Glad you had a nice soak OJ.

Very at the night nurse nodding off....we've all done it but if she was so far gone that she didn't awake as you came in or called her name then it is not on. I take it this was not one of the usual team of night carers??

Sending you a big hug.

RTKangaMummy · 30/04/2008 11:50

I am and @ the night nurse

I hope you get somewhere with the agency ~ I would request that you don't want to have her overnight again

Hope you all have a good day and Steve has some cake and trifle

Miaou · 30/04/2008 11:57

Glad you enjoyed your bath OJ. I had a soak in Badedas last night (Christmas pressie from dd1) and it was luuuurvely

onlyjoking9329 · 30/04/2008 11:59

The postman has just been
THANKYOU NAB Steves eyes lit up when i showed him the birds trifle
i guess i will just have to have another soak in the bath with my new posh bubbles and i suppose i could eat yummy chocolate whilst in the bath or i could let the kids have the chocolate
Mac nurse just rang she is coming out to see us on saturday morning.

Klaw · 30/04/2008 12:01

I make choclate cake with mandarins and usually put some of the juice in the cake mixture. So, OJ, can you share with me the recipe you use to make your choc orange cake, please?

These cakes have become a tradition for family birthdays and I'm always looking for ways to improve....

Anyone want some Scottish Tablet?

NotABanana · 30/04/2008 12:05

My pleasure.

Share the chocolate! Biggest piece for you.

Sorry it wasn't more

Hope you enjoy it all anyway.

Nab your gift is very special and has put a smile on our face today and that is pretty damn priceless really, thankyou for making us smile.

NotABanana · 30/04/2008 12:46

Aw, that is lovely.

Thank you.

Miaou · 30/04/2008 12:51

Oooooh I can almost smell it now ... mmm delicious!

Klaw · 30/04/2008 12:53

Thanks OJ, duly saved for a rainy day!

HUGS!

MsBombastic · 30/04/2008 13:15

My best wishes to you and your family OJ.

Don't know if you are fussy about your rum but FYI Sainsbury's currently has Bacardi reduced to £10 a bottle (from £15). Have been told that Bacardi is not a PC rum, but I love the stuff.

The choc orange cake sounds fab - my ds (12) is mad about cooking desserts. Recent successes include James Martin's Raspberry and vodka jelly terrine with lime syrup!

mammyjo · 30/04/2008 14:32

Just checking in for today. Hope you are having a better day today OJ Thinking of you xxx

Thanks for the recipe too, sounds delicious, no wonder it gets eaten so quickly!!

Tickle · 30/04/2008 16:35

ooh choc orange cake looks delish

Hope you have a peaceful evening at Trifle Towers

NotABanana · 30/04/2008 18:30

How has your day been, OJ?

onlyjoking9329 · 30/04/2008 19:08
NotABanana · 30/04/2008 19:09

All sounds lovely.

Except for having to get rid of the sleeper. Didn't she know her job?

FAQ · 30/04/2008 19:12

Don't feel guilty, as someone else said I think most of us that have ever worked nights have had a couple of minutes "shut eye", but if she was that far gone she didn't hear you call her name definitely not on.

onlyjoking9329 · 30/04/2008 19:58

i didn't feel guilty for long, maybe they will put her on days with another family

ChutneyMary · 30/04/2008 20:02

Completely unacceptable to have a carer who doesn't wake if you say her name.... you did the right thing. There's no point having these folk in your home if they're not taking some of the burden from you.

I'll post my recipe for choc orange cake too if you like - it's the nigella one with a jar of marmalade in it. Very subtle and gorgeous. Must pop downstairs to get it. Your version looks delicious and a bit like the chocolate version of the LDC

Hope you have a peaceful night my lovely XXX

ObviouslyTheProblemIsMine · 30/04/2008 20:24

Can't wait to try the cake !! Doesn't it use eggs or does the milk give it moisture ?

Hope you and yours have a good night xx

onlyjoking9329 · 30/04/2008 20:51

oh dear i missed the eggs out
here it is with the eggs

choc orange cake
4oz marg
5oz SR flour
1oz cocoa
1 level teaspoon baking powder
6oz sugar
2 eggs
4 tablespoons milk
rind of 1 large orange

mix everything together put in high sided 2lb cake tin bake 180 for 30 mins.
leave cake in the tin to cool down make loads of holes in the cake with a fork and pour the topping over leave it to soak in and put more on, then leave it to set, if you are lucky

for the stuff to put on top
juice of 1 large orange
4-5 oz icing sugar
just mix together, you can add some cocoa if you like.

robinpud · 30/04/2008 22:25

That looks yummy OJ. I love the Nigella one with a jar of marmalade in and a bar of good chocolate. Yours looks similar and I'll try it tomorrow when I have finished work as I have an excess of eggs.

I think you did the right thing with the night carer.. you might even have done them a favour in the long term as they probably aren't really cut out for this type of work and better to find out before anything untoward happens.

Hope the sugar score is high again tonight and tomorrow.
