This flu virus has hit us really bad! Extremely tired and nauseous

Hi everyone,

My daughter and I have both been fighting a viral infection been to the gp twice last week for daughter and I went to see the gp for myself this Monday.

We both initially had the following symptoms:
High fever-feeling very hot especially the ears like they are blocked and under pressure
Chills and body aches
No apetitie- daughter vomited the first day
Runny nose
Baring cough

Daughter has started eating again recently but she still has a runny nose passing out dark yellow mucus and the cough is still there.

I suffered from severe sharp cheek and headpains like electric shock going into my mouth gp said I have sinusitis due to nasal congestion. I still have a runny nose and a barking cough she is now making my centre chest hurt.
not only that i feel extremely tired and have no energy to do basic things. My appetite is close to zero hardly can eat anything as I feel so full, been burping, having abdominal cramps and smelly stools. There is a weird taste and smell of rusting metal and mucus in my mouth
Did a covid test which was negative. Gp says no need for antibiotics as this is a viral infection most likely flu. But I have had cold before a flu many years ago but this is horrendous I feel like absolute wreck and feeling really down from being ill for the past 8 days now. I am on the verge of just vomiting and my heart has been skipping and doing extra beats (ectopic beats)a lot more since I have been ill. This is so so bad. Anyone going through a similar thing?

The thing is, I've heard covid is damaging people's immune system. So I can see why people are suffering more with regular cold/flu like they never did before.

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 20:34

@grapehyacinthisactuallyblue
This could well be the case, also a few people who I know were saying that also probably due to lock down in 2020 & 2021 and going through covid our immune system is not that strong anymore to tackle colds and other viruses that efficiently anymore. Who knows 😫but it's very bad and tiring 😥

I tested positive for COVID yesterday. I had it in Jan 2021 before I was vaccinated and it was a walk in the park compared to how I'm feeling now. Bunged up nose, heavy cough, no appetite, nausea and muscle pains.

I feeling thoroughly miserable, my DH is doing all the Christmas stuff with his parents whilst I'm stuck in my sick bed.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 21/12/2022 21:25

From what I've read, it's nothing to do with lockdown. Just because we aren't exposed to regular virus, doesn't make you suddenly weak against it. So it's a myth. And I believe it. On the other hand, covid damaging people's immune system, I believe, because evidence is there. But we won't know for sure, until there are concrete evidence.

KangarooKenny · 21/12/2022 21:26

Friend of mine is ill with sinusitis and tested positive today.

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 21:41

@HIC2020

Hope you feel better soon. It's horrible I have very similar symptoms like yours also with sinusitis and overall weakness

@KangarooKenny
Hope your friend makes a healthy recovery. Sending well wishes

@grapehyacinthisactuallyblue
It's interesting that you mentioned this because thinking about it now prior to covid which I had in 2020 I was hardly ill for a long time with colds etc. Since 2020 I had both jabs for covid and I clearly remember catching a cold twice within 5 weeks in march and may 2022 which took a good 12 days to get better and now this. So you might be right about covid affecting the immune system. I just pray that anyone suffering with viral infection & illnesses make a healthy recovery.

Sorry, I've misunderstood your comment, OP. My responce was not nice. I've asked MNHQ to delete my comment.

YourTruthorMine · 21/12/2022 22:07

Yes, me and my son both, barking coughs, fever, diminished appetite. not flu though, but very nasty. Mine's been going on for 3 weeks, started as a mild cold and has got steadily worse

Panic71 · 21/12/2022 22:07

I have been the same - it’s horrible BUT we are terrible at following basic get well guidelines in this day and age. Rest is so important, fluids and ice etc food isn’t that important initially. But rest rest rest!

Bighugs88 · 21/12/2022 22:54

@grapehyacinthisactuallyblue

It's alright, misunderstandings can happen. I was saying in my previous post that I do agree with you about Covid.

Hope you guys recover soon. Yes I agree about rest and I think our bodies definitely does need this. Have been trying to do some basic house work in the past 2 days but by the late afternoon I am completely knocked out and feel very tired and so I just take a nap. Been through a lot in the past couple of days and still have very bad symptoms so I am resting whenever I can

I’m on day 7/8.

Initially had a really high temp with a really fast heartbeat. Fitbit kept sending me alerts about how high my HR was at rest. My chest has been burning, a god awful sore throat with congestion and nausea. On antibiotics now for a chest infection. I am over the worst but I am feeling utterly exhausted. I’ve tested every day for covid and it’s negative. This is the flu. Unfortunately people think it’s only covid that can make you feel really poorly these days.

bakingmads · 22/12/2022 11:51

What we have noticed and it's perhaps anecdotal, is we don't know anyone that got sick in 2020 prior to the vaccine. But now we are noticing that most of our friends n acquaintances are constantly sick after the covid jabs. There is a concern that the vaccine has affected people's immune system. It's also affecting kids in vaccinated households. There was a debate last week in parliament about it but somehow did not make the news.

So sorry you are feeling unwell. Perhaps it would be a good idea to boost your immune system with high quality Vitamin C and D and some nice chicken soup. Hope u feel better soon.

Jewel1968 · 22/12/2022 12:01

Have had covid recently (last couple of months) and now have flu (according to doc). Flu is 100 times worse than covid. I did a COVID test just to be sure and it was negative. I did read somewhere that there is a strange hybrid doing the rounds - a mix of covid and flu -which might explain it although my understanding of science is not good enough to know whether that is likely or not.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2022 12:12

You need to book flu jabs early, the pharmacies do them from september and you can book middle of august online in a lot of places.

DarkKarmaIlama · 22/12/2022 12:13

@Fluffycloudland77

oh believe me I’ve learnt my lesson.

Khara · 22/12/2022 12:36

My dh has just tested positive for covid, ironically as he's now feeling a bit better and went back to work this morning only to test positive there. He's been ill since Monday but several lfts done at home were negative. He's had shivers and a cough and been quite unwell - it's almost unheard for him to be off sick.

Shooshan · 22/12/2022 12:40

I have it.

Day 6 and only just on the upturn.

However EXTREMELY tired and cannot do anything for more than 5 mins without having to sit.

My house is a tip. And I mean that by R standards, not MN standards 😂
Piles of dirty washing everywhere. Bathroom is grotesque.

Not a single gift wrapped.

I feel so guilty. I just can't move

Shooshan · 22/12/2022 12:42

My temp was 39.9 a few days ago and my heart rate was 'dangerously high'

Managed to avoid A&E though.

I think my heart rate is still quite fast though. I can feel it when I lay down

Im paying attention to this man. He is well qualified to comment.
I hope you all feel better soon 🌺

CreatingHavoc · 22/12/2022 17:00

Day 8 here, still feeling bloody awful. Paracetamol helps me get through the day atm but I've been taking it for 8 days now. I have yellow snot, sinus pressure, nausea, fevers coming and going like no tomorrow and my bowels are not happy either. No idea if it's covid but I did a test earlier and had a line so faint I'm not even sure it was there. I'll do another later.

Bighugs88 · 22/12/2022 19:39

@CreatingHavoc @Khara

Hope you guys get better soon. I am on day 10 now. Starting to have a prominent smell of mucus in my mouth and nose. Had to get a few things went with husband in the car but there was so much traffic on the road due to christmas shopping that I actually asked my husband to stop and park the car in a safe place so I could get out for some fresh air the nausea is really bad and feel very dizzy and spaced out.
Managed to have coco pops for breakfast, a sandwich and apple today, small bites it's like I am forcing my self to eat as I just don't have an appetite and keep gagging.

@Shooshan

How are you feeling now?
My usual resting heart rate is around 76-84bpm, but since being ill my resting HR is around 94to98 bpm gp said it's ok still within normal. I do suffer from ectopic (PAC) beat daily which was diagnosed during the summer after having an echocardiogram and 24 hr ecg monitor on, was informed this is not a dangerous arrthymia as my heart is healthy in strucutre but things like diet and stress can increase ectopic beats . However, since having this viral infection my ectopics are more prominent each day and as I am resting a lot more during the day I can feel my heart flutter in my chest , coughing helps to stop this.

@Useyourfork
Thank you for the link, I will have a look. Thanks for your wishes x

I am really struggling with the nausea at the moment. Temp shot up at tea time and I've not eaten since lunchtime. Chills yet hot. I have quite bad anxiety and it's gone in to overdrive and I'm pretty much having a panic attack now.

My daughter is poorly too so I'm sleeping in her room with her to keep an eye on her. It's just awful.

Bighugs88 · 23/12/2022 21:42

@bakingmads
Thank you for your kind words and support means a lot. Gp also mentioned about taking a multivitamin to help boost immunity.
Gp has prescribed antibiotics for my daughter as the gp was concerned that she might have a slight chest infection as he was listening to her cough and said it's quite prominent in her respiratory tract. So she has been given a 5 day course of antibiotics.
The nausea is slightly less today thank God, but still have a lingering tickly barking cough.
