New thread for old friends and for new quitters ...

OP posts:
Ulysees · 21/01/2007 21:48

good to hear there's more of us fagless ones.

Bucketsofdynomite · 21/01/2007 21:55

Also wanted to say an extra well done to those whose DPs are still smoking at home (even in the garden), I've found that the biggest hurdle on previous attempts. Just had a quick look at the whyquit site, some good stuff to print out and stick up around the house for them (but officially for you .
If your other half doesn't smoke you can always be smug about quitting for their benefit (because it really is revolting kissing someone who's been smoking.)

charliecat · 21/01/2007 22:00

Hi everyone...glads theres so many of us beating the fag into the kerb
For those quitting with a partner...its YOUR quit youve really got to worry about, so if your quitting partner comes in reeking of fags, THAT IS NO EXCUSE for you to join them.
They deserve your pity, they failed. YOU HAVE NOT. Stay strong and when they are ready, they will rejoin you, but DO NOT let someone else having a fag let your nicotine monster convince you that you must have one too.
Need to Stop whyquit.com
Southeastastra Please come and visit us. you need a kick up the arse to quit.
You wont get it hiding away And thanks got thinking of me the other day
How far South East are you BTW? Im in Kent.

southeastastra · 21/01/2007 22:06

im in south herts, near watford.

i think i'm never going to be able to quit.

MusicLover · 21/01/2007 22:13

WEll this is the third time Ive quit, & gotta say it gets easier, you have to get your head around it though first or else its no good. Last time we did it for 7 months, was so proud. then we gave in when we had a drink one night. Took another 18 months to start quitting again.
Determined this time!

Good on you all.
Go for it, to those who are thinking about it

lou33 · 21/01/2007 22:15

8 weeks 2 days

charliecat · 21/01/2007 22:16

Do you have a VCR sea?

charliecat · 21/01/2007 22:18

Its ALL about getting your head round it Theres fags in the shops, on nearly every street, your neighbours have them. If your really desperate you mihgt even ask the postman.
This is about realising NONE of those fags are for you, not even your best mates. Let her smoke them. They are NOT for you!!!

charliecat · 21/01/2007 22:20

Is smoking getting you down SEA, or is it my stalking you round MN? Sorry.
Once upon a time you used to not smoke. You did, you really really did. Stopping smoking is returning to that lovely time where you didnt have to give where your going to cram another fag into your day.

southeastastra · 21/01/2007 22:23

i was 17 what happened to me? i smoked one fag too many, i blame my friend sam who told me i wasn't smoking properly.

cc you are the only one who nags me about it i really do appreciate it.

i have a vcr hehe hope everything is going ok with you at home

charliecat · 21/01/2007 22:26

It is thanks Right, i have an allen carr video. Do you want it? In fact no. I AM going to send it to you. email me your address. [email protected]
My sister smoked, and I said I will drop this round on friday afternoon, open your mind....you know, shes never smoked since

I have watched it about 3 times and weeped, for the truth it holds. But weak I am, and I didnt stop smoking, but it rattled in my head, and wouldnt go away. And im stopped now.
Thats and whyquit and this thread. Sorted.

southeastastra · 21/01/2007 22:35

thanks cc, i do think people underestimate how hard it is to give up

persephonesnape · 21/01/2007 23:02

three weeks tomorrow for me ( gosh! haven't posted in this thread for ages!) I'm on zyban and paul mckenna (I've tried patches, gum, lozenges and micro tabs before..)

pal mckenna book is half price in whsmiths btw - it's even just good for the relaxation on the CD - I do feel awfully crabby and tense still. but i know I'm doing the best thing and i do now regard everyone who smokes as weak and stupid , so i have been successfully brainwashed.

Ulysees · 22/01/2007 09:33

pers well done

SEA you will do it hun. Better that than be nagged to death

MusicLover · 29/01/2007 14:59

Still finding it hard at times, but determined to carry it on.

imaginaryfriend · 01/02/2007 22:53

Sorry I haven't been around, I've moved house and been living in chaos for a few weeks. I'll try to be back a bit more now.

Hello cc my old chum!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 04/02/2007 12:10

hello IF i was wondering where you'd got to! hanging season for smokers on mn

NotMeForThis · 04/02/2007 22:20

Ok. It's day 1. Changed my name for this because I hate to admit that I even am (was?) a smoker. Only DH knows.

ButternutSquash · 05/02/2007 10:42

Please help me and remind me why I shouldn't be smoking!

I've been trying to quit for a couple of years now, I usually manage a few months and then succumb again, usually after a party where I have a few puffs. Same scenario every time, aaargh!

I have now been smoking again for about a week or so after being fag-free since before Christmas.

I need your support!

scorpio1 · 05/02/2007 11:13

im new! smoked last cigarette on saturday at 7.15pm.

yesterday was fine, finding this morning a bit harder.

what day did everyone else find the hardest? i have to go to uni tomorrow, and i used to smoke there-its more like a social gathering thing to do. it will be hard to continue tomorrow!

im giving up because im ttc

filthymindedvixen · 05/02/2007 13:02

Hello butternut and scoprio - I'm on day 40 (I think) and I'm doing fine. Can I recommend Alan Carr's book? It really does help you look th things from, a different perspective. We know why smoking is a bad idea yet it doesn't stop us.

I found little things like realising how vile and irritable I was with my kids when they were 'preventing' me from an 'overdue' smoke (they didn't know I smoked). So I'd be trying to hide in the garden and the 'mum-see'' would come and I would snarl at them 'for pete's sake, mummy just wants five minutes peace and quiet...is that too much to ask''

when what I really meant was 'FFS, I just need my ciggy..''

Also, I am achieving so much more because previously if I thought I was bored, I'd smoke a cig. Instead of going to find something to do to stop me feelingbored IFSWIM. Then I'd end up smoking more because I was 'bored'. Well, smoking doesn'r relieve boredom, does it

it's just a question of re-programming yourself, rather than thinking ''oh it's so expensive...oh it's so bad for me etc''

Keep on keeping on, and remember, like everything else which is hard, take it one hour at a time, if neccessary.

scorpio1 · 05/02/2007 13:05

ive been doing ALOT of housework today, and everytime i get the fag craving, i have a bit of water or sit down with my 2 year old to play cars....craving goes in a instant then!

i am not giving in, NEVER

filthymindedvixen · 05/02/2007 13:07

yay! that's the spirit! (LOL, my house has never been cleaner...)

charliecat · 05/02/2007 13:10

Well Done you lot OMG IF, youve moved. What floor did you put down?

ButternutSquash · 05/02/2007 13:57

I've read Allen Carr, it works for me in that when I quit I do it cold turkey, and beyond the first few days I don't find it hard to be fag-free.

My problem is not giving up, it's starting again IYSWIM! Every time it's the same thing, I'll have a few puffs on a friend's fag at a party or social gathering, or even a whole ciggie, thinking "I'll be alright, just won't smoke tomorrow" but somehow always end up smoking 20 a day a few days/weeks down the line.

I've done it several times, I must be stupid...
