cyb · 27/05/2010 20:05

what's an ipad?

Coderooo · 27/05/2010 20:05

iphone but bigger

RubberDuck · 27/05/2010 20:06

Okay, I am in LOVE with this thing.

Have you got We Rule, Soupy? Need a neighbour :D

The diner dash game is cool too. And films on it... wow. Have changed my wallpaper though, I kept thinking the star trails were scratches.

MmeLindt · 27/05/2010 20:06

Did you? I did not see that. Was too busy sniggering over your M&S shoplifter.

cyb · 27/05/2010 20:06

what's an iphone?

CornishKK · 27/05/2010 20:11

I am so farking jealous I can barely type on this piece of shit Dell that I have to contend with.

I have recently converted DH to an iPhone, working on the need for an iPad right now - he said Christmas. NNOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Damn being a SAHM with no salary and my foolish newly implemented "purchases over £500 need joint approval" policy.

Considering a brief trip into the world of prostitution......

SoupDragon · 27/05/2010 20:22

Mine was only £499 so under £500.

Rubberduck, I don't have we rule, a friend does and she's bored with it. I thought the star trails were scratches too!

Yes, Mme Lindt, You can put books on it.

I like the way you think Soup!

DH has just offered to buy me it, now I'm being all sensible and saying no I don't need it. It's killing me.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2010 20:30

It's not a matter of need.

OP posts:
RubberDuck · 27/05/2010 20:38

Ooooo this was just meant for Mumsnetting!

Can't quite manage to touch type yet though, doing a bizarre mix of touch typing and hunt and peck. Much quicker and more accurate than on iPhone though.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2010 22:06

First problem... Poor wifi signal in bedroom.

OP posts:
Thediaryofanobody · 27/05/2010 22:11

Does it do the predicative txt thing and can you turn it off?

RubberDuck · 27/05/2010 22:25

yes it does the predictive text thing, and you probably can in the settings somewhere.

Ah yes, we have that problem too Soupy. Going to set my resident techie on the problem this weekend!

Thediaryofanobody · 27/05/2010 22:37

Soup your DH/DP will have turned the wifi off when he saw you bring it to bed!

RubberDuck · 27/05/2010 22:50

Whereas my DH has his own iPad (bad things would happen if we didn't have one each...)

PrivetDancer · 27/05/2010 22:58

I really want to want one but I just can't see the point
I love my iPhone but i can't see what it does different other than be bigger, without a camera and without the phone part. Convince me!

RubberDuck · 27/05/2010 23:18

Well tbh, I can see it becoming a laptop replacement.

Was discussing this with dh tonight - it's nicer to read the web/RSS feeds on the iPad than on the iMac screen, watching films is nicer (because the energy saver doesn't kick in and the screen dim part way through), gaming is more direct - games which are too fiddly on an iphone are bloody AWESOME on the ipad. I haven't developed the attention span yet for a book, but I had a look at a magazine app, and it's a really nice way to read one.

It's lighter than a laptop, more portable than the iMac... the only advantage of the iMac I can see is the multitasking ability. Once they've sussed that, then I'm not totally sure what the point of a "proper" computer over this is, especially when I've invested in a bluetooth keyboard for my more heavy writing/word count needs.

I've been waiting for this since the first rumours because it's exactly what I've wanted for so long - far better than a netbook for a small portable web device.

SoupDragon · 28/05/2010 06:28

Internet is faster than on an iPhone. The keyboard on an iPad is bigger, it's easier to type. It looks pretty...

I see it as a laptop replacement. I think I said earlier that I don't need the full functionality of a laptop and this fits the bill. And looks pretty. It's small and light which means its easy to carry about to show -off-- to people.

Oh, and this replaces the need for a DH, what with the vibrate function on the iphone and the new Fart 'n' Snore App.

Dhs Ours arrived yesterday too - we weren't expecting it till today and course TNT turned up in the 5 minutes or so that no one was at home! Luckily they were still in the area and came back...

I still haven't had a proper go as dh & the dcs have been hogging it!

ZsadistsShellan · 28/05/2010 07:01

Soup im really jealous would love an ipad especially for all my e-books.

RustyBear · 28/05/2010 07:31

So should I get one?
I love my iPhone, especially the way it's always with me in my pocket, which the ipad wouldn't be, but my iPhone is only a 3G not a 3Gs and when the new OS comes out I won't be able to use 'some' of the new features including multitasking.

So I have been thinking of either getting a 3Gs or waiting until the iPhone 4.0 appears, if it ever does - but now the ipad has entered the mix...

DH has offered to get me an ipad for our 30th wedding anniversary which was last week (he said go for the top of the range one with 3G & biggest capacity but that was on the day of the anniversary when he was probably feeling guilty at not actually having got me a present yet!) I actually went online to order one, but discovered they'd just changed the delivery date, so I decided to wait until someone I knew on MN got one and I could succumb to jealousy make an informed decision....

The other alternative (can you have more than two alternatives?) is to get a MacBook - I have a Toshiba 13" laptop which is 2 years old & still quite good. If I got an ipad I'd keep the laptop to play my shockwave games which I can't get on the ipad, but if I got a mac the laptop could go to DD when her oldish laptop dies...

RustyBear · 28/05/2010 07:38

Oh and what about playing music? Will there be special docking speakers available for vast sums of money? Or an adaptor so I can play it through the various systems I've already got?

SoupDragon · 28/05/2010 07:42

I use an iPod to AV cable to play my phone through my home stereo. It can charge ti phone at the same time and I see i reason it wouldn't work with an ipad.

Battery life is as poor as the iPhone.
