Hi have already posted re my gallstones. I have been trying to follow a low fat diet but not sure how low to go. Do I have to cut out fat completely (don't you need some fat for certain body functions)or is there a set percentage I can have.
I assume vegetable better than animal?
I like things like cheese and mayo are there any decent alternatives or do I accept can't have.

Info here about liver diet!

sassygirl33 · 05/07/2007 22:38

I am relieved, as the first doc I saw told me that my symptoms didn't sound at all like gallstones(although I had already researched it all) and now I can prove her wrong. Have to make an appt to to see the doc in 10 days when the results get sent back to her - I have no idea why they can't just be given to the patient!!! Saves a lot of time and hassle

tortoise · 05/07/2007 22:41

Thats what i had to do. the only thing i was told was that most people have them with no problems so scan doesn't 100% prove thats what is causing the pain.

Had a choc binge this afternoon. 4 bars since 3.30pm. All down to having money probs and feeling low. Reached for the choc.

sassygirl33 · 05/07/2007 22:58

Well I don't believe what you were told, it is obvious that is what is causing your pain. I haven't had chocolate since my attack 3 weeks back, but soooooo want it. I would just hassle your GP for an answer.

tortoise · 05/07/2007 22:59

I think Dr now agrees thats whats causing it. Other Dr is crap!
This was the 1st choc i have had for a few weeks too.

sassygirl33 · 06/07/2007 12:30

I.WANT.CHOCOLATE

tortoise · 06/07/2007 13:36

Oh dear sassy.
I can't see one small bar hurting! I was ok after all i had yesterday.

sassygirl33 · 06/07/2007 17:39

It's just - the last time I had a chocolate bar and a bag of cashews I had a really bad attack??? So I suppose that is what put's me off. I had some gorgeous sushi today though - only 1.1g of fat!!!

sherbert · 08/07/2007 09:19

gosh, this thread is timely. I was diagnosed with gallstones on Wednesday. I am going to see GP tomorrow to discuss the results. I am lucky in that I have private health insurance through work, so hopefully wont have to wait to long. What is the recovery time like.?

sassygirl33 · 08/07/2007 15:55

Hi Sherbert

Welcome to Gallstone city, lol!! I don't know what the recovery time is, I believe from some of the ladies here, it isn't very long. I have 3 kids so there is no way I can be out of action for very long anyway. Do you have kids? How bad are your attacks?

sherbert · 08/07/2007 17:54

I have two boys, 1 and 5.
The attacks can be pretty bad. They almost always come on in the middle of the night and dont seem to particulary related to what i have eaten. I had one last night , but as soon as i noticed the twinges I took pain killers so it wasnt too bad. Doesnt seem particulary related to what I ahve eaten, last night had Gammon for dinner (not overly fatty) and had an attack. Last week I made beef Stroganoff (very fatty, with butter, sourcream etc) no problems.

sherbert · 08/07/2007 17:55

I seem to have an almost constant back ache though and the attacks are becoming more frequent.

sassygirl33 · 08/07/2007 18:15

Hi Sherbet

I can relate about the constant backache. On my scan, the lady was looking at my side, just above my hips and I mentioned she might see the cysts on my ovaries - she said she wasn't looking at my ovaries???? She spent a good period of time looking though???? I get pain there a lot, and assumed it was my cysts and it seems cyclical. I am fed up watching everything I eat, just had some crisps and hoping I will be alright.

tortoise · 08/07/2007 19:51

Hi sherbert. Sorry to see you are suffering too. its horrible isn't it.
I have been ok for a while now. Am hoping that continues! Had quite a fatty tea tonight so will see how i go!

I have a terrible cold though. Almost tempted to take a pethidine tab to help me sleep! lol!

Babyramone · 08/07/2007 20:31

Welcome Sherbet.
Before I got dianosed I'd always thought gallstones where an old persons disease, how wrong was I!!!

Got text today from my friend telling me she's been taken in suffring from severe pain and was diagnosed with gall stones this afternoon.
She'd had a couple of attacks but was told was some spasm thingy. When she described the pain I was suspicious it was gall stones.
She's to get surgery and is joking we can be theatre buddies (if only)but I wouldn't be surprised if she get's done while there.
I'm also hoping for quick easy recovery.
Funny but I get an achey back too.

About 30 mins from me. I haven't taken my 4 DC yet. Its somewhere i would love to take them.

sherbert · 09/07/2007 10:59

Well went to see my GP this morning , diagnosis confirmed . Called consultant and have an appointment for this afternoon. (wow) My insurance states if there is more than 6 week NHS waiting list I can go private. I am sure there is a a 6 week NHS waiting list for this sort of thing (and everything else)

sassygirl33 · 09/07/2007 12:10

That is excellent Sherbert. When I saw the doctor at the hospital - even he suggested I got a scan privately as the wait would have been ridiculous. My local private hospital quoted me £258. Luckily, after a bit of sobbing, I got an appt reducted from 6-8 weeks, to 2. I so wish I had private medical insurance now though. Let us know how it goes this afternoon

sassygirl33 · 10/07/2007 19:33

I just ate a chinese takeaway ate about 5.45 - still waiting for the pain - I know, I deserve it, I just couldn't resist!

Nothing yet

tortoise · 10/07/2007 19:38

Hi sassy. The pain may not come!

I saw a dietitian yesterday. She wasn't that much help really but i do now understand why the low fat diet is recommended!
I have definatly lost weight. Am now into the size 14 jeans i bought ages ago! very pleased.
