gallstone diet

Hi have already posted re my gallstones. I have been trying to follow a low fat diet but not sure how low to go. Do I have to cut out fat completely (don't you need some fat for certain body functions)or is there a set percentage I can have.
I assume vegetable better than animal?
I like things like cheese and mayo are there any decent alternatives or do I accept can't have.

Hopefully the 10 year old could do some of the lifting of the youngest and I guess you just have to avoid situations that require the 4 year old to be lifted. I had back problems when pregnant with dd2 so couldn't lift dd1 who was 18 months and we had a lot of picnics in the front room! Could be worth having your childminder take the two youngest over night for a couple of nights but you have them in the day. I would start looking now at what lifting you do each day and what you can avoid. Get groceries delivered too cos you aren't allowed to carry bags. Or hang out laundry either I was told!

RBH · 26/06/2007 19:27

Where in Somerset are you by the way?

sassygirl33 · 26/06/2007 19:36

Had another attack today, scared the life out of DD who is 2. I had tuna pasta for lunch, thought it would be fine! I rang NHS direct and they told me to ring my GP, totally unhelpful. I feel totally knackered now, the attack knocks it out of me totally. I am meant to be going back to work tomorrow after being off for 4 days???? I wonder what triggered it this time? Possibly the mayonnaise?

tortoise · 26/06/2007 20:03

RBH- i am in castle cary. Thats a good idea re lifting.I will look at that. What about walking/buggy pushing? I would have to find someone to do school/pre-school runs if it was term time. I think the CM would be happy to have DD's.Not sure how much she would charge. Last time she had them all for me while i went to new school intake evening for DD1 and didn't want paying.

Sassygirl- Sorry you had another attack too. Have you got anything to take? Would recomment the pethidine tablets. I am not sure i would take them during the day though.
My Dd1 was very upset when i had the attack last monday.

tortoise · 26/06/2007 20:31

Grrrr i want to eat a piece of DS's cake that they made. Am rather peckish tonight despite eating marsh mallows and jelly! (Not together)

tortoise · 26/06/2007 21:22

I resisted the cake but pain is just starting up again. Mild like last night at the moment.
I think i am going to have to make an appointment with my Dr.

RBH · 26/06/2007 21:28

Tortoise, go to the doctor! Honestly however much of a pain no lifting for 10 days is it will be nothing on having recurring gallstone attacks. I am near Radstock so when you are fixed we can go to Frome and eat the award winning ice cream they apparently have!

Hope it doesn't get too bad tonight. Thinking of you.

tortoise · 26/06/2007 21:35

Thanks RBH.
Think i will jut go to bed.

We went to frome recently to shop in Lidls! Only 20mins by train. Went to Junction 21 a while ago too. DC all loved that!

sassygirl33 · 27/06/2007 07:52

so depressed right now, I can't live like this. My poor kids, they just don't understand why I am wailing through these attacks. All I want to do afterwards is sleep. I might need to go back to the docs. I was given zoton to reduce the acid in my stomach??? and buscopan when I have an attack - as it is an anti spasmodic??

tortoise · 27/06/2007 12:42

Hi sassygirl33. Sorry to hear you are feeling the same as i feel. I think you need some strong painkillers like i have but you may have to wait until scan has shown gall stones.

Luckily attack last night stayed mild and went quite quickly with heat on it!

I just don't want to eat. So scared that i will have another attack. Had a banana for breakfast and slim fast shake for lunch cos that's all i had left in the fridge! Not particularly low fat though.

I have no idea what to have for dinner. Quorn sausages and cous cous maybe? i think thats pretty low fat but i'm not sure without looking!

sassygirl33 · 27/06/2007 13:05

Hi Tortoise

Sorry to hear about your attack last night - I just know that pain. Can I ask - when you get the attacks, do you get pain in your stomach to the right? I never do, just feel it in the centre of my stomach. I have been signed off for 2 weeks by doc today, I just keep crying all the time, it is so upsetting. She has prescribed me another med today - DICYCLOVERINE, for colic pain? It is getting ridiculous now. At least I have some time off now - not sure that helps much though. I thought my lunch was low fat yesterday, but obviously not low fat enough. hospital doc suggested a high carbs no fat diet, doc today said to cut out all rubbish, fats, sugars everything.

I hope your dinner is nice tonight

tortoise · 27/06/2007 13:11

I get the pain more in the centre too and at its worst it goes across my back and shoulders too.
I am glad you got signed off work.
All the 1st dr i saw said was low fat diet like every should have anyway!! Not much help!! I did have an appointment wioth the dietitian but it was during half term so i cancelled it. Have phoned a few times now but no new appointment.
I hope your new tabs help.

tortoise · 28/06/2007 22:05

How are you doing today?
I am feeling drained and lacking energy. i expect i am not eating properly. i don't know what to have.
No pain last night or today so far!

sassygirl33 · 28/06/2007 22:16

so far so good today - I am with you with not knowing what to eat. I had a jacket potato with chilli con carne and cheese, I even had oven pizza today, and am fine. I haven't started the new meds yet - apparently it is to stop colic??? I haven't had a chocolate bar for ages now, it feels so strange! I just feel low and depressed with it all, worrying when the next attack will happen and if I am out picking up the kids from school, or if my kids will see me in pain and can't help me??

How far are you in the process now - I know you have had a scan but are you going to have surgery??

tortoise · 28/06/2007 22:19

Glad you are doing ok today.

When i last spoke to my dr he said to go back and see him if i start getting more attacks ie at least one a month! then he will refer me for surgery.

I haven't been to see him yet! Am too worried about it all at the moment. I know i need to though.

tortoise · 28/06/2007 22:20

My Tablets are only for stopping the pain once its started. No meds can prevent an attack afaik.

sassygirl33 · 28/06/2007 22:23

She has prescribed me Merbentyl?? I have to take them 3 times a day? When I took buscopan during an attack, it was difficult to know if they worked, as the attack was an hour or so, and the tabs would take a while to kick in?

sassygirl33 · 28/06/2007 22:25

My first ever attack was at the beginning of May and then nothing for a month. Since then I have had 4 bad attacks. I saw a lady who works in my local chemist and she said she had had her gallbladder removed - said she only ever had 3 attacks

tortoise · 28/06/2007 22:28

I have no idea! Did she say what the tablets would do or is she assuming its just bad wind?
Maybe you will get better help once the scan has been done.
I don't eat if i have to go somewhere just in case. Or i have just a banana or apple which shouldn't cause any problems.

My 4 DC have seen most of the attacks so far. DD1 said to me the other night 'last time your tummy hurt Mummy, i cried'. She did too. DS's are more understanding because they are older. DS1 has been asking what happens during the op. And asking where the gall bladder is.

Am off to have a bath and get to bed now. Should really have gone hours ago!

tortoise · 28/06/2007 22:30

My 1st attack would of been April time alhough i now think i had two attacks during pregnacy.
Have had 3 more bad attacks since then. Worst one lasting 3+ hours.

sassygirl33 · 28/06/2007 22:38

I think my doc is just trying me on anything in the hope it helps??? I am now thinking I might not have gallstones and that it is something really serious??? which is why I am feeling so low I suppose. Perhaps when this is all over we can enjoy a massive fatty meal together, lol!!

tortoise · 28/06/2007 22:44

I worried like that before having the scan. I think its only natural to worry.
Look forward to the big fatty meal one day soon.

Have had my bath and am off to bed now.

sassygirl33 · 28/06/2007 22:47

Hope you have a good nights sleep - pain free! Have just had more pizza, fingers crossed for me tonight. It's also very strange, I never get attacks at night

sassygirl33 · 30/06/2007 11:19

No pain here so far, which kind of makes me lean towards the theory of "diet has no effect on gallstones"???? I have had a few niggles and feelings of potential attacks, but luckily nothing yet? Haven't even started the meds yet

How is everyone else doing???

tortoise · 30/06/2007 17:30

Hi sassygirl.
I have been ok so far. but am keeping to generally low fat stuff. And snacking on fat free marshmallows.

I am planning on have homemade chips with pizza tonight so we will see how that goes. I know i have been ok with it so far but i feel attacks are more likely at the moment after the last 2.

Glad to hear you have been ok too. What day is your scan?
