I don’t know where you get the stomach to watch Farage for half an hour. I salute you.

ThisOldThang · 21/06/2024 21:15

I just watched the Robinson interview. I think Robinson was quite unprofessional. His dislike of Farage was pretty clearly on show and he resorted to sneering and smears.

I expect the other interviews will be nice cosy chats.

BIossomtoes · 21/06/2024 21:22

Farage is an odious git who has no business being interviewed on the BBC at all.

Do you agree with him on Russia?

When Putin invaded Crimea I said to a friend that Putin was running rings around our leaders. My friend has misquoted me and accused me of being a Putin fan ever since, so I do feel some sympathy for Farage on that topic.

It's possible to acknowledge that somebody is 'winning' without supporting their actions. For example, plenty of people on this thread have said they hate Farage, but acknowledge he's good at actually answering questions on TV and probably won the first TV debate.

DuncinToffee · 21/06/2024 22:38

In the 10 since, you haven't managed to convince your friend you are not a Putin fan?

ThisOldThang · 21/06/2024 22:41

He just hears/remembers what he wants to hear.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/06/2024 01:00

Farage is a long term Putin apologist. And possible employee.

’Hating foreigners’ and calling people ‘racists, bigots’ for talking about immigration is a lazy argument designed to shut down discussion about the pros and cons of immigration. Immigration needs to be discussed as it affects every area of country and how we plan future infrastructure. We do need a level of immigration to fill skills shortages and for the exchange of ideas in higher education and research. Immigration is also good for cultural exchange and enriches our national life.

However, immIgration needs to be controlled so we can comfortably accomodate migrants for housing, public serves , schooling and health. I have noticed illegal migrants in my town living rough sleeping in bushes and hedges then go to work as deliveroo couriers and on building sites. They are probably also indebted to trafficking gangs and vulnerable to violence. These are mostly young men the same age as my dc1 I would hate them to be having the life these migrants are having.

When I look on my street about 50% of the houses are rented out as BLT to immigrants who have arrived in the past 10 years. We all get along and I’m friendly with a few of the families but it does highlight these houses are now unavailable to young couples who want to buy and settle down as we did in the 90’s when we moved into the street along with other young couples. Even if there were houses were for sale the cost would be unaffordable for the young like my dcs. There has been little new housing being built in the town and what there is are mainly 1-2 bed flats on the outskirts with a very infrequent bus service.

So it’s not about ‘Hating foreigners’ it’s about making sure we have enough housing and public services to take care of the British people and also migrants who come here to contribute. Everyone deserves to live meaningfully and with dignity, having unlimited numbers of people in the UK will lead to neither.

TBH the issues you've raised aren't so much to do with immigration but the UKs weak and unenforced laws.

Illegal migrants working? (and paying no tax etc and as you say, being trafficked) how come? huge draw factor isn't it? and down to the UK.

Why have we allowed BTL's to take over the provision of social housing? and our failure to build council housing?

Terrible & expensive public transport.

Legal migration? Govt made it legal to be able to pay migrants a lower salary!
Fails to train unemployed, first with work experience and then with a skill, thats on us.....

Took us out of the EU, so now the migrants we need come from SE Asia/Africa and they bring their dependants with them.

All our own fault but we blame the foreigner.

FWIW I think the country needs a grown up debate about immigration that we don't seem capable of having. Immigration needs to go hand in hand with house building and the provision of other services.

HOWEVER a vote for Reform is a vote to embolden Putin and hugely weaken the West. Which will lead to war, possibly a nuclear one.

Why would it 'embolden' Putin to nuke the UK if people protest vote Reform?

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2014/mar/31/farage-i-admire-putin

Nigel Farage has named Vladimir Putin as the world leader he most admires, praising the Russian president's handling of the crisis in Syria.

ThisOldThang · 22/06/2024 11:13

The Brexit party, which abstains or opposes most European parliament votes, hit back at the claims. “We will always vote against more power and spending by the EU,” said David Bull, a Brexit party MEP.

___

They always voted against the EU getting more power, so that's a complete non-story that the Guardian expanded into a smear.

Yes we seem to be moving quickly from ignoring it to messy without just dealing with immigration issues

I’d say it’s due to legal limitations and other EU countries are seeing the same

I can see the issue growing if we can’t organise a way to manage change

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2024 11:30

Do people agree with Farage then when he calls the refugees arrving by small boats an 'invasion''?

It's on his twitter account if you want to check it out

Yes. It is an invasion.

Yes. It is an invasion.

How so?

Fawful · 22/06/2024 12:13

@BluntFatball you want the UK to be on Russia's side if a war with the West starts? You know Putin steals from his people and kills his opponents? Why would want the UK aligned with one of the world's worst dictators? The mind boggles.
A vote for a Putin apologist is a move to embolden Russia and make them try to exert influence on us - I 'd really like the UK to look nothing like Russia, ever, please...
Farage has respect for Putin as a leader - does that include his false flag operations, willingness to kill to hang on to power, complete lack of regard for his citizens' welfare, alliance with North Korea, Iran and Assad, intolerance of homosexuality, sport doping program... Everything Putin does is completely immoral, and he respects him as a leader?

Fawful · 22/06/2024 12:28

Farage claims to be a patriot but Putin is not good news for democracy in the UK... Why you'd respect someone who ordered several poisonings on UK soil, with radioactive substances poured into teacups in a central London hotel, at great risk to the British public, and nerve agents casually thrown around in Salisbury, is completely beyond me. Farage and Le Pen get on well too, God help us, honestly!

Also I would like someone who says Reform isn't racist to explain to me how this isn't racist.

I mean, this is beyond disgusting…but it seems so disgusting that it feels more like anti reform propaganda than something they would genuinely put out. Are you certain of the source?
