This flu virus has hit us really bad! Extremely tired and nauseous

Hi everyone,

My daughter and I have both been fighting a viral infection been to the gp twice last week for daughter and I went to see the gp for myself this Monday.

We both initially had the following symptoms:
High fever-feeling very hot especially the ears like they are blocked and under pressure
Chills and body aches
No apetitie- daughter vomited the first day
Runny nose
Baring cough

Daughter has started eating again recently but she still has a runny nose passing out dark yellow mucus and the cough is still there.

I suffered from severe sharp cheek and headpains like electric shock going into my mouth gp said I have sinusitis due to nasal congestion. I still have a runny nose and a barking cough she is now making my centre chest hurt.
not only that i feel extremely tired and have no energy to do basic things. My appetite is close to zero hardly can eat anything as I feel so full, been burping, having abdominal cramps and smelly stools. There is a weird taste and smell of rusting metal and mucus in my mouth
Did a covid test which was negative. Gp says no need for antibiotics as this is a viral infection most likely flu. But I have had cold before a flu many years ago but this is horrendous I feel like absolute wreck and feeling really down from being ill for the past 8 days now. I am on the verge of just vomiting and my heart has been skipping and doing extra beats (ectopic beats)a lot more since I have been ill. This is so so bad. Anyone going through a similar thing?

Yes I have 4 boys and all of them have been suffering with similar- really high fevers, no appetite, awful coughs, nasal congestion, my son vomited when I tried to move him from his bed to the couch. My mum also has it but somehow I have managed to avoid it. I had flu a few years ago and was so unwell for about 3 weeks and it doesn’t feel quite as bad as that so I’m not sure if they have mild flu or if it’s something else! Whatever it is it’s nasty. They are pale as anything with hardly any energy. Hope you feel better really soon!

WorriedMumZZ · 21/12/2022 12:38

Yes exactly the same!! Me and my little boy have it 😔

@Brandybucks how long have your boys had fevers? My son had sky high fevers of nearly 40 for a day or so, it went away and now it’s creeping back again. Doctors not interested, he’s also on antibiotics for tonsillitis

Magenta65 · 21/12/2022 12:43

I’m exactly the same, sister and DP also now recovering after 10 days. I’ve been unwell for around 10 days but still sick feeling, congested with a cough and raging temperatures

pastypirate · 21/12/2022 12:47

Yep I've had on off fever of 42. Chest feels awful loads of junk. Cough so bad it feels like c section recovery. Permanent nausea. I've had the fecking flu jab and it's floored me for over a week I had to get signed off work and I'm never ill!!

FestiveAF · 21/12/2022 13:02

Covid

FestiveAF · 21/12/2022 13:02

Covid

My thoughts exactly. Are none of you testing?

Seeriously · 21/12/2022 13:32

I have this as well. Am almost 2 weeks in. Symptoms much better but left with crippling fatigue and congestion and poor appetite.
my kids have most likely had this in various degrees over the past 4 weeks.
loads of it going around.

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 14:50

So sorry that everyone has been ill, sorry couldn't reply individually, but I have testes twice for covid last Wednesday and then yesterday and both times the result is negative.
I had covid in Dec 2020 I was very unwell could not stop vomiting and was in A&E as I was dehydrated. However, I recovered quick after 6 days with covid. But this is taking so long its 9 days now and I just feel so crap and have zero appetite. The congestion in my nose just keeps building up and now have a raging headache. Everything smells and tastes so strong and weird, but I don't know if this is a new strain of covid or really bad flu. It's just that I am lucky that it's the school holidays because otherwise I would need a sick note from the gp as going to work would be a mission. I did miss out on 4 days of work prior to the start of the Christmas holidays but had no choice as thats when all this started and I had a fever for 4 days running with my daughter as well.

She feel like utter rubbish and constantly trying to divert my mind because all I can think of is being physically sick like I want to vomit. It's only when I started sharing my views and reading other people threads that exhaustion and nausea are ongoing people are still recovering after 3 weeks.

I might order PCR test for covid. The lateral flow tests are coming up negative. Having said that gp thinks its flu which I know can cause very similar symptoms.
Daughter is still coughing and her nose is runny with yellow mucus on day 10

Don't see any specific pattern people who have been vaccinated against covid and/or had the flu jab are still getting very ill
in london where I live for the past 1 month many many people have been ill with similar symptoms. A close friend said she is ok but her both boys are really ill.

My mum and sister-in-law were both unwell. However, for many people the recovery is a slow process and symptoms are lingering on

OP posts:
YellowHpok · 21/12/2022 14:57

I have similar but not as bad. I am vaccinated for flu and think it's probably flu but not as bad as some due to vaccine. Feel like death.

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 15:03

@YellowHpok Thanks for your message. I had both vaccines for covid, was planning to get the flu jab for my daughter and myself but then we both got suddenly sick last week.
Having said my daughter had a very bad runny nose last month- children do catch viruses very easily from school. There are children constantly unwell in her year group

I can only take fruit right now such as grapes, banana and oranges, but not sure if having citrus /acidic based fruits is ok right now,but my stomach can't handle meals right now. Looking at meals makes me nauseous so only fruits, crackers and fluids are tolerable

peachgreen · 21/12/2022 15:09

DD and I are similar. I eventually got a positive Covid. She’s still testing negative.

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 15:13

@peachgreen Hope you and your daughter get well soon. Did you test with pcr test? After having many days did a positive show up.
It's because I tested last Wednesday (second day of being ill) and then I tested yesterday (8th day) both results were negative on lateral flow tests.

OP posts:
peachgreen · 21/12/2022 15:18

Lateral flow – it showed up on day 4, 5 and 6 but has always been very faint – I suspect it will be negative tomorrow. But it’s definitely Covid.

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 15:22

@peachgreen
That makes sense, it could be covid with myself and daughter. But oh my gosh does it really knock you out. Seriously started hallucinating when I had the fever 4 days ago and saying things which made no sense. Seriously it's always during December that I have been ill.

kirstyrx · 21/12/2022 18:22

I have the same thing atm I ended up in hospital because I couldn’t control my temperature was really poorly still am. I test r positive for the flu but oh my I’ve never had flu like this before. Bad abdo pain, sharp pains in random parts of my body and I’ve never experienced the severe fatigue and weakness like it before. My 6 year old is just starting to get it im a single mum so hopefully I recover before he gets bad :( get well soon

Magenta65 · 21/12/2022 19:38

Tested x5 for covid and all negative

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 20:07

@kirstyrx
Sorry to hear you have been so unwell. Hope you make a recovery soon. Yeah don't understand why it's so bad this time. I have had flu and colds before but this is never ending and I feel so congested my chest nose and mouth all hurt. Also the fatigue is unbelievable. Hope your son remains safe and healthy. It's very difficult especially if you are the main person they are relying on. Many well wishes for you.

OP posts:
Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 20:11

@Magenta65

How are you feeling now?
Do you think it's really bad flu then?
Seriously hoping we all find the recovery that we need. Can't believe Christmas holidays started with this.
From my side it's been me, my daughter, my niece, nephew, mum and sister-in-law & maternal cousin all have been affected either by flu or covid. We didn't meet up at all recently so have been catching it from either work or school

alsonotmyname · 21/12/2022 20:14

3 weeks in and although I'm mostly back to normal I still have a mucus cough and sore throat, fed up of feeling ill

alsonotmyname · 21/12/2022 20:15

Oh and my Covid tests were negative

tedgran · 21/12/2022 20:21

DH started with thus on Sunday, temperature, aching, sneezing, coughing feeling sick. All flu symptoms, we've both had flu jabs . He now has a chest infection, saw Dr this morning and now on antibiotics. Covid test was negative. So far I've avoided it, but had to cancel going to DDs for Christmas 😒

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 20:22

@alsonotmyname
That is a long time 3 weeks, I am on day 9 and have a runny nose with mucus and barking cough. Just need to have more will power that it will take time to get back to normal.
Hope you feel better soon

OP posts:
Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 20:30

@tedgran
Hoping he feels better with the antibiotics. That's really sad about the cancellation, but this is the unexpected. Our health is the main priority so wishing him a full recovery and many well wishes to your family.

Tomorrow is our 10 year wedding anniversary but we had to cancel the plans because both me and daughter are still unwell. DH is fine but trying his best not to catch anything at the moment.
