is naturally very bright at Maths and Sciences and really is academic. The GCSE's he managed to achieve were with his illness and were IGCSE's!

nemno · 15/08/2013 17:31

Mozzamum that sounds a horrible situation. I can't help with specifics but did want to say that in 8 years of DC getting very mixed results, in the end the only one that really matters is the most recent one. This blot on your DS's record will become irrelevant . Honestly, my problem year with DS1 was 4 years ago, he now has a 2.1 degree and a high paying, rewarding graduate job.

It sounds like you are already doing the right things. Talk to the teachers and work out what went wrong (once you've seen the papers). I'm sure you'll come up with a plan that will be right for your DS. All the best.

noddyholder · 15/08/2013 17:33

Mozza so sorry That happened to ds very close friend and he had them re marked but they came back the same He repeated the year and is now off to cardiff to do sports science I think so it can come good

Oh dear Mozza. Would the school maybe be able to arrange a visit to an Ed Psychologist to see if he is okay? It is a shame after all you seem to have been through. I came in here to have a little gloat about my lovely DS but it doesn't seem right now Sad

ajandjjmum · 15/08/2013 17:57

Mozza
That happened with a set of January modules for DS - he didn't do well at anything, but got a U in the Physics modules - which he was down to study at uni.
Everyone thought it was an error in the marking, but when the paper came back, he'd just screwed up.

Fortunately he pulled it back in the summer exams, but it did cause added stress.
Feeling for you and your DS.
