General election 2024

Election night plans, anyone?

Voter since 1987. I watched the 1997 election in a tiny spare room of a friend on one of those old fashioned black and white tellies where you had to move the arial by hand and search for the station by turning the dial - all that was available.

This time, I'm thinking popcorn and wine. I have the day off the next day. Unlike my husband.

I think there's a Newscast Special planned so I might go for that option.

Anyone else got plans? Snack ideas? Stamina aids?

Touch wood, here goes:

Afternoon/evening nap.
Some crispy aromatic duck.
Irn bru.
Crisps, pretzels, chocolate.
I might make fudge in the quiet bit.
Channel Four coverage plus Mumsnet and TRIP discord.
Sushi bowl and fruit.
Champagne in the fridge.
Wipeout bingo.
Dancing.
Some kind of breakfast sandwich.
Sleep all day.
Football double bill.

@KatPurrson

Not that you've given it much thought......

🤣🤣🤣

Actually, it all just came to me at once about twenty minutes after I spotted the the thread.

That said, I’ve been up late for every big election/vote for over forty years, so this is kind of a finely tuned habit.

@KatPurrson

hopefully see you on one of the many threads 😊

I'm going to get up around 1.00pm, schedule a nap from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, then a combination of Channel4 & Sky news through the night, texting ds the big results as he is going to the Sheffield counts for the night. I will be turning Channel 4 off when Nadine Dorries appears.

I won't bother staying up. No reason to celebrate. Mark my words, Liebour will be 100x worse

Still trotting out that title after all this time?? Probably need to move into the 21st century where the Tories have systematically decimated society, education, the NHS etc etc etc.
We have prom for 1 child, will get them home then stay up as late as we can.
I have the day off but DH will be off into his increasingly (especially the last 14 years) shitty teaching job.
I hope to God we will be celebrating. Can't bear the thought of another morning after Brexit feeling 🍾

Blackcats7 · 28/06/2024 13:02

Me and my cat will be watching all night.
Snacks:
Me - bollinger ready in the fridge, milka strawberry chocolate and walkers salt and vinegar in the cupboard
Cat : Webbox cheese sticks (and will doubtless want some of my crisps too)

verdantverdure · 28/06/2024 13:06

Can everyone please blame our friends if the election gets jinxed. They've just had a case of champagne delivered to my house. Actual champagne.

@OneEdgyFatball

I agree with you, but I'm still going to watch it, because I think it's going to be a lot more interesting than some people think.

if I had the energy I'd take a list of names and see how they're feeling one year in...I very much doubt any of them will be this excited about Labour.

IMO anyone voting Labour doesn't understand they need to hear what they're NOT saying.,

@AmelieTaylor nope, just utterly at the end of our tether with the current shower of vile "leaders".
Spent half my adult life under one, half under the other. Know which government has done the most harm in those times.
Happily voting tactically here. Would normally be a Lib Dem voter, but that risks the Tories stating in.....we live in a very traditionally blue area.

wonderstuff · 28/06/2024 13:10

I’ve got to teach the next day, but I really want to stay up! Definitely like the idea of champagne, but might have to wait until Friday!

We’re all round your place then! 🥂

@verdantverdure - I'm off to majestic on Tuesday - I do feel life is a bit 'on hold' at the moment which I know is daft -

Crikeyalmighty · 28/06/2024 13:52

@OneEdgyFatball nah!! Not saying all problems will instantly be solved, or ever solved, but It's a different vibe - their potential MPs aren't a bunch of bouffant haired , pink shirted spivs for a start- many who are actually quite thick . Underlying Intent of direction is a big thing-

Crikeyalmighty · 28/06/2024 13:54

@greencatbob I did it twice in the 80s as worked for a bank and I agree with you - great vibe to do!

OkyDoke · 28/06/2024 14:08

I can't decide. Got work in the morning so need some sleep.

Thinking stay up to watch the exit polls then get up at 5ish to see where things are?

What are likely to be the key times?

I feel the same way. Can't focus on anything!

I think all Labour voters have a very realistic idea of how tough things are going to be. Some things will go well, some won't.

No one imagines things will turn around in a year. Labour isn't promising that.

But getting rid of this bunch of crooks is something to massively celebrate.

NextFriYAY · 28/06/2024 16:25

Finish work at 8pm (from home)
Shower
Dinner (tbc contents thereof)
G&T
Exit Poll
Trying to ensure the hope doesn’t kill me
Nap
Coffee around 2am
Cake, snacks, coffee
Champage into fridge
Dance as watch the self-serving bastards eat their young
Crack open the fizz when Dimbleby (or version of) calls it (🙏🏻)

Booked Friday off work as soon as the election was called.

I wonder if champagne sales are ticking up across the country?

Hedonism · 28/06/2024 16:38

I'm counting too. We won't finish first but shouldn't be last either, so I will then drive home (40 mins) listening to the rest of the results roll in.

verdantverdure · 28/06/2024 16:40

I'd be interested to know. I'd have been happy with Prosecco @bombastix, or gin, but apparently a proper celebration requires proper champagne Grin

We're invited to three parties the night after too. I hope we're not all being previous.

BIossomtoes · 28/06/2024 16:41

It’s going to feel like a very long wait to 3am to find out if we’ve turned Reform here. 😳

Just booked the Friday off work inspired by this...1997 vibes, I remember going to the count then & the heady days of optimism....

I think we have to get through a week of unpleasantness before we can properly get excited. To be honest I won’t get excited until it’s 4am and loads of Tory strongholds have turned.
