Noticed the current thread is almost full so thought I better start a new one for discussing results day and our DC’s plans for uni/gap years or anything else!

DD has exams over the next two days and is getting the train home on Wednesday. It is a late finish but she is glad to have the exams before Christmas rather than after, especially as her old manager has found her some work shifts over Christmas. She has loved this semester and I think can't quite believe how quickly it has gone.

Good luck with the op @MrsAvocet

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and New Year, both parents and DC.

sammyjoanne · 15/12/2024 23:00

Hope the op goes well @MrsAvocet
DD2 has finished the term. Loved every minute of it. Even braved holding a tarantula and she hates spiders. Shes now doing all the extra hours at her place in retail (shes worked there since April). DD2 and DD1 and boyfriends and my parents all went for a christmas meal last night on the 14th, as its the only time we will be all together. It was gorgeous. Just a 3 course festive dinner at the local beefeater but it was superb.
DD1 although her visit was short and sweet, has now gone back to Manchester with her b/f where she will continue with her phd until end of this week and is off for christmas and spending time at her boyfriend and his family. DD2 boyfriend is going back to cardiff to see his family on the 22nd, but DD2 is working in Nottingham until the 29th. So shes spending Christmas eve night with us, opening pressies and then having Christmas dinner. Christmas day afternoon, we are dropping DD2 off to my parents where shes staying for tea and over night for a couple of nights, and hubby and me are off on our jollies to spend new year cruising. Past few new years we been on our own with the tele. Our DDs are usually with their boyfriends and friends and last year it was was just us and James Bond on TV. DD2 will go to join her boyfriend on the 29th in Cardiff and spending time there until the 2nd where they will both come back to Nottingham.

I hope you all enjoy your time with your DC over Christmas and the new year 😀

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 18/12/2024 17:36

Thanks all for the suggestions, I think he is sorted now. He came to a bookshop with me today and bought a present for his sister so that's nice.

Hope everyone has a nice Christmas, I'm jealous of @sammyjoanne heading off for a cruise. We don't normally do much for new year, perhaps we should start some new traditions!

sammyjoanne · 18/12/2024 17:46

@IThinkIMadeItWorse
I wish it could be every year lol, but this one was a bargain :) We have had a tough year so its definitely welcomed, thats for sure.

ShanghaiDiva · 18/12/2024 18:44

Dd came home on 16th looking very tired (she has a chronic illness which affects her autonomic nervous system) but hopefully she will feel a little better now she is home. Has to be better than last year when she was admitted to hospital on Boxing Day. Looking forward to a relaxing few weeks.

TenSheds · 18/12/2024 21:31

Back ten days and cabin fever set in here already. DD is missing her uni friends and having them, and facilities, on hand all the time. She's arranged to meet a couple of friends at the weekend and has been getting on with the work she's been set, but definitely taking some adjustment to a quieter pace of life. We don't have a whole lot booked over Christmas either (small, distant family). Could be a long few weeks.

Penguinsa · 18/12/2024 21:50

Hope everyone has a great Christmas.

Have a great cruise Sammy

Hope your DD is feeling better soon Shanghai

DD been back a week and half now and spent 3 days in Bristol seeing her boyfriend, both back here now and been out here, she's had her nails done and passed her driving theory test. I started a new job full time start of December and also now allowed back swimming after a 12 week break after surgery and just been tonight. DH has just bought a classic car and is very excited about it. Have ordered things for Christmas here. DD has New Years party here. DH will go to Paris for a few days between Christmas and New Year and then we will all be here for New Year. I think DD has some rowing test to do soon.

sammyjoanne · 18/12/2024 22:17

Thanks @Penguinsa and enjoy christmas, and glad you are swimming again. @ShanghaiDiva hope your DD is feeling better soon. @TenSheds I know the feeling. we live in a little village with not much going on so when DD1 was back she wanted to be right back with uni friends. Every couple of months we see each other for the weekend. Either us at her city, or she comes back to ours. I dont think she could last two weeks here though. Theres not much going on lol @PumpkinKnitter thats nice DD old manager has got her some shifts. And exams as well, daughter did Animal Husbandry and Nutrition and although they was like mocks, she was glad to get the practice in.

LouisCatorze · 22/12/2024 07:29

Been a bit hectic here so not got time to read through the past few pages of the thread.

Hoping everyone has a peaceful and relaxing Christmas and stays well.

DD has had another nasty cough. She went into work yesterday and was sent home she was looking and feeling so unwell. At least she should be well again by the 25th. Hoping she's not given it to anyone else.

QueenMabby · 22/12/2024 12:35

We're a plague house. DS and DH are smugly fine but dd and I have the virus. I've been ill for 10 days now. It's horrible. I'm coughing so much. Hoping to have improved by Tuesday but it's frustrating not being able to do much.

ShanghaiDiva · 22/12/2024 14:10

@QueenMabby ds brought plague home with him.

sammyjoanne · 23/12/2024 19:11

hope everyone gets better soon for christmas xx

MrsAvocet · 26/12/2024 23:48

Hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas with their offspring back home.
Ours has been good, though I underestimated quite how rotten I would feel post operatively. I think because I had a big operation last year and this one was minor in comparison I thought I'd sail through it but it's been harder than I imagined, I woke up feeling extremely rough yesterday. Wasn't sure I'd get through the day but I picked up later and am feeling abit better today. We managed to get out for a short walk this afternoon and I think the fresh air did me good.
DS did well in all his end of term exams and in enjoying the break. Though he moaned about having exams before Christmas he's reaping the benefits now, unlike his big brother and best friend both of whom have exams as soon as they go back after Christmas.
I'm enjoying having the house full again but had forgotten quite how quickly food disappears in such circumstances. I had a huge, or so I thought, Tesco delivery on 23rd but it's virtually all gone already! And then there's the overflowing laundry basket...it's just like old times here! 😂

Penguinsa · 26/12/2024 23:59

Hope you feel better soon MrsAvocet, glad you had a good Christmas.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Just a quiet one here with Christmas meal at home and presents. Been to Horsey beach today to see the baby seals which was lovely. DD has done couple of driving lessons with DH. Her boyfriend is away with his family and not back until end of the year. She has a New Years party to go to. DH will go to France for 5 days to see his friends and relatives. Then we have DSs 18th in January, ordered lots of cakes.

legosnowqueen · 31/12/2024 16:23

Hello all, lovely to see what you & your DCs are up to. Picking up tips for next year when hopefully DS will be at uni - he submitted his UCAS form the week before Christmas....not the best timing but has had an offer from Liverpool which has boosted him. It's been a tough month as, after 9 months with no health issues, poor DS had another seizure & stay in hospital at the beginning of the month. We knew there was a risk but it's fair to say that, as time went on, it seemed remote. This does mean he is now on anti seizure meds so we hope they will keep a lid on things, he feels quite positive in that respect.

We have had a nice quiet Family Christmas & DS is well rested.
School have been fantastic again & have deferred his mocks until late January. However he is still working on his NEA!

Wishing everyone a happy & healthy 2025!

QueenMabby · 31/12/2024 22:04

Glad to hear from you @legosnowqueen. Sorry your dd has had another seizure but hopefully the meds will keep them at bay. Great news about the Liverpool offer. Where else has he applied?

legosnowqueen · 31/12/2024 22:17

Thanks @QueenMabby he's also applied to Durham, Birmingham & Edinburgh to study Business Management & - new choice this time - Manchester to study International Economics & Business. Durham was his firm choice in 2024 but he's very interested in the Manchester course...

sammyjoanne · 21/01/2025 23:11

Hi everyone Happy new year to you all. @legosnowqueen hope your DS is ok and hope he gets all the offers :)
Both the DD's are back at uni, DD2 has formatives which are like mock exams so shes cracking on with them. Had a quiet christmas and was on a cruise at new years as the DD's were with their B/F and their families so it was just me and the hubby and a bunch of cocktails with some sunshine. Then back home to sort out my late FIL's house to clear out ready for selling. So its been a bit manic as were doing that every weekend pre christmas and now new year. DD2 has secured her flat for this September with her B/F

ShanghaiDiva · 22/01/2025 07:01

@sammyjoanne new year cruise sounds lovely! Dd went back on 5th January and has her last exam today and then semester two starts on 3rd Feb.

QueenMabby · 22/01/2025 07:37

@sammyjoanne - I've very envious of the cruise. It's on dh and my list of things to do once both of ours are at uni.

Ds went back a fortnight ago. Exams last week (two physics) and this week (two maths) so we'll see how they go. He says the difficulty has really ramped up on his new modules so he's having to work hard. He had 7 contact hours on his first day back!

MrsAvocet · 22/01/2025 13:11

Happy New Year everyone.
It seems very quiet here now as after having all 3 of my children home over the holidays, plus DD's fiancé and dog, and then some of my sons' friends staying it's just me and DH again, and he's been on 2 multiple day business trips so it has been just me.
DS has had all his pre Christmas exam results back now and has done very well, which I am pleased about as I must confess I did have some concern about exactly how much work he was doing, given his hectic social and sporting life! But it seems to be enough so far, though I have warned him about being too complacent as being an English student at a Scottish University some of what he has done so far was covered in A levels but that advantage won't last long. He seems to have done pretty well in the completely new topics though too so hopefully all's well.
Yesterday Facebook reminded me that we were visiting a different University a year ago. It's strange, I can't believe that this time last year he hadn't even made a decision where he wanted to go. A lot has happened in a year! School simultaneously seems like yesterday and a different lifetime.

legosnowqueen · 31/12/2024 22:17

How exciting! Keep us posted.

DD is going back Saturday - she’s had exams the last week or so but they’re online and apparently she “works better at home”. She is however missing her friends (and the clubbing no doubt) so will be happy to go back. Exams seem to have gone ok, she was nervous, but relaxed into them when she realised they weren’t so bad. Lots of her uni friends are back already and missing her which is nice.

DH and I are off for a cheeky weekend in Budapest in a month - freedom!!!

sammyjoanne · 22/01/2025 23:17

@@ShanghaiDiva bet shes glad to have her last exam 🙂 @QueenMabby I remember when DD1 had maths and physics exams at Lancaster. The learning does ramp up a bit now and starts to get more interesting and not reeling out Alevel content. And cruising is fab, I love it. Went for our 25th 3 years ago and got the travel cruise bug.
Glad to hear your DS has done well @MrsAvocet . @SooperOuting Enjoy Budapest, its beautiful 😀

Rollergirl11 · 24/01/2025 18:47

Lovely to read everyone’s updates and hello to @legosnowqueen! Sorry to hear your DS had another seizure but glad it’s under control and good luck on getting his offers back.

Hope all DC’s that had exams to go back to have done their best!

DD has been back at Exeter 2 weeks now and she sounds really happy and like she’s found her groove. She has different modules to last term and although her timetable is fuller she’s really enjoying the new content. She’s happy in her flat and has made good friends. I think she’s also feeling much better about the break-up with her boyfriend and can see now how it was for the best. I think she’s feeling a sense of freedom and has risen to the challenge of living independently. She quite often sends us pictures of her dinner that she’s made and is proud of. I was a bit worried about her not eating properly when she was away but so far that hasn’t been a problem!

Thanks @Rollergirl11 @sammyjoanne @SooperOuting

@sammyjoanne the cruise sounds very relaxing! As does Budapest @SooperOuting

DH & I have put travel plans on hold for the moment. It's going to be difficult to get travel insurance for DS at the moment as he is waiting for a neurologist's appointment at the moment & insurers hate uncertainty. Such a shame as a weekend away would do him good. His friends at uni have all gone back & several local friends on gap years have just headed off to Asia & South America, having stayed in town last term & worked, so I fear he's a bit lonely, although he has friends at work. Because of friendship group being around until October last year, he didn't really tried to make friends in his new year group, which may have been a mistake with hindsight.

On a more positive note, he has offers now from Manchester & Birmingham too. Still waiting to hear from Durham (deja vu) & Edinburgh (apparently even slower than Durham) but even if he's unsuccessful with them he would happily go with Manchester & Liverpool. Although the Manchester offer is AAA which feels a bit daunting, especially as they don't seem to be flexible.

I remember from last year there was some discussion about a Meningitis jab pre uni...did your DCs have this? I'm thinking I should help DS sort this sooner rather than later.

Good luck to all DCs with their exams.
