Mooncup views in RL

I have very recently started using a mooncup and I am really pleased with it (now I have got the hang of it). I want to rave to my friends/family in RL but after telling one friend she was a bit Hmm. Just wondering do friends/family in RL know you use a mooncup and would you back up a mooncup if people said it was weird?

Sckoon cup has arrived. I've got the larger size and it's the same length as the larger mooncup but about a mm less in diameter.

The body is noticeably softer than the mooncup, the rim is slightly softer. The body is really smooth and the little holes are larger than in the mooncup.

However, where the tail bit joins he body of the cup there seems to be a defect inside the cup, like a blister of silicon has broken leaving it thinner, looking like it'll break very easily. I'm going to contact the seller (Sckoon Organically through Amazon) this morning and see if they'll send a replacement. I'm a bit disappointed.

The little bag it comes with is lovely though!

I have converted one friend in RL.

Sanitary protection doesn't often come up in conversation though.

I discovered Mooncups about 4 years ago? And I love it. I wish I had found out about them before I turned 40. All those years wasted on messy pads and uncomfortable/leaky tampons.

If the subject comes up, I evangelise. I did have a slightly weird discussion about it with some colleagues towards the end of the Christmas party. Two of the women have gone out and bought one, and one of my male colleagues persuaded his wife and teenage daughter to get one on the back of my recommendation. I consider that a success!

I am just sorry it took nearly thirty years of menstruation for me to discover them myself...

regainingunconsciousness Oh no that's disappointing hopefully just a one off though, are they sending a replacement?
cece you are definitely not weird, if you are so are all of us (I am a little bit on the strange side though, so perhaps don't count my vote Wink ).
I am starting to feel more proud of going against the grain , must try to hang on to that thought next time the subject comes up.

Sanitary protection isn't really a topic I touch on often, but I was very impressed with my mooncup and wanted to share Blush. When I brought the subject up with my friend we were talking about recycling and being eco friendly...but really any excuse and I would have started blabbing!

I have not really talked to anyone about them in RL. San pro doesn't tend to come up much! I love my meluna soft though. I found a mooncup a bit uncomfortable but my meluna is fantastic. I use cloth pads too. I don't get the heavy ache when I use a cup and/or cloth pads. If I'm on a long shift then I might use a "normal" pad as it is not really practical to store my used cloth pads and the horrible ache comes back. I get pretty heavy periods now so I end up emptying my cup a fair bit but cup plus pad back up is great for when working as I can't guarantee when I'll be able to go to the loo so I know if I use my cup plus a night time pad I can probably last until I get a loo break!

Today's mooncup tip is never to leave your mooncup in a solution of sterilising liquid and forget about it. I went to retrieve mine this morning and found that it had gone a lovely pearly white, and that it had started to dissolve. Luckily, I have a spare.

MostWicked · 19/02/2014 10:35

Blimey! How long had you left it in there? And how string was the solution?
I regularly leave mine to soak overnight. I've left it a whole day before. I've been using the same mooncup for about 12 years.

Gosh I leave mine in the sterilising fluid from one month to the next and have done for about 8 years.

Reading around recently it seems that boiling & sterilising can gradually damage moon cups over time and actually, a wash with soap is all that is needed. Discolouration over time is natural and not a problem.

I'll try to find a link later.

princessalbert · 19/02/2014 11:16

I just give mine a good wash with shampoo and hot water, then put away for next month.

Report
MostWicked · 19/02/2014 12:36

I wash mine when I empty it, then soak it in a mild milton solution before I put it away for the month. Like I said, i've used it every month for over a decade now and this is how I have treated it since I got it. It is showing no signs of wear or deterioration. I'm sure it doesn't need the sterilisation, but I prefer it to look and smell completely fresh.

I boil mine and it always looks better for it. Has a special pit that lives upstairs. Got to have an excuse to try a new type eventually!

Report
addictedtosugar · 19/02/2014 18:08

Mine goes into milton solution for about 30 mins at the end of each period.
No boiling or heating here.

Don't think I've ever started a conversation re menstrual cups (I use a meluna), but a friend did mention them years ago. Took MN, and tampons leaking post DS2 to get me to move tho.

Agree with less cramping, and no pulling feeling with the cup tho

Do any of you have daughters who have periods? My children have only ever seen me use a mooncup and sometimes pads, and I'm not wildly keen on starting my daughter off with tampons when I know how much more comfortable a cup is but it's hard to find info about suitable cups and techniques for younger girls. It's not an issue for me yet as DD is only 7, but I'd like to be prepared.

TheRani, my dd is 12 and I haven't mentioned mooncups to her yet - she hasn't started her periods yet. However, I know Meluna do mini cups in two widths.

I'm not sure my dd would manage a mooncup when first starting out, but when she expresses an interest in tampons I shall suggest she try one.

My 14 year old has tried to use one but she just can't manage it yet .She is desperate to as she has seen how much easier I find my periods since using the moon cup.

I think it would be quite difficult for a young teenage girl to use a mooncup. I remember at 14, trying tampons for the first time, and even they took quite a bit of effort. I started with the slender size and it was some time before I could even manage regular.
After 2 children, I tried the mooncup (having previous used a diaphragm) and the first couple of attempts were quite tricky. I wasn't too sure how to get it out! It didn't take long to master it, but I do think it would be more difficult for a teen who hasn't even had sex.

Thank you for this thread. I bought a mooncup last week, I had one years ago before I had ds6. I'm awaiting first af visit since having my implant out, I've been practicing with it and at the mo can only insert it if I'm lying down Confused
I just googled meluna and liked the look of them, so I've ordered one as well. I never realised there were so many varieties.

Kelper persist a little. My first few attempts were not great - I think I had to squat to get it in and out. You will get there. It was probably 3 months before it became second nature to me, and I haven't looked back since!

Having heard about them here I would like to try but I worry that it'll be too messy.
I have heavy periods and I think the thought of removing the mooncup puts me off a bit in case I spill it everywhere.
TMI.... but I can't even use tampons at the start as the force of the flow kind of pushes them out before they have a chance to expand.
Anyone had this and found a moon cup works for them?

Report
TheRaniOfYawn · 20/02/2014 16:39

There is a learning curve with a cup in much the same way that there is with a tampon so for the first three months or so you might leak or spill because you haven't got the hang of it yet. But cups hold a lot more than tampons so they are generally good if you have av heavy flow. If your cup is full it makes a sort of popping sensation which means you need to change it.
