General election 2024

Election night plans, anyone?

Voter since 1987. I watched the 1997 election in a tiny spare room of a friend on one of those old fashioned black and white tellies where you had to move the arial by hand and search for the station by turning the dial - all that was available.

This time, I'm thinking popcorn and wine. I have the day off the next day. Unlike my husband.

I think there's a Newscast Special planned so I might go for that option.

Anyone else got plans? Snack ideas? Stamina aids?

I'm making popcorn.

I usually try and get a nap in and always watch BBC. My bro usually watches with my and heads out to the 24 hour Costa for coffee and cakes around 3am. We have a nap during the down time 4ish then wake up for the finale.
I did a cheeseboard once but cheese at 2am was no good.
crisps and sweet carbs things are what’s it’s about.

DP is far more invested than I am. He's taken Friday off work (I'm self employed and can work pretty much anywhere/anytime) and we're going away for a few nights starting Thursday evening. He plans to have the rolling news on all night (to be fair I fall asleep to the tv with the sleep timer set and will put it on again if I'm awake in the middle of the night so that doesn't bother me) and has said to expect him to be sluggish on the Friday.

PurpleWhiteGreen123 · 27/06/2024 10:35

I'm on nights so will be following on X.

StripedPiggy · 27/06/2024 10:43

I can’t wait. The exit poll will drop at 10pm and, a few moments later, the Tory party will implode and start tearing itself apart on live TV. It will be a highlight of the year. Then settle in to watch one cabinet minister after another kicked out & made unemployed by their constituents.

The 🍾 🥂will be in the fridge and the 🍿will be ready. A celebratory McDonald’s breakfast at dawn also sounds like a good plan. 😉

adviceatthislatestage · 27/06/2024 10:48

I'm working 6am- 10 at polling station, and my role includes my dropping the ballot box off.

Then it'll be straight home and tv on, mainlining coffee and sugary snacks in the hope I can stay awake- it'll be a 24hr day for me.

Cant wait

Jasmin71 · 27/06/2024 11:27

Takeaway
Exit poll
Fall on floor laughing (hopefully)
Drink !!!
Nap
Channel 4
Around 6am full English with preprepared celebratory playlist.

Can't wait !!

bellinisurge · 27/06/2024 12:39

Planning to get up very early. Go for a nap around 5pm. Get up for the exit poll and watch the fun begin! Hopefully it will be fun.

Champagne and coffee on hand and I like the idea of cake around 3am @BaselineDrop. Might adopt that plan!

TheDarkMonarch · 27/06/2024 13:55

I have the Friday off work so plan on dragging a duvet to the reclining sofa, perhaps a pillow, definately some snacks and then stay awake as long as I can before dosing with the TV on for the rest of the night. A few wake ups to checks what's happened.

I was going to watch C4s coverage but news that Nadine Dorries will be on it may have me switching to Sky instead.

Some serious catch up sleep the next day sometime.

What time does the Clacton count normally finish? I can't stay up all night but will set my alarm so I can watch that live...

I had a quick Google and the BBC had the Clacton result at 3:29am in 2019.

justanotherlaura · 27/06/2024 14:31

I was going to stay up overnight and watch all the coverage, I'm on maternity leave and my first is at childcare all day on the Friday. Now I've been booked in for my section on the Friday so it'll be an early night for my now :(

although at least there'll be something on the telly if I can't sleep for nerves!

usernamealreadytaken · 27/06/2024 15:14

Working at an election count in a marginal seat - should be a fun night!

notgettinganyyounger · 27/06/2024 15:16

I'll be watching all night. Snacks and occasional short naps.
It should be a great night's TV

blackcherryconserve · 27/06/2024 15:17

Lots of coffee and to stay awake at least until 2.00 a.m.

Crikeyalmighty · 27/06/2024 15:20

@Jasmin71 yep that's my night too- provided the Tory's are out of course- otherwise it's early slink to bed at 3 am

mummysherlock · 27/06/2024 15:22

Poll Clerk from 6.15am until however long it takes to tidy up the polling station afterwards.
Then home to pull an all nighter. Have Friday off work

SnapdragonToadflax · 27/06/2024 15:24

I'm staying up. I don't work Fridays, my partner's booked the day off work. We're planning to stay up until it's called. There will be many snacks and coffee.

Will have to get up and get my child to school, but then can come home and nap. Probably head out for a nice lunch before school finishes.

I won't believe it until it's called. But I am hopeful.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 27/06/2024 15:45

I'm going to have drinks and snacks ready with number 1 child who will be back from uni to vote in his first GE. I'm hoping for a tight exit poll so there's lots of drama and excitement!!
Fortunately I don't have to be up early on Friday 😁

fr4zzledmum · 27/06/2024 15:53

I'll be doing the count :)

IFollowRivers · 27/06/2024 16:05

I'm going to a Newscast all nighter when we get locked into BBC radio theatre and watch Laura Kunessberg on a big screen while eating snacks paid for by the licence fee.

I will be a tired mess on Friday.

Cattenberg · 27/06/2024 16:09

Counting (probably all night), then Friday off work to recover. I don’t have a TV anymore but will be interested to read about the results.

BIossomtoes · 27/06/2024 16:34

Up all night. The coffee machine will be very busy. Cake, biscuits and chocolate throughout the night then over to the bakers just across the road for a bacon bap at about 6. No alcohol because it makes me sleepy.
