TOO MUCH CALPOL

i posted a comment a while ago on someone s thread about a friend who gave her dd 3 tablespoons of calpol to get her to sleep and people posted back that it was dangerous (as they should and i agree) but the problem is, is that shes still doing it! she lets her swig from the bottle and gives her 20mil ect. her dd is only 2 years old. ive told her over and over again that shes going to harm her daughter but she says "shes used to it" or "it wont do her any harm" and more recently shes actually handed her dd the bottle and said "lets make auntie xxx cross" ffs

i need advice of what to say/do because even if she seems fine after taking the calpol it could be doing her long term damage! ive seen her do it 3 times in the last week

Huggy's not posted tonight since 6ish.

Slow down here, everyone. Paracetamol is effectively harmless in the under 5s as they do not have the metabolic pathway which goes pear-shaped in adults with paracetamol ODs. No child has died in England and Wales for more than ten years from paracetamol.

hopefully lockets.

Obviously no medicine should ever be abused, which is what it happening here. However I don't think it could be regarded as being a 'life or death' situation.

An honest word with the health visitor is in order, I think.

Flossam · 23/05/2005 23:26

I'm sorry but who the hell are you? Why change your name for a post like this. This woman is giving a child medication that she does not need. Frequently. If a child has not died in 10 years it is most probably because letting a child guzzel paracetamol out of a bottle night after night is thankfully not a common occurance, and one that can be treated by health professionals. This quote below tells you all you need to know really -

"This is not to say that vigilance in safety in the use of paracetamol products where children are concerned should be relaxed in any way. "

This is not a 'usual' case of paracetamol overdose, rather a sustained attack for want of a better word. The fact that anyone is appearing to try and defend or excuse this womans actions has made me more cross than I think I have ever been on MN.

While we're talking about abusing medicines, I want to just mention the absolute stupidity of adults taking both ibuprofen and paracetamol, which is something I have seen recommended on this site.

As pointed out below, even just double the normal does can kill. Tolerance to paracetamol varies widely, so for a significant proportion of the population even a small mistake in dosage can prove fatal.

Probably the easiest way to make a mistake in dosing paracetamol is to try and take both it and ibuprofen at the same time, and then become confused as to how much of which you have taken. Could happen to anyone.

So don't do it.

Ditto Flossam. I'm speechless.

TodayOnly · 23/05/2005 23:32

'TodayOnly' because I'm a male who has only stumbled across this site, and have no intention of posting here again!

Just going to say so myself Lockets - we were advised to give both together when we couldn't get ds2's temp down after repeated 4hrly dosing of Calpol.

Gobbledigook · 23/05/2005 23:34

This person is a Troll who knows F all. Ignore him/it please. I am a qualified staff nurse and I have been handing out paracetamol and ibuprofen as a way of keeping my patients pain free for many years now. To suggest that the public shouldn't be able to do this in case they get confused is unlikely and condescending and basically a load of bull. Get a life and get off of here.

JoolsToo · 23/05/2005 23:40
