This flu virus has hit us really bad! Extremely tired and nauseous

Hi everyone,

My daughter and I have both been fighting a viral infection been to the gp twice last week for daughter and I went to see the gp for myself this Monday.

We both initially had the following symptoms:
High fever-feeling very hot especially the ears like they are blocked and under pressure
Chills and body aches
No apetitie- daughter vomited the first day
Runny nose
Baring cough

Daughter has started eating again recently but she still has a runny nose passing out dark yellow mucus and the cough is still there.

I suffered from severe sharp cheek and headpains like electric shock going into my mouth gp said I have sinusitis due to nasal congestion. I still have a runny nose and a barking cough she is now making my centre chest hurt.
not only that i feel extremely tired and have no energy to do basic things. My appetite is close to zero hardly can eat anything as I feel so full, been burping, having abdominal cramps and smelly stools. There is a weird taste and smell of rusting metal and mucus in my mouth
Did a covid test which was negative. Gp says no need for antibiotics as this is a viral infection most likely flu. But I have had cold before a flu many years ago but this is horrendous I feel like absolute wreck and feeling really down from being ill for the past 8 days now. I am on the verge of just vomiting and my heart has been skipping and doing extra beats (ectopic beats)a lot more since I have been ill. This is so so bad. Anyone going through a similar thing?

Hi, I have been poorly for 17 days now 😔 feeling extremely nauseous,headaches and coughing alot. My son had it first but he recovered after a week I just can't seem to shift this 😒 I have covid tested 3 times all negative (does feel similar as had it twice before) but this is 100% worse I've cried so much because I honestly can't remember what feeling normal feels like lol going to go back doctors today because I think I need something to help shift whatever this is. I did get perscribed anti sickness meds but they made me very sleepy which isn't practical with a 2 year old to look after 🙈 hope you all feel better soon aswell.

fUNNYfACE36 · 28/12/2022 06:58

I don't know why you felt you needed so many (3) GP appointments for the flu.what did you expect them to do?

catsnthat · 28/12/2022 07:04

What we have noticed and it's perhaps anecdotal, is we don't know anyone that got sick in 2020 prior to the vaccine. But now we are noticing that most of our friends n acquaintances are constantly sick after the covid jabs. There is a concern that the vaccine has affected people's immune system. It's also affecting kids in vaccinated households. There was a debate last week in parliament about it but somehow did not make the news.

Lots of people are saying this, but I remember when it first hit the news properly about covid in feb 2020, loads of people were saying "oh I was really ill in December with this awful flu like virus, I reckon it was covid" and when I look at my Facebook memories over the last ten years it's full of posts about how ill everyone is. I had one from ten years ago this week saying "we need a no entry/exit sign on this town, I've never known so many people with the lurgy, it's like the days of the plague!" So it's quite clear this is peak time for horrible colds and flu to be doing the rounds.

I think because for nearly 3 years all we've thought about is covid we've forgotten about everything else (plus because of lockdowns/masks etc over the last couple of winters lots of us haven't had colds, I definitely haven't) so it's a shock to the system when they all come flooding back.

Bighugs88 · 28/12/2022 09:14

@Elisha12345
So sorry to hear that you are unwell. I completely agree with you about not knowing how normal feels like when you been ill fo so long. I have started getting my appetite back but it took around 15 days. However, still feel tired and have minimal energy, plus ribs hurt from all the coughing. Hope you feel better soon.

@fUNNYfACE36
The 3 gp appointments were not for me I saw the gp only once. The appointments were for my 5 yr old daughter she was ill at the same time as me. After sending a request regarding her symptoms the gp wanted to see her to rule out scarlet fever, strep A and make sure her basic observations were normal (breating and heart rate & tonsils & body temp etc). Also she finds it difficult to explain how she is feeling as she is on the autism spectrum. I rather take her to the gp which was the better option than running to A&E (which was not needed as it was not an emergency). And she ended up with antibiotics from the gp as from the viral infection she developed a chest infection.

Bighugs88 I'm exactly the same I am managing to eat but still feel very sick (bit less today than yesterday) still not sleeping much so definetly feel tired aswell and got awful earache so I'm off to the doctors at 2 I'm praying they can help 17 days of feeling so poorly is taking its toll. Hope your back to your normal self very soon aswell 😊

Elisha12345 · 28/12/2022 20:23

Well I'm glad I went back to the doctors as I have a chest and ear infection 😩 on some strong antibiotics for 7 days so fingers crossed these work 🤞.

Lemonademoney · 28/12/2022 20:26

My boys have had all of this except the temperature… two out of three seem to be on the mend today but they’ve been napping on and off for the past week which is not like them at all!! One of mine gets a bit foggy brained when he is poorly and I could really tell yesterday.

larry55 · 28/12/2022 21:00

Dh and I developed flu on 18th and 19th December but by Christmas Day he had to see the out of hours Gp as he kept going to sleep and then waking himself up by not actually being able to breathe. I have been to drs today and have also got a chest infection and antibiotics. I last had flu over 40 years ago and I have to say this dose of flu is much worse than the dose of covid I had earlier in the year.
We have both had all our vaccines as we are both over 70. What was the point.

Nothingbuttheglory · 28/12/2022 21:07

@larry55 You might have been much sicker without the vaccines. Get well soon.

Elisha12345 · 29/12/2022 05:51

Larry55 I hope u make a speedy recovery aswell. Can I ask do you feel extremely nauseous? I can't seem to shift it 😕 but now I'm on antibiotics I'm hoping it's going to help 🙏

Elisha12345 · 29/12/2022 07:40

Bighugs88 can I ask when your nausea feeling started to go? I'm on day 18 and yesterday didn't feel 2 sicky but today woke feeling nauseous seems to ease a day then spring back.

Kalasbyxor · 29/12/2022 08:02

Elisha, re the nausea: I was such from the start of December, and was completely bedbound, unable to do anything apart from hobbling across to the loo. The fatigue was extreme.

After 15 days in bed I began to feel a little better, and that's when the nausea became noticeable as I was able to move around a bit. I'd get the full room-spinning, disoriented dizziness whenever I put my head down after sitting up. A GP friend said it's most likely to do with crystals in the inner ear (which help govern balance and proprioception) becoming displaced which is apparently common after a long period of lying down when ill. It has settled down a bit, but I'm careful not to lie my head flat or on a too low pillow, as that's when it seems to start. There are re-balancing exercises online which help too.

LillyLeaf · 29/12/2022 08:22

I'm really confused as to what I have. I started with colds/coughs from the start of December which have never gone than caught whatever my mum had and started feeling sick and weak on boxing day. I've been vomiting for the last 3 nights, still feel weak and a bit achy, no fever, banging fuzzy headache and cough is still lingering. I guess I've just had back to back colds then this which is awful, but I can't deal with this for another 2 weeks. I haven't eaten since Xmas day, except a few slices of toast (that came up again) not sure how long this can go on for.

larry55 · 29/12/2022 08:45

{ don't feel really sick but al I have been eating since Christmas Eve is biscuit and an occasional slice of toast. My main problem is that when I cough I have a very severe pain in my stomach muscles which feels like someone is pulling a wound apart. We are going through the fridge shortly to clear out the left over Christmas food. All the turkey I have managed was half a small slice on Christmas Day!

Elisha12345 · 29/12/2022 09:55

Oh gosh it really does seem like alot of people have been suffering this winter 😭 it's nice to know I ain't alone because I am abit of a panicky, anxious person so was getting very worried. Yesterday day (17) I was still getting the chills/body aches luckily today I seem ok but that's how this flu seems to be 1 day feel okish the next back to horrible symptoms 😢 obviously I know I have a chest infection and ear infection aswell now so I'm just praying my antibiotics work and I never want to get whatever this is again 🤦🏻‍♀️hoping you get better ASAP lillyleaf the banging head is something that I've had the whole time (apart from today not as bad).

Bighugs88 · 29/12/2022 22:08

@Elisha12345
My appetite was back around on day 15/16, however there were times throughout the day (days 4 to 14) where I would feel better and then after 2 hours or so the nausea kicked back in with abdominal cramps. I am not sure but I think the reason could possibly be that as I had sinusitis and a lot of nasal mucus my sense of smell and taste was really off. When the nasal congestion cleared up my appetite has come back. Being nauseous is very unpleasant you do have my sympathy it's a horrible sensation that doesn't budge. I wanted to reassure you that once you start to feel better your appetite will gradually return and the nausea will go. However, from all the coughing I still do have random pain all around my chest especially near the lower ribs at the front and upper back especially when moving around, touching the ribs is not painful it's like the pain is on movement inside somewhere could be strained muscles.
Hope you feel better soon, take care x

Still struggling with the nausea on day 16. Don't think I will ever enjoy a cup of tea again milk sets it right off!

Bighugs88 · 29/12/2022 22:19

@pastypirate
I am so sorry to hear that you have been unwell. There have been many cases of either flu or covid spreading really fast in households. A week after when my daughter and me were will, my cousin called and said he, his wife and 2 children are all unwell. Don't know why it's been so horrendous and the recovery period has been very long.

When I had really bad nasal congestion my mum said to me cut back on the milk as that could trigger it, don't know if that is the case, but I also love drinking tea but couldn't drink much at the beginning of the illness. Praying that you feel better soon and hoping the nausea eases off for you soon x

Elisha12345 · 30/12/2022 07:07

Day 19 for my and the nausea was their a tiny bit this morning but eased fairly quick I'm praying this is the antibiotics working 🤞 I do however still have a very bad head I think due to coughing 🙄 but my appetite is starting to get better so thats something.pastypirate I have only now just been able to start drinking tea but it definetly doesn't taste the best and I did try a coffee (normally a coffee drinker lol) but that was horrendous 🤢 bighugs88 I definetly still keep getting the random tummy pains (almost like a stitch) and the chest pains to let's hope that we r very near the end this has 100% been the most ill I've ever been in my life I never want whatever this flu thing is again 🙄 hope your completely better soon aswell x

Justellingthetruth · 30/12/2022 08:25

@Bighugs88

sorry to say I had it too.

takes three weeks

and I still cough alittle.

but every day alittle better

Elisha12345 · 30/12/2022 08:31

I'm nearly at 3 weeks (still coughing) but starting to feel better finally 🙌 I am on antibiotics though for a chest infection so hopefully that's helping 🤞did any ones flu or whatever this virus is start with bad tummy pains and feeling extremely sick? Me and my 7 year old both got the bad tummy pains and feeling sick to start then a few days later the flu symptoms appeared luckily my 7 year old recovered after a week.

GettingStuffed · 30/12/2022 20:29

I've the same symptoms. I'm on antibiotics as I have managed to get both a chest infection and a viral infection at the same time. I'm on massive doses of antibiotics and I'm starting to improve. Now D H needs to pick his prescription up and hopeful we'll be well by NYE.

If you're chest rattles see your GP

Elisha12345 · 31/12/2022 07:41

I'm the same currently on strong antibiotics 4 days into them and definetly improving finally after nearly 3 weeks 🙄 still coughing and got a massive headache that doesn't seem to want to go in a hurry.

Elisha12345 · 01/01/2023 18:56

Hope everyone is feeling better now 🤞 x

Bighugs88 · 01/01/2023 21:06

@Elisha12345

Happy new year, I am much better now the cough and ribs pain has gone, but have become quite tired and weak which I am not surprised about after being ill for over 2 weeks. Daughter had completed course of antibiotics and she is better as well. Hopefully she will be back at school from Wednesday.
How are you now?
