New thread for old friends and for new quitters ...

OP posts:
RoundTheBend · 27/12/2006 23:17

I would like to join please!

Decided that putting on 2 stone, getting a chest infection (and STILL trying to smoke) is not good for my health, so I am hoping by December 31st I will be feeling better and definitely able to stop smoking.

lou33 · 27/12/2006 23:22

you know my breathing has never been worse since i stopped smoking

i thought it was from overindulgence, which is why i quit, but now i can hardly breathe morning and evening times

i think i need to go to the doc

SparklyXmasKat · 27/12/2006 23:30

I will be giving up on january 1st...

imaginaryfriend · 28/12/2006 19:07

Come and join RTB and SXK!

Lou, do you have asthma at all? I do and I've always found that immediately on quitting my asthma gets slightly worse, but only for a very short time then I find my chest is wonderfully clear. No horrible rattling cough and generally I need my inhalers very little. When I'm smoking I get very tight and wheezy no matter how much I use the steroid inhaler. If you don't have asthma, if I were you, I'd see the GP because I've never heard of someone getting a bad chest after quitting. Maybe you've got a residual infection or something?

ifriend-nice to be an old friend

imaginaryfriend · 28/12/2006 21:12

Not just that, sheepy, but friend with a RL face I can remember! Happy new year - how are you?

OP posts:
prettyfly1 · 28/12/2006 21:16

i would just like to say good luck to all those quitting for 2007. i quit a year ago today and i wont lie to you, its been a bit of a rollercoaster, especially for the first few months but the financial and health rewards are great and the feeling of looking in the mirror knowing you conquered an addiction known to be as strong as heroin and far more socially acceptable is great as well as knowing you are setting a great example to your kids!!!!! Just remember that if you fall off the wagon (which i have twice) get back on straight away - no guilt and no punishment- just get on!!!

Good luck

Hello Ill be heading towards my 3rd year

red37 · 28/12/2006 21:29

Can my dh join?
I am desperate for him to quit.

charliecat · 28/12/2006 21:30

Oh yes that would be fine...get him to do some reading at whyquit.com

imaginaryfriend · 28/12/2006 21:40

Fantastic, prettyfly. I'm 4.5 months in now and even though I have long weeks of not even thinking once about fags now I still have an odd day here or there when I feel it would be VERY easy to slide back into it. Nowhere near in the clear yet!

3 years, cc, wow, nearly as old as dd! She goes full time to school in January

red, get your dh a MN name and get him to join in here! We've got another bloke around, pann, although I think he may be wallowing in an ashtray as I write ...

Just popped in to wish you all good luck in your quest! I have been fag free for 6 years as xmas eve just gone... you can do it!

imaginaryfriend · 28/12/2006 22:26

spooky, 6 years! You must never think of fags now then?

OP posts:
babalon · 28/12/2006 22:28

Hi I'll be popping in from time to time if thats ok. I gave up smoking on 8th march 06 and apart from 3 drunken fags since having ds2 I think I've done well but recently I feel the cravings again

I don't want to relapse.

Good luck for new year quitters

SpookyMadMummy · 29/12/2006 07:57

Imaginaryfriend.. I do occasionally think of fags... I get a whiff and could KILL for one! but then I remember the 6 years of hard work and decide its not worth going through the hassle of quitting again

lou33 · 29/12/2006 18:03

IF, i used to have asthma years ago

i went to the doc today , last night i was sticking my head out of my window at 4am desperately trying to breathe, he's given me 2 inhalers to use 4 times a day

blossomsmine · 30/12/2006 00:26

I wish I could give up but i just don't have the will power I smoke 20 a day and have tried in the past with zyban but it was awful, any tips?

lou33 · 30/12/2006 01:39

i woke up one morning and couldnt breathe properly, which was my incentive

charliecat · 30/12/2006 17:35

blossomsmine, have your brain reprogrammed about the way you view fags.
whyquit.com
Read it till you can chant it out backwards(I can and ive stopped over 2 years now)
Understand your enemy.

Laughs out Loud, but its not funny really, you do need to understand WHY it is you keep going back for more, seemingly on a self destruct mission.
Understand it and you can fight it with ammo.
Come back and let me know what you think.

HEY CUSTARDO....you here yet?????

blossomsmine · 30/12/2006 17:51

Thanks for that charliecat. Can't look at it now too many jobs to do but later tonight when everyones in bed i will be def taking a look. Will let you know, glad it helped you.

charliecat · 30/12/2006 17:52

Oh theres at least a full weeks worth of reading there..no rush

charliecat · 02/01/2007 16:10

Hello, any newbies from yesterday?

ledodgy · 02/01/2007 16:23

Ok can i join? I'm stopping once this packet of tobacco is finished (I smoke rollies). I stopped whilst pregnant and bf two children but started again after I stopped bf both times. I'm lucky in that for me it's a habit, an excuse for a break iyswim I don't wake up and crave a fag and if I haven't got any I will go all day without one. However I need to quit now as I won't remain this lucky for long. In a way not having a physical addiction and being able to take them or leave them is more dangerous because I keep putting off quitting for good because up until now I can stop at any time. However it's stupid and I need to stop once and for all! I am going to find it hard as I go outside to smoke and it's my little break during the day it's the associations i'll have a problem with so I need to make new associations.

charliecat · 02/01/2007 16:26

Ha...you go outside in this weather for a break??? Your mad
Your right though, its a dangerous mindset, at least when your stuffing in 40 a day and you can feel yourself counting the seconds till you can choke on another you cant kid yourself its ok.
Sounds liek you will have it easier than most if you can go all day without one.
Drown the rest of your baccy and start afresh tommorow

ledodgy · 02/01/2007 16:28

Thank You I will do.
