Noticed the current thread is almost full so thought I better start a new one for discussing results day and our DC’s plans for uni/gap years or anything else!

@sammyjoanne - thank you for all that good info. I think dh and da stayed at the toll house when they went for the open day.

@BarnacleB - it's good your dd is so excited. What will she be studying?

She will be studying Human Geography.

It's a very weird time @WriterOfWrongs . I'm feeling so bad about ds's results and trying to remember they are his - not mine!

Hope everyone else's plans and activities are ticking along

In all honesty @aramox1 I had a disappointment with my own A levels many years ago and had to go through clearing and wasn’t as half as upset!! That was a piece of cake in comparison to how I’m feeling now!

Unlike me, DD worked extremely hard and had been predicted very high grades throughout, by two different sixth forms (she moved due to illness). So her results are a shock and given she had very difficult health problems I’m feeling very protective and sad for her. For one thing, she may not get accommodation on campus as she’s on the waiting list (albeit with evidence of disability). Once that’s sorted I’ll breathe a sigh of relief.

Does anyone know what happens with the maintenance loan and when it is paid out? Is it in 3 installments? I think DD is going to use that to live on but don’t know how early they receive it.

She can log in to her student loan account and find the exact payment dates and the amount of each payment. I can’t remember what heading it came under but DD and I managed to find the right section on Friday without too much difficulty.

GreatWorldAtlas · 18/08/2024 22:58

Maintenance loan is paid on first day of each term (not freshers week)

sammyjoanne · 18/08/2024 23:14

@WriterOfWrongs Art is just so subjective. I took art alevel and I really thought I would do well and a got an E. A moderator can look it it one way and dont think the art is good and a different moderator finds it fantastic. Shes got into uni and that is a fantastic thing. The art alevel, although it smarts now, once shes in uni and having a blast and getting that degree, it wont hurt as much as time goes on xx

sammyjoanne · 18/08/2024 23:22

@BarnacleB@QueenMabby We did do the premier inn for a time, but went to Toll house this february and loved it and we chose it for graduation in July.
If you go to sainsburys to do the food shop, you have to spend a minimum of 5 pounds for the free parking. The Sainsbury car park scans your car reg. At the checkout just say you want the reciept for the parking. You scan receipt, put in car reg and its registered for free parking.

BarnacleB · 18/08/2024 23:54

@sammyjoanne I think i have been stalking you on TSR. All of your posts about Lancaster have been so helpful and reassuring, so thank you for that.

sammyjoanne · 19/08/2024 00:03

@BarnacleB lol yeah im ghostlady on TSR (used to do many ghost hunts years back) I joined when DD1 applied for Uniq summer school at Oxford, got in, but when applying for a degree she got only as far as the interviews. Thats when I did a lot of research into Lancaster. Then covid 2020 hit and she still went. Shes at Manchester now about to start a phd in particle physics. All thanks to Lancasters support system and help with applications and references and internships.😀

legosnowqueen · 19/08/2024 07:29

@WriterOfWrongs it's completely natural to want to make things right for your DD (particularly with her health issues that she's done so well to overcome - this resonates with me so much at the moment). Best to follow her lead now if she's come to terms with the grade for Art.

Hopefully other things will fall into place over the next few days/weeks & you can have a nice few days away with your other DC this week.

Penguinsa · 19/08/2024 08:58

Hope you can have a lovely few days away with your other DC Writers.

Lightsabre · 19/08/2024 09:08

Sorry to hear you feel low after your dd's results @WriterOfWrongs. I think as parents we feel their disappointments more keenly than our own as we have no control over it. Hopefully there's something that can be done to challenge the grade. Hope also that her accommodation comes through and then things will look a little more positive for you all.

PumpkinKnitter · 19/08/2024 09:36

@sammyjoanne I thought you were Ghostwriter! I have followed you on TSR for a while - my DD was thinking of doing zoology before she settled on neuroscience. Your reviews of the unis you visited with both your DDs were really helpful. I hope DD1 settles in well at Manchester and that DD2 enjoys her new course.

Tulipvase · 19/08/2024 13:00

After some advice re accommodation if any one can help?

My daughter is in a queue for accommodation (I think, she’s in a queue for something any way….). Unfortunately price is a factor for us, she seems to think she has to accept what she’s offered. Is that right? Is she better accepting and then trying to change if needed?

She’s in and we think she’s got the accommodation she wanted. Quite relieved.

sammyjoanne · 19/08/2024 13:59

@PumpkinKnitter ha yes thats my youngest. she did zoology at reading and lasted a week. she got homesick and took a gap year and is now going to NTU for zoo biology.

Hope all goes well 'D.A'' ? (if im right ? lol)

PumpkinKnitter · 19/08/2024 14:04

That's right @sammyjoanne and thank you! All looking good so far. She got her grades for Edinburgh, has been allocated her first choice accommodation and has started chatting to a few people online. Don't think it will quite feel real for her until she is actually there though!

Rollergirl11 · 19/08/2024 14:06

@Tulipvase at Exeter you can submit your preferences but then your daughter is correct that you have to accept what you’re given. Glad she got what she wanted. My DD is still waiting for the email and she’s driving me mad panicking she won’t get any of her preferred choices!

Rollergirl11 · 19/08/2024 14:10

Do you mind me asking what she’s got @Tulipvase? Also is your DD on the WhatsApp group? DD has got talking to a few girls that way which is quite helpful.

Lafrowda - new I think but I’m not sure. Very close to the campus. I don’t think she’s in a WhatsApp - how do we find it?

Fingers crossed for your daughter!

Rollergirl11 · 19/08/2024 14:41

Unfortunately she says she can’t remember @Tulipvase. She thinks maybe there was something on the offer email to join their Facebook group but she went for the WhatsApp group and Instagram link instead.

Thanks - I’ll get her to check. She has a FB group pending, so maybe there will be something in that.

Following your exchange about Exeter with interest @Tulipvase and @Rollergirl11 , as this will be DD's first choice for 2025 entry.

Well so far it’s been very smooth. I just hope it continues……

MrsAvocet · 19/08/2024 20:14

Thanks for the heads up re the bus pass @SooperOuting
One of DS's friends who is already at University in Scotland messaged him with the same advice today, so I will get him onto it ASAP.
By coincidence we're in Glasgow for something completely different this coming weekend so we are going to have a snoop round the campus to identify which his hall is. Obviously we won't be able to go in, but seems a shame not to investigate whilst we're there!
