Election night plans, anyone?

Voter since 1987. I watched the 1997 election in a tiny spare room of a friend on one of those old fashioned black and white tellies where you had to move the arial by hand and search for the station by turning the dial - all that was available.

This time, I'm thinking popcorn and wine. I have the day off the next day. Unlike my husband.

I think there's a Newscast Special planned so I might go for that option.

Anyone else got plans? Snack ideas? Stamina aids?

I'll be going to bed with one shit government and waking up with another shit government.

Don't get me wrong, this government I'll be glad to see gone, but the next (Labour) government are hardly something to celebrate. Going from shit... to shit.

Working a poll station from 6:15am to 10:15pm, then off to count the ballots in a seat that's expected to flip to red for the first time ever

This time next week I'll be waiting to start counting the first ballot box I expect .

Could well be a 24hr stint - fully expect a sugar / sleep crash on Friday.

Then have a weekend in London for our wedding anniversary with two gigs ( including killers at the o2) and a hidden London Underground tour .

I can’t wait. The exit poll will drop at 10pm and, a few moments later, the Tory party will implode and start tearing itself apart on live TV. It will be a highlight of the year. Then settle in to watch one cabinet minister after another kicked out & made unemployed by their constituents.

The 🍾 🥂will be in the fridge and the 🍿will be ready. A celebratory McDonald’s breakfast at dawn also sounds like a good plan. 😉

This except well maybe go for a celebratory brunch 😁

Blueeyedmale · 27/06/2024 21:45

I've taken the Friday off work, so I will be staying up all night hopefully celebrating the end of the tory government. Sunderland is always very quick and one of the first to declare then it's quiet until about 2am, then you then get declaration after declaration.

Where I live (Gosport) it's been tory for as long as I can remember it's quite close between cons, reform and labour at the moment so could go either way.

There is a lot of poverty here now, never used to be like that, lots of children living in poverty too.its sad to see but hopefully things will change.

I'll watch all night (retired so no early start needed!), lots of nice snacks, wine & big breakfast planned.
But DH & I will watch separately.... can't stand his views and comments ...

Oooh that’s exciting! I remember candidates breathing down my neck while we were counting 😂

TokyoSushi · 27/06/2024 21:57

I'm a Presiding Officer in a polling station all day then I plan to turn my living room into a bedroom, so proper bed with duvet on the sofa, nice lighting, nice snacks and watch/nap/watch the whole night, as an Uber politics nerd, I'm so excited!!

NotDavidTennant · 27/06/2024 21:59

Last couple of elections I've slept for a bit after the exit polls come in as FA happens for the first couple of hours.

TokyoSushi · 27/06/2024 22:00

DH was working nights on the night of the 2016 Trump US election and this napping with the TV on situation worked perfectly for me in my bed, alas this time DH is not on nights, and we have no spare room!

Citygirlrurallife · 27/06/2024 22:01

Got my dad and my bestie coming over and will stay awake as long as poss. Curry sounds like a good shout but def snacks and tea and cake and booze for the drinkers

love the idea of bingo! Can we start some ideas for a bingo card. I’ll start

  1. it’s going to be a long night
Citygirlrurallife · 27/06/2024 22:02

I lived in California for over a decade which made watching our election results much easier!

Henowner · 27/06/2024 22:06

I'll be counting votes into the night, god knows how I'll stay awake 🤣. Will be consuming lots of coffee and tango!

Clingfilm · 27/06/2024 22:14

Oh guys, you're making me nervous, remember the Brexit shock 😬.

I'm going to have everything crossed for the exit poll announcement, hoping to watch til midnight then sleep and probably excitedly wake up, Xmas morning style at 3am and and watch until I start work (at home) on Friday morning.

I'm working a very long day Saturday and Sunday so no weekend to recover, I'm going to be on my arse by Monday, but god it's gonna be worth it 🤞🎉

First time ever I may be watching more Channel 4 than BBC as they've got some interesting people in.

verdantverdure · 27/06/2024 22:15

To be honest I'll probably be a bit tense until our result is announced about 3.45 am.

We should have an idea how things are going by then, surely?

DelilahBucket · 27/06/2024 22:16

I'll be working, with the vote counters, and then will probably collapse in bed nearing the time I would normally be getting up.

bombastix · 27/06/2024 22:22

Case of champagne, a lot of bets to come in (not an MP), watching Channel 4 coverage.

Day off the following day. I cannot wait for these people to go. They are just the pits. I need to watch to make sure their snouts come out of trough

Motherrr · 27/06/2024 22:23

Working til late
Drive home hoping there's nothing that stops me finishing on time and vote
Pray

Did want to go to a big party in London the day after the celebration as have long been wanting the tories out... but have to look after the kids etc and friends have to work. Damn adulting...

Zebracat · 27/06/2024 22:31

I’m having a tooth out on Thursday afternoon, figure I’ll probably sleep all evening and then wake-up starving as the results come in. Could be kind of ok.

greencatbob · 27/06/2024 23:09

I'm counting the votes and can't wait! I get paid but I'd do it for free as I love it so much!!

TeaandHobnobs · 27/06/2024 23:10

The 9yo and I are debating an early night, then getting up around 3:30 to see the results roll in (on school hols by then). However I can’t see them actually doing it, despite their enthusiasm!

KatPurrson · 27/06/2024 23:24

Touch wood, here goes:

Afternoon/evening nap.
Some crispy aromatic duck.
Irn bru.
Crisps, pretzels, chocolate.
I might make fudge in the quiet bit.
Channel Four coverage plus Mumsnet and TRIP discord.
Sushi bowl and fruit.
Champagne in the fridge.
Wipeout bingo.
Dancing.
Some kind of breakfast sandwich.
Sleep all day.
Football double bill.

KatPurrson · 27/06/2024 23:39

Actually maybe chicken and french toast for breakfast.

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 27/06/2024 23:45

Telling in the day, counting agent from 10pm.

AmelieTaylor · 27/06/2024 23:57

OneEdgyFatball · 27/06/2024 16:43

I won't bother staying up. No reason to celebrate. Mark my words, Liebour will be 100x worse

@OneEdgyFatball

I agree with you, but I'm still going to watch it, because I think it's going to be a lot more interesting than some people think.

if I had the energy I'd take a list of names and see how they're feeling one year in...I very much doubt any of them will be this excited about Labour.

IMO anyone voting Labour doesn't understand they need to hear what they're NOT saying.,
