This flu virus has hit us really bad! Extremely tired and nauseous

Hi everyone,

My daughter and I have both been fighting a viral infection been to the gp twice last week for daughter and I went to see the gp for myself this Monday.

We both initially had the following symptoms:
High fever-feeling very hot especially the ears like they are blocked and under pressure
Chills and body aches
No apetitie- daughter vomited the first day
Runny nose
Baring cough

Daughter has started eating again recently but she still has a runny nose passing out dark yellow mucus and the cough is still there.

I suffered from severe sharp cheek and headpains like electric shock going into my mouth gp said I have sinusitis due to nasal congestion. I still have a runny nose and a barking cough she is now making my centre chest hurt.
not only that i feel extremely tired and have no energy to do basic things. My appetite is close to zero hardly can eat anything as I feel so full, been burping, having abdominal cramps and smelly stools. There is a weird taste and smell of rusting metal and mucus in my mouth
Did a covid test which was negative. Gp says no need for antibiotics as this is a viral infection most likely flu. But I have had cold before a flu many years ago but this is horrendous I feel like absolute wreck and feeling really down from being ill for the past 8 days now. I am on the verge of just vomiting and my heart has been skipping and doing extra beats (ectopic beats)a lot more since I have been ill. This is so so bad. Anyone going through a similar thing?

I'm finally starting to feel normal again after nearly 3 weeks still been getting slight nausea though it seems to go and then come back 🤦🏻‍♀️ still got 2 more days on my antibiotics so hoping after them I will be good 🤞 definetly been the most poorly I've ever been 😔 happy new year to u aswell and here's to a healthy 2023 x

Darklane · 02/01/2023 00:34

I’ve had this for just over two weeks now & it's getting worse rather than better.
same symptoms as most of you, feeling sick, no appetite, head feels like it’s bursting it’s so blocked up, yet nose running constantly, dreadful cough. Hardly slept because of the constant wracking cough that makes me sick with the stuff coming out. Suspect it’s turning into a chest infection. If you’re on antibiotics, how did you get to see your GP. Ours is still saying any Covid/ flu like symptoms stay away. Had the flu jab back in early October, just let us in through the back door to see the nurse, it’s still like Fort Knox our surgery.

Bighugs88 · 02/01/2023 02:53

@Darklane

Sorry to hear that you are unwell, due to the duration and severity of the symptoms my daughter was prescribed antibiotics via the gp as the viral infection then lead to a chest infection and she wasn't getting better prior to the antibiotics she was on calpol. My gp surgery you have to fill an online form then the clinician will decide during the telephone call if you need to be seen face-to-face. Due to a lot of people being ill with viruses like flu, strep A, covid- the gp wanted to make sure my daughter was OK and didn't have strep A, rash, basic observations (heart & breathing) were ok. However, I was wearing a face mask.

I know rules and procedures are different for various surgeries. It's best to get yourself checked out by the gp. It does take time I was ill and recovered after 2.5 weeks. Hope you recover soon, look after yourself x

Thank you. Glad you are starting to feel a bit better, hope your daughter is soon on the mend. If this cough doesn’t start to clear I’ll try ringing the surgery when it reopens after New Year. Take care.

OlleOskiFelle · 02/01/2023 08:11

I'm going to a walk in today.
I'm still throwing up, haven't eaten a thing in 4 days, in pain and my breathing isn't great which is a worry as I have brittle asthma.
I'm slightly terrified that they'll try to admit me to hospital.

Brandybucks · 21/12/2022 09:57

Yes I have 4 boys and all of them have been suffering with similar- really high fevers, no appetite, awful coughs, nasal congestion, my son vomited when I tried to move him from his bed to the couch. My mum also has it but somehow I have managed to avoid it. I had flu a few years ago and was so unwell for about 3 weeks and it doesn’t feel quite as bad as that so I’m not sure if they have mild flu or if it’s something else! Whatever it is it’s nasty. They are pale as anything with hardly any energy. Hope you feel better really soon!

"It doesn't feel quite as bad as that" .No, because you haven't got it!!!

Brandybucks · 02/01/2023 09:28

@fUNNYfACE36 blimey. Bit of an overreaction.

Elisha12345 · 02/01/2023 10:04

Sorry your feeling crappy darklane 😔 I I've had it 3 weeks and only now improving and I'm on antibiotics because it started with flu and then I got a chest infection and a ear infection I've had exactly the same symptoms as you the coughing is finally easing but I didn't sleep for like a week 🙄 definetly sounds like you need antibiotics aswell hopefully the doctors can sort you out 🤞

larry55 · 02/01/2023 13:57

I am finally starting to feel a little better. I have finished the antibiotics I was given last week but still don't feel hungry. Dh is working his way through all the Christmas food so if I have lost weight because of this illness I won't put it all back on eating the Christmas goodies.

I am still coughing a lot and think I have torn a muscle in my lower abdomen - best description is it being like the healing of a caesarean scar - so sleeping at night is very difficult. I slept downstairs on the sofa for a couple of nights so I could easily bend to protect my abdomen when I coughed. I found it agony to move in bed.

Looking out at the sunshine now it would be lovely to go for a walk but I just don't have the energy. Fortunately I don't have my dgs here for childcare until Thursday so I hope I will be able to take him to school otherwise dh will have to take him.

Bighugs88 · 02/01/2023 16:40

@larry55

Sending you well wishes, the last symptoms for me were the nausea and dry barking cough. I am so sorry that you are having very bad abdominal pain. I also had abdominal pain but for me it felt like someone squeezing my stomach like when you have eaten something that has really upset your stomach. This lasted for a week with the cough.
With the cough I ended up having pain around my chest and upper back.
I hope you find some relief soon and recover, its absolutely awful & has made my anxiety really worse.

@OlleOskiFelle
How are you feeling now?
Vomiting can make a person very weak, tired & lead to rib and muscle pain. I know gp surgeries are closed today as it's bank holiday. If you are very unwell it's best to get seen by urgent care /walk in at hospital. Hope you feel better soon x

I’ve got a milder version of this. Vomited last night, headache, stomach cramps, metal mouth and utter exhaustion.
I’m testing neg on LFT and vax against flu, so can only assume it’s a virus. No cough for me but the vomit is highly unusual for me - not the way I normally get ill at all.

Elisha12345 · 02/01/2023 17:03

The headache and nausea is definetly lingering for me (3 weeks in) and nearly done a course of antibiotics whatever this flu thing is I'm terrified of ever getting it again I've had covid 3 times (once when pregnant) but this has been much worse 😔 x

LapinR0se · 02/01/2023 17:24

I woke up 24th December with a rattle hoarse voice and sore throat. Kept myself going but felt crap all day. Xmas day had aches and pains all over then my nose and eyes started streaming like a tap. Ended up in bed 5pm Xmas day with a fever of 39,9.
Boxing sat through to 28th I cannot remember. At some point my mum got my an emergency GP appointment at outpatients in the hospital. He diagnosed bronchitis and put me on amoxicillin and an inhaler.
now I still have tonnes and tonnes of green mucus and phlegm, an itchy throat and croaky voice. I have zero sense of smell and a very small appetite.
3 x antigen tests negative.

starstartwo · 03/01/2023 13:52

I went down with it Boxing Day. Had sickness, nausea, shivers, on and off temp, coughing up gunk and exhaustion. Went to docs and all turned into a chest infection. No anti-b's as stats ok. I've got asthma so feel awful. My 7 year old has had it on and off for a month. My other son has developed a headache and sore throat today. It's a persistent virus. I can't remember when we were all well and it's getting me down!

LapinR0se · 03/01/2023 14:32

Im on round two of antibiotics now - amoxicillin didn’t clear it up so started clarythromycin today. Also the doctor has put me on a cough suppressant because I cannot sleep and also piss myself every time I have a coughing fit

starstartwo · 03/01/2023 14:47

DS had antibiotics. Helped the cough a little but he's still got bright green coming out of his nose 3 weeks after the antibiotics 😩

Elisha12345 · 03/01/2023 17:22

My turned in to a chest infection and got put on doxycycline just finished my last 1 today still light headed in and off stomach cramps and bring up Flem but definetly feel better hopefully stays that way as I can honestly say I've never been so ill before 😫 I was also coughing so much I was wetting myself abit 🙈 the cough kept me up for a week but luckily that has definetly eased just the odd tickly cough now and again I hope you all feel better soon 🤞 I'm now 3 weeks in and definetly still not 100% x

Jewel1968 · 03/01/2023 20:13

@Elisha12345 almost identical story here. Last antibiotic today. Started to improve the first day I started them (and steroids) and am now a little worried I might take a step back. I am also finding it psychologically difficult. Very depressing. Groundhog Day. Every day trapped in a haze of exhaustion.

Elisha12345 · 03/01/2023 20:17

Honestly jewel1968 I'm exactly the same I honestly do think since being so unwell I went into abit of depression and now I'm absolutely petrified of getting this poorly again 😫 my son goes back to school tomorrow and I'm dreading I've been taking vitamin c so I'm hoping thats gave my immune system abit of a boost 🤞

Elisha12345 · 03/01/2023 20:25

Has any one been having horrendous night sweats? Last few nights I've been waking up like I've just stepped out the bath tub 🙈 it's horrible I always get these when I'm unwell but now I'm feeling more human hopefully they stop 🤞

LapinR0se · 03/01/2023 20:29

Yes, a few nights during this illness I had a dream I was swimming or drowning and when I woke up my pjs and hair and bedsheets were absolutely soaked through

Elisha12345 · 03/01/2023 20:48

Yes thats exactly what I have been getting last 3 nights have been awful hopefully it stops 🤞 dread going to bed

Elisha12345 · 05/01/2023 06:59

Hope every1 is now on the mend 😊 I was just curious if any 1 has had the dizziness linger on after 3 weeks it's not like bad dizzy just abit wobbly (best way to describe it)

Starrr123 · 15/01/2023 18:27

@Bighugs88 how are you now ? Ive had it since boxing day. Felt a little better then poorly again with then sicky. Awful headaches and facial pain :( x

Bighugs88 · 15/01/2023 18:58

@Starrr123

I am better now, have recovered and so has DD. We were both ill for 2 weeks beginning of the Christmas holidays. Daughter was given antibiotics as she had a chest infection and I just took painkillers whennecessary but I was given a mild nasal steroid spray to help ease congestion in the nose. But yes I had sinusitis and the facial pain was really bad and very sharp. Hope you feel better soon. A few people have mentioned that they slightly felt better and then fell ill again. There are so many viruses about x
Try some vicks steam, this really helped with the sinusitis
