Noticed the current thread is almost full so thought I better start a new one for discussing results day and our DC’s plans for uni/gap years or anything else!

Welcome Crazycrofter Hope your DS gets the results he needs. It's a lovely thread here but a bit quiet at the moment as its summer and people go away, also can get a bit busy if have younger ones in school.

DD has been like the Duracell bunny again (DS is a sloth, she seems to have energy for 2 of them) and did a full days work including 5 hours sport plus commute plus party until the early hours then back out working in her sporty job again today. DH has taken 6 weeks off which is lovely and we have got a lot done in garden, and had a few lovely days out - yesterday went to Sezincote, for house, gardens and cake then back via Oxford looking round colleges and a pub on a lovely sunny day. DD has had 2 holidays so far Borneo and Kefalonia and will spend a lot of the rest of holiday doing her punting job but pay is seasonal and much higher in summer and good tips. Someone gave her a £50 note the other day and she had never seen one before, don't think I have seen them in recent years. She hasn't mentioned any university reading so not sure if they haven't sent it or she is leaving it to last minute as usual. She has asked about buying stuff but we agreed to leave it until after results day as still plenty of time but her room is about 1 feet deep in stuff already. I am hoping she will clear it over the holidays but so far its just extended 1 suitcase into the rest of house.

Some good news here today. DS has had an email from his insurance reducing his offer quite significantly. I mean we are still hoping he doesn't need to take them up on it of course as he should get what he needs for his firm, but you never know (and he is still anxious about thar awful Physics paper.) It would take a major disaster for him to now not get his insurance offer and he doesn't think anything that bad happened, so it's taken the pressure off a lot. We were very pleasantly surprised by his insurance choice when we went to the offer holders' day actually. It was his third or fourth choice by a long way on paper but shot up in all our opinions after visiting so I would be happy enough if he ended up there. And it's very good for one of his sports.
Speaking of sport we were up at his first choice city last weekend for his other sport and the team he was playing invited him to join when (hopefully) he arrives. It's a fairly niche sport so no University team so it's nice to have found a community team already. In fact they have invited him to play for them tomorrow so we're off in the morning. Bit of a trek but I think it is worth the effort. Just hope we're not tempting fate!

Penguinsa · 20/07/2024 15:24

That's really good news MrsAvocet I think around now its normal to get nervous about the grades as well so nice to have that safety net. I think that maybe partly why DD is keeping so busy so her mind doesn't wander there. Great about the sport.

crazycrofter · 20/07/2024 19:15

That’s good news to get @MrsAvocet in the run up to results! @Penguinsa the punting sounds very lucrative!

If anyone has a dc heading to Nottingham, my older dd is there so I can help with info!

Ds worked nine hour days at Tesco for 11 days in a row, which seems like it might not be legal (he’s under 18 still), then he had a day off and did another five days, after which they said he had to have 48 hours off! Maybe they’re just not good a keeping track? He will be very annoyed if he has to have 48 hours off every five days, as he wants to earn money for travelling! He’s also been talking a bit about which apprenticeships he’ll apply for…

mondaytosunday · 20/07/2024 20:01

Hi y'all. As you know DD left school a year ago so has her grades and has opted for Durham. She's been allocated her first choice of St John's and hopes they don't reallocate! She is toying with changing to joint honours either history but wonders if that weakens her Sociology degree in terms of getting on a good masters program.
We went to Spain for a couple weeks and she's supposed to be looking for a job now, but can't say she's been over enthusiastic! I'm steering her to at least putting herself forward as a volunteer at our local youth theatre. But she's been to the hospital for regular tests this past week and back again next week (she has MS), sorting a few things for uni and coming up with a list of things for her room (mostly maps and a globe).
She did an Art Foundation this past year (was originally thinking of doing Animation as a degree) and will get her marks on results day, but that doesn't affect her degree.
So we plod on! She was going to start driving lessons but not sure if that's worth it going away and not driving for a few months? Supposed she could take lessons there. Might at least get the theory out of the way.

aramox1 · 21/07/2024 13:42

Checking back in! Ds has been away for 3 weeks, very restful, and hope he has had plenty of de stressing. It's been good practice for coming year- both as a separation and I realised a few things he might not know how to do, and he tends not to ask.
Uni still seems a long way off, though!

sammyjoanne · 21/07/2024 17:54

Hi Im checking in 😊 daughter finished her year13 last year and is already on the gap year, so starting uni in September at Nottingham Trent with the year 13 cohort. Currently going through her a level text books to keep her memory fresh for when she starts 😊 she worked at Tesco until Christmas last year. Then April she has a part time job at a gadget shop in the city and they are pretty flexible so she can continue with that. Just been to eldest graduation last week and very emotional and proud. I’m wishing everyone with results day all the very best. Will be watching the thread and hoping your DC do amazing

Neveragainisaid · 25/07/2024 15:55

Hello All. Checking in. Are the results 3 weeks today? Lost track of time somewhat. DC is off to Art college and we've already had their joining instructions (confirmed place). Still anxious about results though as they worked so hard.

Penguinsa · 25/07/2024 16:10

Yes they are on 15th August and my operation has also been pushed back to 13th with a week in hospital so no chance (unless delayed again) I will be in the land of the living at that point. Think she will be OK and if not her school and she are very on the ball which is good as I will be in hospital after an 11 hour op and DH is pretty clueless with these things. Will be good - well hopefully will be good - to get confirmed and then will start buying things for university. DH is currently away for 8 days so just me, kids and Floof, silkies also on their holidays.

sammyjoanne · 26/07/2024 23:06

@Penguinsa wishing all the best for the 13th, and that must be nice to know that shes clued up and on the ball come results day.

Penguinsa · 26/07/2024 23:12

Thanks Sammy and welcome.

stoneysongs · 27/07/2024 15:38

I fell off the last thread as exams were about to start but have read it all now and glad to hear most DC seem to have come through more or less unscathed and everyone is enjoying their summers.

DD is just back from camping with her friends, her 18th is next week, then we have our family holiday and then it'll be 15th before we know it.

Exams were pretty stressful here and didn't go very well - DD is convinced she will not get the grades she needs for her firm but hey ho. I thought I'd use the new info on UCAS to check how lenient UCL might be if she drops a grade - discovered that % admitted with AAA instead of A*AA is 0%. So that's not much help 😂

Never mind, it'll all be ok in the end, whatever happens.

Lightsabre · 27/07/2024 15:41

Good luck Penguinsa.

Ds is still away - returned from one trip and straight off a day later on another. Due back Monday. I'm hoping he'll make some tracks into getting a job or some voluntary work soon. Can't believe August is nearly here - I'd almost forgotten about results day!

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 15:44

Hope your DD has a great 18th Stoney. Hope its just nerves and she did get the grades but those UCAS things I think exclude the top 5% and bottom 5% of people they took so it could be there were people with AAA or lower they took - might be a Freedom of Information request. DD found one for her course at Oxford which said 4 out of 27 who had gone down from A star AA had been taken over last 4 years - going to be very case specific I guess. Also may depend what years data is being used compared to results this year.

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 15:47

Thanks Lightsabre Yes lots of various holidays here but good distraction from results day. DD has been on 2 holidays and DH is now away on 8 days holiday in France and she is working today and her boyfriend has 4 holidays. I am glad I went to Borneo with DD in June so have my holiday done pre op.

Neveragainisaid · 27/07/2024 17:59

Good luck @Penguinsa. Hope all goes really well.

We're now getting a couple of emails a week from those unis we expressed an interest in (both ones we applied for, and those we didn't), saying Clearing is already open. I wonder whether the course they wanted isn't highly sought after? Or is this usual?

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 18:03

Thanks Never Not getting that for economics courses but don't know for other courses.

4andnotcounting · 27/07/2024 19:02

Is my DS the only one who hasn’t got a job for the summer ? I feel really disappointed in him for his lack of trying! He says he wants to do nothing - but has made some unsuccessful applications . DS could deffo try harder. We’re low income so could really do with him buying his own things . ( for uni) I’m so surprised at his resistance!

aramox1 · 27/07/2024 23:12

Mine neither. He says he's tried but no luck. I'm not surprised, as no experience and our area is full of young people. Now says can't do anything because no money.

TenSheds · 28/07/2024 08:21

Am quite relieved now that DD isn't working, there is an ever increasing stream of pre reading etc to do. I'll be sad for her if she doesn't get the grades and feels she's lost out on the endless summer.

Meanwhile, I'm covertly researching plans C and D for the 15th. If she's not got the grades, she's not going to be in any state to make a clear decision for a few hours. Fortunately, I think there are a couple of good options in clearing now, including her original third preference so all should be ok.

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 28/07/2024 15:35

My DS is not interested in getting a job, I asked him if he wanted to earn some money for uni but he said he would just spend less at uni! Maybe next summer. I'm hoping that he will at least look at some maths at some point over the summer.

I don't think he has had stuff from universities in clearing but he's not great at checking his email so there may have been some.

All the best for your op @Penguinsa hope it goes as well as it can go and they look after you.

Penguinsa · 28/07/2024 16:50

Thanks Its Am just hoping it stays at that date and doesn't get pushed back again. You apparently get your own room first 3 nights so that's good. Last NHS op, they cancelled and moved me to Nuffield with NHS paying, would be great if could do that again - mainly the own room, own bathroom and lovely food, medical care wasn't that different. I can dream 😂

DD was working yesterday punting, but hurt her hand and then decided going to A&E at 9.30pm on a Saturday night was a good idea. DH and her boyfriends family are both away and I don't drive - could not persuade her that she would be waiting ages and they would just say to rest it. She got back via taxi at around 4am and they just said to rest it and no medical reason for it. Cat was not happy and was charging around all the time she was gone, one staff is not good enough. DS also here but doesn't help with cat. She's cancelled work for today and gone to watch Formula 1 with friends and boyfriend and DH back tomorrow. DH has been in France for 8 days. DD started working at 16 and done 2 jobs and loads of hours, been good for her as she spends lots as well but DS is a year younger and will never spend anything and just does ipad and TV, he's asd but also has always been years behind DD in maturity. He has been good when DH has been away doing a lot of his own cooking and washing up. DD hasn't had any reading yet from Oxford, she says they wait until results day, she's not worked as much as I expected this summer as been on holiday with me, then on holiday with boyfriend and now DH has been away but she worked a lot during A levels and it was so hectic last year its good for her to relax a bit.

crazycrofter · 28/07/2024 18:53

My older dd (two years older) didn’t find any work in the summer after A Levels, except a weekend working at a festival. She did have around £4k in her trust fund but it all went by the end of first year 😩 She managed to get a job at home for the next summer and a term time job in second year, after lots of applications. She learned the hard way.. She does spend a LOT of money though - loads of friends all over the country to visit, gigs, holidays, tattoos and piercings 🤣😬

Ds is working full time at Tesco, saving for his travels.

MrsAvocet · 28/07/2024 21:14

My DS is working sporadically. He gave up his regular job at Christmas to focus on study and they replaced him so he didn't expect to go back there but they've asked him to fill in for holidays so he's working on and off. I'm sure he could get something full time if he wanted as we live in a holiday area and there's loads of seasonal work in hospitality but he and I are quite happy with the current situation. I'm enjoying his company and he's also got time to do some volunteering with his sports as well as working on the fitness he lost over the exam period.

SooperOuting · 29/07/2024 15:28

Hello all! Hope everyone is having a great summer. Glorious weather at last.

We are back from a wonderful
holiday and all feeling very refreshed. DDs 18th this week so we are looking forward to that, and then the night after she’s going to the pub with her mates and taking her ID - at last!

Re holiday work - DS (20) does hospitality work but it’s sporadic so he’s also got a TikTok side hustle that seems to pay for all his holidays. DD has just started doggy daycare for neighbours which is netting her a decent wage for not a lot of effort and she’s enjoying it so that’s good. Not sure any of these are especially useful for the old cvs but never mind!

Just over two weeks until results. It’s suddenly on my mind after a lovely 4 weeks or so of not thinking about it at all.

How are we all feeling? DD has convinced herself she’s failed it all (she does tend to underestimate herself) so we have a Plan B/C/D prepared for results day. We have also made sure we can access UCAS on our phones as school want us in at 8am, so hoping we can get into UCAS in the car and then go into school 10 mins later or so for grades.
