Noticed the current thread is almost full so thought I better start a new one for discussing results day and our DC’s plans for uni/gap years or anything else!

Sorry to hear your news @WriterOfWrongs I know it probably feels like the end of the world to your DD now but it isn't. She has done well enough to get into her insurance and as Penguinsa says, once she's* *there nobody will care about A level grades. My DH is a great example of this kind of thing. He did so badly in his A levels first time that he didn't even get in anywhere through clearing and had to resit. At resits he still didn't make the grades and ended up somewhere he'd ever heard of through clearing. He's now an internationally respected expert in his field. Nobody gives his A levels (or his to be honest pretty average degree) a second thought these days! People come into their own at different times. Your DD is off to University and many opportunities will come her way. She'll need some time to be sad and to adjust to the new plans which is natural but I'm sure there are exciting times ahead, even if they're not exactly the same as she was planning.

PumpkinKnitter · 15/08/2024 09:05

DD very happy with grades. Slightly less happy that she had a parking fail when she went to school to pick up results which caused minor damage to someone else's car (who was apparently very nice about it). Has taken the shine off things a bit for her.

MrsAvocet · 15/08/2024 09:17

Well having had his firm confirmed DS has gone back to bed! I thought he'd be really excited and desperate to get into school but he says he's mainly relieved and tired so wants to leave it for a bit. The weather is absolutely awful here which is a shame - torrential rain and gale force winds. There'll be no photos of excited kids jumping off the school wall with their results in the local paper this year!

Threewheeler1 · 15/08/2024 09:28

DS at college and still waiting - no results until 9.30.
Those minutes are feeling like hours!

Well done to all our DC's today - they've had a weird stint in education with lockdown etc. (gcse's did not go well in our house!) and they can all be so proud of themselves for getting to this point 🙌

Rollergirl11 · 15/08/2024 09:34

DD not completely happy with grades as she’s dropped one grade from her PG’s. Still enough to reapply to Cambridge and there are spaces on the course so she has until 1pm to fill in the form.

Phew! Ds into first choice despite missing all grades. Those altered boundaries made quite a difference.

stoneysongs · 15/08/2024 09:41

Is she going for it then @Rollergirl11?

Good luck to her if so 🍀

WriterOfWrongs · 15/08/2024 09:46

You are all very kind. Your posts have helped. Thank you.

Huge shock in one grade in particular. She was predicted an A*AA and got BBD. She’s heartbroken.

The Russell group university that was her firm won’t accept a D in clearing. She has autism & ADHD, had mental health problems in the past few years and did her A levels in a year in the end. I’m concerned about her self-harming again.

Her firm’s offer to her in the end was ABB which is the same as her insurance, Sussex, which is v good for her course. Sussex has confirmed her place but DD has said she’s not going there. She’d really liked it when we visited it and I thought it would be a really good fit for her. (Despite my own reservations re the Kathleen Stock issue, but they seemed really good at support).

She is saying she’s not going to Sussex and DH and I are trying to gently persuade her to accept. But she’s not really talking to us.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 15/08/2024 09:47

DD1 is off to Cardiff and DD2 is off to Bristol. Both exceeded their predicted grades.

QueenMabby · 15/08/2024 09:50

Well done all. DS got AAB so one grade down from PG but enough that Bath rejected. Plan B was Lancaster in clearing which he's got (offer made by phone before 8.15!) but understandably he's devastated particularly as many of his friends dropped grades but still got their firm places.

QueenMabby · 15/08/2024 09:54

Well done everybody.

DS got AAB. Great results but one down from his PG and Bath not at all forgiving so he didn't get his firm. Plan B was Lancaster via clearing. We have a verbal offer so just waiting for the email from them now.

DS devastated which is a shame as his grades are fantastic. Not helped by many of his friends also dropping down from their offers but still getting their firm choice.

QueenMabby · 15/08/2024 09:55

Sorry I posted twice. It los the first time so I re-typed and now both are there!

stoneysongs · 15/08/2024 09:56

@WriterOfWrongs Oh I love Sussex, it's a lovely uni and will be first choice for an awful lot of people. It's especially highly regarded in certain fields, I remember neuroscience and psychology are very strong with superstars on the faculty as DS was looking there. I hope in time she comes to terms with it and realises that she can still be whoever she wants to be - an undergraduate degree from Sussex is perfectly respectable and will certainly not close any doors. Brighton is a very fun town also!

fredder · 15/08/2024 09:58

Ds got into Warwick for Economics so he and we are over the moon. Well done to everyone else. Awful for those whose child didn't get their first choice uni.

Jaxx · 15/08/2024 10:07

It’s far from the end of the world, but there is some disappointment as he met his offer but was below his predicted grades. His EPQ final mark has been moderated down by 4 marks so he has missed the A star there. Only 2 marks off A star for Latin so he will get the scripts back and possibly get 1 or even 2 papers remarked. Maths he did badly in one of the papers, so was 11 marks off overall so may get the script to check there wasn’t a clerical error, but there is no point getting a remark.

He’s happy which is the main thing and I am sure I will be over myself by the time he gets back. I think it is the EPQ I am most upset by and he only just missed getting A star, A star, A - which I would have been very happy with.

Many congrats @rollergirl, @stoneysongs, @aramox1, @MrsAvocet, @PumpkinKnitter, @IThinkIMadeItWorse, @Penguinsa, @socks1107, @WobblyLondoner, @MirandaWest, @Lightsabre and for anyone I have missed.

@WriterOfWrongs so sorry your daughter is so upset. Hopefully with a bit of time she will start to be a bit more positive. Sussex is a great university.

@QueenMabby It is a shame about Bath, but least you avoid the accommodation problems. Lancaster is great - my sister went there and loved it and it was enough for her to go on and do a PhD at St Andrews.

Rollergirl11 · 15/08/2024 10:14

Sorry to hear didn’t get firms @QueenMabby and @WriterOfWrongs.

It is sounding like many didn’t make their PG’s, DD included.

@stoneysongs yes she’s just submitted the form! Just a bit concerned that she will take a 2nd rejection badly. She will know one way or the other by tomorrow. But if she does get an offer it could be from any college. DD is saying she loses nothing by reapplying and she is still very happy with her Exeter place if nothing comes of it.

DS1 grades quite a bit lower than expected but offer for Cardiff Met still confirmed so relieved here.

WriterOfWrongs,* *feeling for you right now and really hope your DD is ok.
With everything she has been through, that's an absolutely bloody amazing achievement x

TenSheds · 15/08/2024 10:21

Congratulations everyone and hugs to @WriterOfWrongs and @QueenMabby and your amazing DC, hope they are able to take a more positive view as the day goes on. DD met her predicted grades and is confirmed for Oxford, she's so relieved, and mainly overjoyed to have got better grades than a friend she's had a friendly rivalry with throughout school! Most people at school seem to have been accepted by their firm choice even if they are disappointed with grades, which is good news.

stoneysongs · 15/08/2024 10:25

Very exciting to have another chance @Rollergirl11, fingers crossed 🤞
Exeter is fantastic, so she can't lose but appreciate it may not feel like that is Cambridge say no.
How do they decide who to take? Do you have any clue how many places or potential applicants?

TenSheds · 15/08/2024 10:26

Oh yes, and good luck @Rollergirl11 to your DD ( interrupted by DH during typing!)

QueenMabby · 15/08/2024 10:31

DS has a verbal offer from his original second choice uni which is good. They said they'd email him with next steps. Is there anything we need to do in clearing or anything? Offer made over the phone at 8.15 but no email yet.

stoneysongs · 15/08/2024 10:36

I don't think so @QueenMabby, just wait for the email and then decline insurance - they will tell you what to do and how to do it. Great that he got a Lancaster place so quickly, a fabulous uni. Well done him for being so organised and proactive.

PuddingtonPuddington · 15/08/2024 10:45

DS off to first choice Lancaster, so happy and relieved for him. Thanks for the feedback @sammyjoanne he just got the feel it was the right place for him when we went to the open day.

@QueenMabby sorry your DS didn’t get Bath place, but sounds like he’ll be joining my DS at Lancaster. Hope you get clearing sorted soon.

WombatChocolate · 15/08/2024 10:48

DS got into Durham. He got 3 x A star, so great excitement here.

Pleased to see lots of good news on here and also to see Clearing is getting people sorted so quickly.

Surprised to see Nottingham with so many courses in Clearing with CCC last night. There are definitely great unis still available for lots of courses.

As parents who feel like we’ve sat these exams and gone through the process, it’s our rollercoaster too isn’t it.

Hoping those who’ve got stuff to do to get it all sorted find it happens quickly and easily and disappointments big or small are quickly over xx

Rollergirl11 · 15/08/2024 10:49

@stoneysongs It just says final grades and performance in original application are used to determine their decision. Don’t know how many places or applications but someone kindly sent me a ROI for last year and 485 were eligible for August pool, 277 opted in and 117 offers were made.
