General election 2024

Election night plans, anyone?

Voter since 1987. I watched the 1997 election in a tiny spare room of a friend on one of those old fashioned black and white tellies where you had to move the arial by hand and search for the station by turning the dial - all that was available.

This time, I'm thinking popcorn and wine. I have the day off the next day. Unlike my husband.

I think there's a Newscast Special planned so I might go for that option.

Anyone else got plans? Snack ideas? Stamina aids?

I'm going to a Newscast all nighter when we get locked into BBC radio theatre and watch Laura Kunessberg on a big screen while eating snacks paid for by the licence fee.

I will be a tired mess on Friday.

Envious. How did you swing that?

IFollowRivers · 27/06/2024 16:42

@BIossomtoes just applied for it from the ticket bit of the BBC website. There's loads of free recordings to watch if you don't mind waiting around a bit when you get there.

I won't bother staying up. No reason to celebrate. Mark my words, Liebour will be 100x worse

Well last time they were 100 times better and it's been a long down hill ever since for 90% of people.

I cannot wait. My mate is having people round about 15 of us. Wine, food and celebrations (hopefully).

"Liebour" that's so clever! Brilliantly original!

Are you voting for Farage, who will "reject the influence of the World Economic Forum and cancel Britain's membership of it" by any chance?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/06/2024 17:09

@Jasmin71
Spot on. Just like Eurovision but most likely with more sniggering and laughs.

MrsLeonFarrell · 27/06/2024 17:21

No one in my house is interested and they all go to bed early. I'll be listening to the radio in bed with headphones.

What time will Rees Mogg's result be out?

Are you implying that the Tories are honest?

Planning to get up very early. Go for a nap around 5pm. Get up for the exit poll and watch the fun begin! Hopefully it will be fun.

Champagne and coffee on hand and I like the idea of cake around 3am @BaselineDrop. Might adopt that plan!

Oh I like that idea, I’m more likely to make it through the night if I get a nap in.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 17:33

Put the kids to bed and they WILL be asleep by 7pm! Kick back with a takeaway curry and some fruit ciders and watch BBC coverage. There’s a bottle of champagne we’ve been meaning to drink for a while so that will come out later and I imagine we will stay put on the sofa until we drop off. My entire adult life has been under the Conservatives so it feels like a huge milestone.

Chattygirl123 · 27/06/2024 17:35

I'm going to be on holiday so probably won't be watching the results come in. Only time I sat up through the might was 1997 as I'd only ever known a Conservative government and really wanted a change. I'd finished my degree and had nothing planned for the results day.

verdantverdure · 27/06/2024 20:26

I don't know how long we'll all last but we're having a party.

There's a spreadsheet with suggested celebrations for when Tory MPs are democratically voted out because if we raise a glass for all of them we'll get alcohol poisoning.

I had to veto fireworks for if Nigel Farage and Lee Anderson are defeated.

Foxymoxy68 · 27/06/2024 20:35

It'll be my first experience as a polling clerk so hopefully the adrenaline will still be flowing until Sunderland is announced! Would love to last all night-here's hoping!

mummabubs · 27/06/2024 20:39

DH has taken the day off work on Friday, thankfully that's a non-working day for me anyway. We plan to get wine, cheese, nibbles, olives, the works and celebrate the downfall of the Tories together. It's been a long time coming.

L1ttledrummergirl · 27/06/2024 20:40

I'm off work the next morning, as is ds1. We shall be up all night, I'll have my bingo cards and shots at the ready, and the prosecco on ice.

Kleptronic · 27/06/2024 20:40

I'm womaning a polling station then up all night then off to the big smoke to see Arcade Fire! Gonna be a hell of a ride Grin

BIWI · 27/06/2024 20:44

We're away! I have no idea if we have a telly in our AirBnB, but if not we'll be 'watching' on my iPad. And then will be wrecked the next day, which is our travelling home day.

Looking forward to being away, but gutted that we'll miss the 'usual' election TV watching 'extravagnza'

Greenbather · 27/06/2024 21:04

I have a distraction planned as I will be very excited on 4th July and I find the news blackout on politics on election days very frustrating (but reasonable I know).
So after finishing work I am going to see a play to take my mind off the results.
It should be finished by 10pm but I will be sneaking a look at phone at that point.
Then home for first part of coverage.
Might try and sleep a few hours until say 2.30am.
Then watch coverage (not decided on which channel yet) and hopefully enjoy celebrating some good outcomes.
Lots of snacks, not sure alcohol will be consumed until Friday evening.
Don't work Fridays - ideal!

Silviasilvertoes · 27/06/2024 21:06

I used to do the election count pre-children. Now I say every time that I’m not staying up, then find myself gripping a cup of tea in the early hours saying “one… more… seat…” 🤣

Silviasilvertoes · 27/06/2024 21:08

I do like the idea of election bingo.

chergar · 27/06/2024 21:12

I usually sit up watching but this year I am doing the count, scheduled to finish around 3am

07whatever · 27/06/2024 21:15

I'm a poll clerk so will spend the day doing that.
Come home with a takeaway and watch the magic unfold with the husband.
Cannot wait!

emmetgirl · 27/06/2024 21:22

I'll be up all night watching. I don't work Fridays so it doesn't matter!

keffie12 · 27/06/2024 21:23

I haven't stopped up through election night for years since the adult children were young.

This year I am. It has been 8 years too long coming since that idiot Cameron opened his big mouth.

I am going to bed with my laptop, channel 4 election night on it, soft drinks and munchies.

I'm going to watch every bloody Tory seat fall and cheer everyone away.

I'm up for election bingo! This will be the biggest party ever with the majority of this country.

It's just a shame some have stood down (cowardly knowing they would be beat), and we can't see more go.

Sunak, Hunt, Stride, Mordant, Mogg, Truss, etc. as many as is humanely possible.

If they must keep some, can the lib dems have more seats and become the official opposition, pretty please, universe.

In the immortal words of Bob Monkhouse, "I know I'm a sinner, but please let us be the winners." 😏

7 more sleeps 💤 until we get our country out of the hands of the Tories and can gradually rebuild and heal

Silviasilvertoes · 27/06/2024 21:28

Shall we start an election bingo thread?
