Mooncup views in RL

I have very recently started using a mooncup and I am really pleased with it (now I have got the hang of it). I want to rave to my friends/family in RL but after telling one friend she was a bit . Just wondering do friends/family in RL know you use a mooncup and would you back up a mooncup if people said it was weird?

I think that most people in RL will never have heard of them, whereas most people on MN will.

Whenever the topics come up, I've talked about it. I've converted several friends. It usually takes some pondering time to let them get over the initial shock. Often they come back later and ask some more about it.

Then a couple of weeks later they find you to say how you've revolutionised their life!

Oh, and yes, I defend it and menstruation generally wholeheartedly. I ask people why they think menstrual blood is so gross/taboo etc, given it happens to 50% of the population at some point and around 30% of the population every month.

(I have many other rants too, people aren't surprised that I get on my soapbox about this!)

I only mention that I use one if menstruation comes up in conversation - so not very often really!

The lt time was at work when someone asked if I had a tampon they could use. I also got the look.

Can I just ask, do they work on really heavy days? And do they ever fall out? Honestly?

And would it traumatise my 3yo who insists on coming to the toilet with me every single time?

I get a lot of leakage, so use washable pads too. Heavy days for me fill the cup every hour.

I thought that was just how it was. It's still preferable to disposables. But, I read something recently that suggested another brand might be better - but I can't remember the brand mentioned.

littlebluedog12 I am usually not too heavy except day 2, which will be today. So far I have had a bit of leakage when I got out of bed, but that doesn't surprise me as I launched myself out and it was quite full. Will see how I get on today, as I have experienced a small problem with leakage before, but I think I have solved this now.
It has never fallen out and I have only ever heard one story of a mooncup falling out, but not sure if that was to do with gynaecological problems?
Not sure I would feel comfortable with one of my kids in with me whilst using the mooncup (but then I am just getting used to using it), it was bad enough when I used pads.

I also wouldn't randomly chat to someone about menstruation, but when I find a good product I find it hard not to rave about it. It's just on this occasion it happens to be a silicone blood collector

I tell everyone about mooncups whenever I can! Not sure if I've converted anyone yet but I'm trying!

For me, they work better than tampons on really heavy days. I can almost twice as long out of a mooncup. Mine has never fallen out although if I strain to do a poo with one in I sometimes feel it being pushed lower. If your three year old is like mine, he or she will wear a clean mooncup as a teeny tiny hat and find it very funny.

Yes I've told people when it comes up in conversation. One said she had a friend that already had one so was open to suggestions. Everyone else has been like WTF. Can only point them in the right direction!!

I have been using the disposable Softcups as a first step, I find them really comfortable (though the size of it horrified me at first but it went in no problem!). It says up to 12 hours use, I suppose like a mooncup I have just emptied it and reinserted.
I bought a Meluna cup, got on alright with it on the 3 days that I've used it so far. I got one with a ring' at the bottom, I probably should have bought the 'stem', I think it would be easier to get it out. However I found the sterilising a bit faffy. I used a small saucepan (which is kept in bedroom cupboard so as not to be confused with others). I do have the microwave sterilising pot but am not to sure about putting it in the microwave where I heat food...do you do this? Am I being too precious? I'm not ridiculously grossed out by period blood, I have a few reusable towels, I wash them with other towels or bedding. Just not sure about putting my mooncup in the microwave?

Based on this thread, last night I bought a sckoon cup - my mooncup is a bit uncomfortable at times, so I wanted to try a softer one, it should arrive tomorrow!

And a browse round the internet suggests there are people who collect menstrual cups in a similar way that some people collect slings!

I sterilize my mooncap by sticking it in a cup of water in the microwave for a few minutes. Have done for a couple of years with no problem.

Discussed it at a playgroup (followed on from discussing reusable nappies). Oddly, more people were grossed out at the idea of reusing sanitary protection than nappies! I'd rather put blood than poo in my washing machine!

I have converted a couple of people, though.

regainingunconsciousness the sckoon looks pretty funky, you will have to let us know how you get on with it. I didn't know there were so many different brands of menstrual cup.
I think microwaving a mooncup in water would be fine raspberryruffle. I wouldn't be worried about the menstrual blood though, as long as it has been washed first, I wouldn't give it a second thought.
I'm not sure why blood is considered worse than poo? It is a bit odd that some mums can't bear the thought of dealing with menstrual blood, but would use reusable nappies.

I don't use one as I'm a bit old but since I read about them on here I think they are awesome and I would definitely stick up for anyone who uses one. I was the only one on my set who used washable nappies back in the day...

Heard about it only online (not Mumsnet) but love it to bits.

Had to go from the b to a model a couple of years back, but other than that no problems at all, AF less painful, less heavy, less fuss! Recommend to everyone, but do get some funny responses!

It's fantastic that so many of us are spreading the love regarding mooncups or any other menstrual cup for that matter
The last few days have been great using the Mooncup, usually at this time of the month I feel a bit manky, but am feeling fresh and so much more comfortable.
I keep updating poor DH on how much I love my Mooncup it is a bit worrying really!
regainingunconsciousness I will check back to see how you are getting on, I wonder how it will compare to the Mooncup
