Noticed the current thread is almost full so thought I better start a new one for discussing results day and our DC’s plans for uni/gap years or anything else!

DD originally said she would rather take a gap year than go through clearing but has now changed her mind and has been researching and prepping for clearing as a contingency plan. She has decided Cardiff and Sussex are the only options she is interested in. Her insurance grades are well within her capacity so hopefully it will be unnecessary but best to be prepared. No plans to celebrate yet - going to wait and see how things go first. She's my youngest and I feel unreasonably nervous!

stoneysongs · 14/08/2024 19:19

Lots of courses available at Manchester, including engineering and computer science.

Pleasealexa · 14/08/2024 19:25

stoneysongs is that showing on UCAS? Mam Uni site isn't showing Engineering. Not sure what the true source is at this stage

MrsAvocet · 14/08/2024 19:49

Urrrgh...feeling super stressed now. I coach at a kids's sports club on Weds as does DS but as he has a party tonight he wasn't there. Probably a good thing! I know people mean well and it's lovely that they care but I had so any questions from parents tonight...when will you know, how do you find out, how's he feeling, where does he want to go, what's plan B....I feel a bit drained!
Only 12 hours to go now though, we're nearly there.

Sorry I should have specified - civil engineering, courses are under C
(Maybe that's not unusual, I don't know anything about engineering except that I thought it was competitive)

Also various management courses, maths, nursing, midwifery, I thought all these would be pretty competitive at UoM.

Lightsabre · 14/08/2024 20:47

Sorry to hear your news Penguinsa. Hope you're not too disheartened and have your new job adventure to look forward to.

Good luck to everyone for tomorrow- a bit nervous here as it could go either way. Ds had a couple of papers he wasn't all that happy with. He needs to be at school tomorrow by 8.30am and wants me to take him but park far away and stay in the car!

He was out today and we were meant to all be out tonight but plans fell through. Settling down to watch Race across the World - celeb edition with some goodies.

SooperOuting · 14/08/2024 20:56

Wishing all you and yours a reasonable nights sleep and all the best for tomorrow x

Rollergirl11 · 14/08/2024 21:16

DD got home around 7pm. She’s absolutely shattered and was asleep fully clothed on top of her bed just now so she’s gone to bed. Hopefully she sleeps all the way through till morning. We are heading in to college for 9am.

Good luck everyone! Hope your DC’s all get what they want/need. 🤞🙏🍀

Good luck everyone! Rooting for all your DCs Flowers

stoneysongs · 14/08/2024 22:13

Sleep well everyone, see you on the other side 🍀

WriterOfWrongs · 14/08/2024 22:19

DD’s school will email the results just after 8am.

we’ll have a good breakfast regardless of results then she’s going to her boyfriend’s in the Midlands for a few nights.

She’s worried about Art (Textiles), that’s the wildcard because it’s quite subjective.

GreatWorldAtlas · 14/08/2024 22:20

Good luck everyone! Dd just said how weird it is to think some teachers at school know the results now... she's all right now but had behaved like a toddler all day until Dh marched her out for a dog walk... always works magic on her!

WriterOfWrongs · 14/08/2024 22:22

@GreatWorldAtlas ooh is that true, that some teachers know now? I just naively assumed they all didn’t find out until tomorrow morning!

GreatWorldAtlas · 14/08/2024 22:36

Yes I think the exams Officer and one other know - though she thinks the subject heads know, so they can support properly. Not sure of details. But under pain of death if they reveal! I didn't mention to her that the Uni have already decided... oh I hope she gets what she needs!

Bathh82 · 14/08/2024 22:42

Good Luck to everyone for tomorrow.

PuddingtonPuddington · 14/08/2024 22:55

Just been looking at York uni clearing and there are some great grade reductions there too, so might also be a good plan B for DS.

Good luck all, not long to go now

Penguinsa · 14/08/2024 22:57

Hope everyone gets what they need tomorrow. DD back from boyfriends and that was fine but can tell they are all getting on edge now. DD said the meet up tomorrow one of them had said no-one is allowed to discuss results. DD was on is that a reasonable request. I said they are presumably nervous. DD well if they insist on this ridiculous request I shall refuse to meet them. Then I will also refuse if I have gone down in my grades. Then told her hospital had called to give me an appointment tomorrow. DD who is it with and exactly what will they be doing? DD has recently became full of medical advice, no idea where she gets it from, but there is so much of it and like 101 ways you can die in operations type advice. She then announces that this appointment will be completely useless. And her DB was slamming the door when she returned home and she said did you tell him its A level results day tomorrow and has he been doing this all day. No and no. 🤔Knowing DD she will likely sleep in until midday. She did tell me her insurance (Bath) had messaged her and she said it was a lovely message. Just a generic one but she said they were nice and trying very hard.

Jaxx · 14/08/2024 22:58

Good luck everyone!

My son is picking up the results in person when the school can release them at 8am. In a series of 5 emails over yesterday and today they have been sent very detailed instructions on what to bring and do under every possible outcome. If I hadn’t seen the SLT member in action before I would have been even more freaked out - but this is just his style. He is a control freak, but one that really cares.

Naem · 14/08/2024 23:01

Well you have to laugh. DD looks up from her phone a few minutes ago and goes "Are the results out tomorrow? I thought it was later ...". She has always lived her life in a bit of a daydream bubble, but this probably takes the cake (and of course I have been stressing since forever, but carefully didn't say anything - she is definitely taking a gap year, her ofters are for a deferred place, so no point looking at clearing anyway, so didn't feel the need to remind her).
She has been working this week helping supervising some littlies at a craft themed day camp (on our road, she and DS both went to it when they were small, so it is kind of nice her now helping out there), so she will do that tomorrow as well (only starts at 10am though).

In any event her school only puts results on a website accessible from 8am for them get their grades, and then at most provide zoom meetings with relevant staff if offers are missed. The school itself is closed, so nowhere to go in. That is if she can access the website. Last year she did an AS level, and it came out the same time as the A levels, and she couldn't get in, and in the end we had to get the exams officer to email her grade as nothing seemed to work to unlock the website for her. She assures me she can access it this year, but she claimed she could last year until she couldn't. So it may well be that we won't be able to access the grades at 8am even though we are supposed to, we shall see. Good thing there we are not looking at clearing.

WriterOfWrongs · 14/08/2024 23:20

@Naem I wrote here the other day about how my DD forgot that the exam results were out today and so on Monday had booked a train ticket for tomorrow morning to go up North to see her boyfriend 🤦‍♀️

Tbf she has been very anxious so was trying not to think about the results… and clearly succeeded 🙄

Her train ticket is a flexible odd-peak at least so if she has a worst case scenario and has to sort something out in clearing, she can stay here for a while tomorrow to sort it.

She’s decided she’d rather get something through clearing for her firm than go to her insurance.

sammyjoanne · 14/08/2024 23:49

Wishing everyone all the very best for tomorrow :)

@Rollergirl11 know the feeling about DD being away. She is on a gap year, and shes spent a few times this past year where she would be 3 weeks with her b/f in Cardiff (we are from Notts) so that time away we do miss her. @Naem My DD2, shes on a gap year currently. Went to Reading uni last year, lasted a week and and wanted to be more local, so shes going to live in a studio in notts with her boyfriend. Will be a 40 mins bus ride to campus (if she lived with us it would be 3 buses). Gap year as the best thing she did. She got a temp job until the christmas, and since april has a job in a gadget shop who will work around her uni time. Also got picked for jury service which she did in june, and travelled to the outer hebrides. Got a lot more confidence as well. So wishing your DD all the best for tomorrow, im sure she will have an amazing year :)

Neveragainisaid · 15/08/2024 06:39

Good luck everyone. Here we go ..... Results for us about 9am. It's been a long night.

fredder · 15/08/2024 07:00

Results for us are 8am at the sixth form. Ds is up and showered already. It is completely within his capabilities to get the grades he needs and he worked his backside off to ensure he did but there is always that doubt that he misread a question. I keep hoping the university will email to say congratulations then we at least know he is in. Dh making me a cup of tea.

Best of luck to everyone on here supporting their child today. I hope they get what they need.

stoneysongs · 15/08/2024 07:08

Oh my goodness less than an hour to go. Will be making sure DD is awake shortly. She's meeting friends at college at 0830 and then I don't expect we'll see much of her until the early hours of tomorrow 🙂

QueenMabby · 15/08/2024 07:09

Morning. DS has decided to get his results at home via the school portal and then go in. Am getting up now so I'm ready either way. Good luck everyone!
