BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 07/07/2010 20:29

Evening all.

I have made mucho mucho soup, so the weather is guaranteed to be roasting hot for the next week.

I had loads I was going to say after catching up but it has all gone out of my head.

So I will stick to evening all.

PortiaNovmerriment · 07/07/2010 20:31

I still need to catch up. Have been on another thread. Poor old Fab. I hope she gets things sorted out- I feel so sorry for her.

How is everybody?

Lizzylou · 07/07/2010 20:33

Fluff, I used to be sobbing over books in the library, it took me ages to believe that German people now had nothing to do with the past. I also tempered Nazi Germany with some Arab/Israeli war history so my sympathy kinda wore thin after a while...not for what people went through during the holocaust, but for what they felt entitled to do afterwards.

Lizzylou · 07/07/2010 20:39

Oh God, is that Fab?
I had no idea.

DeFluffy · 07/07/2010 20:40

we can bore each other senseless on fb lizzy, always wanted to understand arab/israeli but couldnt keep it straight in head. I settled for 'they're all bastards' apart from those upstanding, stiff upperlipped Brits, salt of the earth etc

Bitter - is going to be really hot forecast said.

Portia - did you enjoy your mn mail? Or was it only me that got a personal thank you email for being so helpful with the Rarebird situation?

sorry you're illing though fluff - i am pretty sure he wont be poisoning you

jetcat · 07/07/2010 20:46

double - i did WWI at A level a few years back. It was amazing, and i was so shocked i didnt already know much about it - considering i was in my early 30s by this point. My favourite memory is reading Vera Brittain's Testament of Youth while on holiday in France, not far from where she was actually stationed and writing about. It was so moving and so so sad

PortiaNovmerriment · 07/07/2010 20:51

Defluff- yes, I was the proud recipient of a missive from Miss Greyling

My main sources of WW1 knowledge are All Quiet on the Western Front, Goodbye to all that and Blackadder goes forth , I know moer about WW2, have read quite a lot of stuff about Holocaust, Anne Frank, SOE, WW2 etc. Saw a really good French film on DVD recently, Army of Crime, sad true story about a French resistance group in WW2.

Trillian - (thinks back to own career girl days) are you getting all the admin support you need, and are you delegating as much as is sensible. In general - I think if you say no to some things, then you get less taken for granted!

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 07/07/2010 20:56

I consider myself reasonably intelligent but the gaps in my knowledge of history and geography are shocking.

At one christmas bash I went to, some of my friends bought me a blank outline map of the world and had me fill in the countries - to much hilarity.

Bitter, I'm funny with Geography. I thought Birmingham and Bristol were pretty close. Glasgow and Edinburgh too.
I had to actually measure with my fingers on a map to realise that England is as wide across the bottom as it is long.

I really don't know as much as I'd like to. Vague recollection from GCSE History, things I've picked up on the way, random bits of performance related facts.

A few years ago there was a series on Auschwitz on TV and it was shocking, even though I knew the basics, it was truly shocking. The fact that the Allies did know what was happening. I'd assumed we'd discovered it during liberation.

jetcat · 07/07/2010 21:10

double - i have just turned it off That poor woman!

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 07/07/2010 21:11

Turn it off.

I am watching some documentary on bbc4.

The thing is I find history really interesting now, I just don't know anything about it. I am so uneducated.

I'm hoping DH will want to watch the wire soon but he is currently chopping up dwarves or something with his cyber friends, so I don't hold out much hope.

And yes, I see the irony of complaining about that on an online forum

DeFluffy · 07/07/2010 21:12

i only found out newcastle was on the right of the uk earlier, i always thought it was on the left

so

newcastle
liverpool
nottingham
birmingham
luton
london
southampton
brighton

wastingaway · 07/07/2010 21:15

Bitter MN is a parenting forum, and therefore classes as housework.

Defluff, that's worse than mine.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 07/07/2010 21:15

I think in my head Newcastle is a bit north of Manchester -that's not right, is it?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/07/2010 21:16
